The beach here at Dolphin Bay is full of Thais every weekend with no ill effects, can't say I have heard of any problems.

Swimming at Hua Hin beach
Basically don't Den, unless you like swimming in 'lord-knows-what' and, incidentally, the locals won't mostly either.

The further south you go, the better the beaches get generally til you hit Surat Thani. Although, Chumpon is a bit questionable too these days.

Have swam hundreds of times and had no problems, although I mostly swam at Takiab beach. Not only because it was only 50 meters away from the place we were renting, but also because I don't really like the main beach in Hua-Hin since it's starting to resemble a squatter camp. Unfortunately, I see Takiap beach is now starting to go the same way, loosing its charm rapidly.

The beach down soi 19 is not too bad if you don't mind taking a bit of a walk. Basically any stretch of beach is nice if it's not too readily accessible to large groups wanting to have picnics. Sorry I can't elaborate further.

Whether the water is polluted or not is anyone's guess. I like to think it isn't, but.............

All in all, I still enjoy a swim in the sea far more than I enjoy swimming in a pool.

I could be mistaken but I think all the waste from all the businesses and homes in downtown Hua Hin is pumped (or runs) directly into the sea directly from the sewers. Years ago I was walking on the beach somewhere north of the Hilton around the area of the seafood restaurants and I caught a whiff of a stink so powerful it almost made me gag. I looked around and saw a pipe about a meter in diameter dumping waste directly into the sea.

As I said, this was years ago so maybe they don't do that any more, but I haven't seen any waste treatment plant built in the area so I suspect it still goes on. I wouldn't even wade in it anywhere near town and I wouldn't swim in it without a dry suit and divers full coverage hard hat or anything short of a HazMat suit.

I have raised the question before whether there is a waste treatment plant in Hua Hin and the response was no. So, before you go swimming, ask yourself: Where does the sewage from all the houses, the big hotels, the restaurants end up? Right. In the sea. The further south of HH you go, the better the water. Don't go swimming in a pile of sh*t.

I was assured there is a waste treatment place on Naedkehardt

I wouldn't swim anywhere north of Army Beach, but...

there does seem to be a waste water treatment plant. Well, at least there's a building with a name like that. It's on lower Naebkehardt. Shocked the heck out of me when I saw it a few weeks ago. I'd gone up and down Naebkehardt for years and never seen it. Just an unassuming building with some name like "Hua Hin Waste Water Treatment Facility". You could pass it a thousand times and never notice. For all I know, it doesn't actually do anything.

That said, if you go to the beach nearest my house and look north, you'll see a one meter drain pipe dumping directly into the sea. That pipe seems to be the border line to royal ground and you can't go north of there. It's palace land.

Thai neighbors around here go surf fishing pretty often with no obvious ill effects, no extra arms and legs, but I stay out of the water.

Richard - I was writing this when your response showed up.

This will be another never ending thread based on assumptions.
Please get obvious proof, visit the local authorities and get their delivered facts, if necessary get some lingohelp doing it. Then evaluate and consider. Water quality is not a local phenomena anymore - tourism is depending on it.

Correct Steve, and it was the same back in South Africa.

BTW, down in Cornwall you still get a movement called "Surfers Against Sewerage"
