The only thing I would say about trading of any kind - other than the timezone issues - are that brownouts can leave you with awful positions sometimes. Plan redundancy into everything you do. Sooner or late you *will* be caught out by infrastructure failure in Thailand.

Power - Cuts are rarely longer than two hours in my experience, and UPS' start from 3,000 odd Baht. Plus a lot are electric board shutdowns for works which are mostly done in daytime, so before your 9pm start.

Network - You'll have the Broadband landline connection, if you then have a smart phone/tab or whatever with say a TrueMove 3G plan, you will be able to hardwire 'tether' or WiFi to the phone's 'hotspot' in the event the power or network goes down. Connecting to a phone's 3G 'hotspot' provides very good speeds imo, a monthly plan with 3GB of 3G is around 700 Baht/m, but this includes around 700 Baht's worth of calls, sms & mms. 5GB of 3G is 900 odd Baht/m.

I just got this result connecting to a New York server, laptop to Android phone's WiFi hotspot, on TrueMove. Ooh, look at her... "Grade C - Slower than 57% of Thais". I'll settle for that, better than I did at school

No it's not really regular. It is often dependant on when the rain comes; but not always.

I have looked through the responses on the original post and the various strands that have developed. I cannot believe that anything less than the ownership of property and a steady income are a pre-requisite. I have property in Thailand and will ensure that I have free capital of 75m baht before I think of living long term in Hua Hin. I am over 60 so am thinking that I will need health care and other assistance long term. I will also keep assets outside Thailand.
What intrigues me is any way I can invest in a business (not a bar, building company, estate agent etc) but something that uses my accountancy skills - most likely in an advisory capacity. Even though I will get a retirement visa the need for a work permit visa is something I think I will want - I am not sure that day trading on the internet is what I want to do - stuck in front of a computer as any time away without securing positions is a recipe for disaster.
I will want to play plenty of golf!
Any views on what is possible. :P

han108,
I'll just address one point and that is that you won't be able to get a Work Permit if you have annual retirement extensions. Retired means exactly that.

If you've got 75 million Baht Han, get spending and enjoy life, and forget all the other stuff. Money has a habit of out living people who wait too long. Pete

3 million baht goes a long way in thailand as long as you are careful and dont go crazy. If you had an income from say rental property back in the uk, about £500 p/m=25,000 baht you could easily do it. Live is too short and before you know it youre dead, so why wait, go and enjoy the rest of your life.
I am doing the same later this year, im 52, self employed builder, worked hard all my life and now finding the aches and pains getting worse and i think the uk stinks now, very depressing being here. I go to thailand every xmas and new year for about 2 months and i always feel great, young and fit when im there, come back uk and feel old, depressed and suffocated. Go for it mate, all the best, chokdee
