My buddies are back down here from Chiang Mai, so we had to go to H.S. N., where it's never been half as crowded as downtown Hua Hin beach. Lovely, cheap food. Hardly an Olaf or an Ole or an Ingeborg to be seen.

My friends had hassles at downtown Hua Hin over New Year's - obstinate chair renters, touts that never quit hawking their wares, etc. Not so down at *** /// --- beach, wherever that is.

I'm sunburnt. The water was great. It slopes down much faster than at Kao Takiab.

We found that to be a bit of a problem with our small children, especially when the waves are up a little.

For families with small kids I still say you can't beat a quiet spot somewhere along the middle of the main Hua Hin beach - like at the end of Soi 75 (if it's still there after the November floods). And Suan Son, the other side of Khao Takiab headland, is as good as any beach in the area IMO, absolutely massive and with the same kid-friendly gentle slope into the sea as the main HH beach but much, much cleaner. When I have been there it has been deserted except for us and has had a real 'desert island' feel to it. First time there I remember looking at the scale of the empty sands and thinking 'now THAT is a beach!' You need to take a picnic though (remembering to take your rubbish home with you of course) as there are no food or drink outlets - in fact nothing other than pine-fringed sand and sea for diversion or entertainment - probably why it's quiet! Let's hope the army owners don't sell it for development.

To answer Oe,

I know that Sharks normally are a long way out but when the smell my blood they descend on me in multitudes.

I have the same problem with human beings.

I seem though to have a close affinity with cats and snakes, who happen to be the two speices that could actually give me a problem.

Maybe I got something right somewhere.

Anyway just in case anybody has read the topic in Dear Wanderust, I have now re-extablished ameniable relationships with my favorite pussy. Now she loves me again without me having to supply a bag full of Pla Too.

The problem now is that she wants to play pool with me but does not understand that she heeds a cue. She just leaps on the table in the middle of a game and kicks the balls all over the table.

Life is just an ongoing list of problems that I can never catch up with. Then just as I see the light at the end of the tinnel a German express train comes at me at 350 KMPH with 30,000 copies of the International Pool Rules posted on the front.

I'm not sure exactly where Sua Son beach is, but if you turn in to the army base at the PTT station on the left (heading south on Petsakasem en route to Pranburi, just a few km south of the flyover), and turn left over the railroad tracks, you get the same beach that you can walk to from Anantasila/Blue Wave, with chairs and inner tubes for rent, and a decent food pavillion, and it looks like there are modern cottages for rent. Never very full, and lined with those pine trees that the army boys keep pruned.

Hello! Just a quick question - i intend to hire a car out in HH when I visit in late June. As you say the waters are not crystal clear, are there beaches in the area that are within driving distance? I'd really like to go to a beach where the waters are crystal, and the sands golden!

Any recommendations welcome!

Thanks,

Michael

Hey, thanks for the reply! I have in fact checked all the links on the site! I've even searched the forum!

When beaches are called "good beaches", is that for their crystal clear water and golden sands? None of the links really mention such things, but maybe i'm just too much of a rookie.

I was also wondering, on the beaches page - the instructions to get there are some what limited. Is it simple to drive out there for the first time? Or should I be doing something else (buying maps in the area?)

Thanks!

I think you maybe on the wrong coastline, try the Andaman side for crystal water and white sand.

The further south you go the clearer the water gets but it never compares to the other side.

the time we were there ( did not know it at the time) a tanker was leaking oil, and we got enough of it on us to make the swim a major cleaning incident ( back at the hotel)
