Wait one week and the Phuket Police will be heralded as they arrest the two suspects..it will not be the same guys who commited this tragic crime.. :tsk: but T.I.T. and the MIB will be credited with solving the crime so quickly.. :banghead: OR..the Police bumble along with no leads (Re: cannot be arsed) just same as poor Toby's case till an 'outside' Police force marches in..so they HAVE to do something!

Simply arrest two random Burmese construction workers? Maybe not this time because Bangkok police is already involved. And too much pressure from the media and influential people such as the Phuket governor, the Thai owner of the 5-star resort where the victim was staying, the Australian consul, a national police advisor general and even the Thai prime minister. There is also a 300,000 Baht reward for tips leading to the arrest. A big carrot dangling over the head of a Thai on a 6,000 Baht monthly salary.

Killer of tourist told to surrender. Police warn man who killed Aussie he could be shot.

Phuket police said yesterday they know the identity of a young thief who allegedly killed an Australian woman on Wednesday night - and warned they would shoot him if he tries to resist arrest with the use of a weapon.

Police Maj-General Chanasit Wattanawarangkoon, chief of Phuket police, also urged the killer and his accomplice to surrender to police. He vowed they would get fair treatment in the case. "We now know the identity of the assailants and their whereabouts. They should surrender to police," Chanasit said.

"If the suspects resist arrest, police may have to defend themselves and the suspects may end up being killed in a justifiable homicide," he said.

He said police were questioning witnesses and studying images from security camera recordings of the attack and attackers. With sketches of the suspects, police last night sought court permission for arrest warrants, the provincial police chief said.

Police are hunting for two young men who stabbed and killed Australian travel agent Michelle Elizabeth Smith during an attempted bag-snatch on Wednesday night.

Smith, 60, was stabbed in the chest as she was returning to her hotel after dinner at Phuket's Kata beach.

Earlier yesterday, police also offered a reward of Bt300,000 for the arrest of the two assailants.

Deputy National Police chief Pol General Pansiri Prapawat, who was in Phuket to help inquiries into the case, said yesterday that the reward was offered by the commander of Police Region 8, the Phuket police commander, and the president of the Kata Thani Hotel, Sombat Atiseth, who each would contribute Bt100,000.

"This is an important case that must be solved urgently. We should not let only two people cause damage to Phuket's tourism. I promise that police will arrest those two perpetrators as soon as possible," Pansiri said.

Smith was walking back to her hotel with a friend after dinner, at about 10.30pm, when the attack occurred.

Two men, aged about 20 to 25, rode past the women twice before one of them tried to snatch Smith's bag, police said. Tammee Lynn, who suffered a slash wound to her right arm during the attack, told police Smith struggled to hold on to the bag - which prompted one of them to stab her in the chest. The knife struck her heart and she died shortly after at the scene.

The two men fled empty-handed.

The authorities have intensified efforts to find the killers. Deputy Premier Chalerm Yoobamrung said the case was important for Thailand's image as a tourist-friendly destination. Tourism Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa said the incident had damaged the country's image overseas.

Yesterday, Pansiri chaired a meeting of senior Phuket officers at the local police headquarters, during which he stressed the importance of restoring tourist confidence following the incident. He said police would get tough with local influential figures who abused foreign tourists and caused much damage to the country's tourism reputation.

Which begs the question, "Why don't the police have them in custody by now?"

Well, of course we all know this is the reason they want to solve the case. For them to be quite so blatant about it is quite astounding.

JF1 - Apologies, yes of course a serious subject and zero offense intended to anyone. Out of order.

I for one hope each and every one of the buggers guilty of these crimes whether against Thai nationals or foreigners gets exactly what they deserve.

Actually, I had 2 Thai visitors who recently stayed with me for a few days in the UK. They were actually here to study English in a break from the Bkk Uni they both attend.

They were a walking disaster waiting to happen. On the London underground, I warned them of pickpockets and the like, often Rumanian gangs, and about keeping their bags close to them. But when walking around with a Prada bag in a bag so to speak, a gucci one over your shoulder and so on, you are a bit of a magnet. Anyway, they did as told and kept their bags close and as a consequence one of them had their iphone nicked from a coat pocket! :|

As for the comments from the Thai authorities about the damage caused by this murder to the tourist industry, to my recollection, this is always wheeled out after such incidents as the reason to quickly catch the perps and help with damage-limitation.

It always comes across as insensitive, uncaring and raises questions about their motives in even bothering to investigate the crime in the 1st place!

Phuket Police release sketch of Michelle Smith murder suspect
Phuket Gazette – Monday, June 25, 2012 10:08:12 AM

PHUKET: As the manhunt continues in Phuket for the killers of Australian tourist Michelle Smith, police have released a composite sketch of the prime suspect in the hope that some member of the public can identify him.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Chonasit Wattanavrangkul said that both men involved in the attack were probably both in their late 20s and relatively tall for Thais, about 175cm to 180cm tall.

This information differs slightly from original estimates, which said the killers were in their early 20s and slightly shorter.

The composite sketch is of the man caught on CCTV stabbing the late Mrs Smith last Tuesday night. Details collected about his accomplice were as yet insufficient to apply for a second warrant, Maj Gen Chonasit said.

Included with the sketch was an image of the purple Honda Dream motorbike they used to carry out the attack, just 100 meters from the Katathani resort, where Mrs Smith was staying with a group of other travel agents on a "familiarization tour" of the island.

Initial reports specified the color of the motorbike as blue. Police said earlier that there were about 30 motorbikes matching the general description in the Land Transport Department database.

Phuket Provincial Court has issued an arrest warrant for the anonymous suspect on multiple charges including premeditated murder, attempted armed robbery and weapons charges.

Although Phuket Police sometimes restrict access to the media of composite sketches, the opposite is true in this case. Maj Gen Chonasit has ordered patrol and traffic police units and civil defence volunteers to distribute the images as widely as possible in communities across the island in the hope the public will help identify him.

Anyone who can will be eligible to collect a 300,000-baht reward offered jointly by police and the Katathani resort.

Phuket Police have also arranged for local cable television operators to broadcast the image every 30 minutes.

It was not mentioned if KPP Cable TV, whose owner Atsadakorn “Pod” Seedokbuab has been charged with attempted murder in the contract killing of Phuket newsman Wisut “Ae Inside” Tangwitthayaporn, was among the cable companies taking part.

Maj Gen Chonasit urged anyone with information about either man to call him directly at 081-8419559 or call the police emergency hotline number: 191.
