True Visions HD

Post by PeteC »

Yesterday True showed up and changed out all of our existing control boxes to HD. We didn't request this but were told within the next 2 months the entire country will have boxes changed to HD, and after a certain period the old boxes will no longer work. There appears to be no choice with this. There is no charge, and apparently you'll get all the HD channels free for a four month trial. After that, they'll just be locked if you don't want to subscribe. Has this change over started in Hua Hin yet?

I'm still working through things as you get a new remote as well, and so far I feel the system is not too user friendly. The way to access "favourites" is terrible IMO and you only get to designate 20 channels. Even though there are genres for different categories, the system is not yet working where you can segregate things like sports, movies etc., and get to them quickly. Be prepared to memorize a lot of channel numbers if you like to jump around browsing different shows.

As you get this installed down there, please post any user friendly tips and shortcuts when you find them. The user manual is in Thai and English but it gives very little detail, especially concerning the functions which do not work or if they will ever work. Pete

Pete. I've had it for a few months now. Just wait until you get the black box in the middle of the screen with "copyright protection failed"...It happens every time I switch on!
Good luck.

Pete, do you rent or own your equipment? I can see them switching it out for free if you rent, but I own, and it's a PVR, not just a decoder box. I never watch anything in real time. I record everything I want to watch and watch what I want when I want. I hope they don't take that possibility away.

Hi there Pete

We got our Box changed just last Week and we have Three HD Channels free for four month. And if we wanna keep those channels just pay 290Baht on Top of your Package that you had subscribed. I'm wondering when they gotta change the reciever Box into of my aunts Condo just south of Cha Am. I take a wild guess and say during the next two months they show un in bulk
I haven't had time tweaking and playing with the new Samsung HD receiver just yet. I will let you know if there's some shortcuts around!!!

Thanks US. HHF, we rent all of our stuff. The new Samsung HD boxes have a recording capability as well, but it's not operational yet. No word from them when it will be. What you have is not the box system we had. I guess those who own the old box type we had will then have to rent or buy the new system. I would imagine there is some credit in place if they force owners to do that. Pete

New work-around discovered when problems arise. We've had many problems since I opened this thread, mainly associated with what they call "Dynamic Updates" which will appear from time to time on your screen and are meant I guess to feed new programming in a computer sense to your control box. The few times this has been done, the system did not work properly afterwards. As an example, all sets were stuck on Thai TV channel 3 and could not be changed except to channel 5  .

After many phone calls, the solution is to unplug your set and control box, remove the white cable coming from your dish either from the wall or from the control box, wait a minute, then reconnect. This resets the system and it has worked each time for us so far. Possible this was a fix with the old style boxes as well, but I don't know has we never had a problem with them. Pete

Don't feel bad Pete, that seems to be the answer here in Southern California too

We had ours upgraded here in Bangkok last week. We rent the box

In Cha Am we own the box, but have not thought about that problem yet. Interesting to see how other box owners get on.

Doubt very much that there will be any kind of Credit from True

Never mind!

Is there a worse Company in the ENTIRE WORLD??? I DON'T THINK SO !!

Excuse the screaming, but I wish I was that guy who shouted out of his window in the movie one time.....only I think I might just jump out of mine tonight.

Was sitting around tonight, anxiously waiting for the Master's Golf Tournament and thought......oh, hey, I better check my PVR and make sure it's got a clean disk in it.

As it's done a few times lately, I couldn't get the thing to open so I could insert a new disc.....try as I might I just finally gave up. Mind you, I paid about 10,000 baht or something like that a couple of years ago for this thing.....that was after investing 29,000 baht in a top of the line Phillips (who at the time were the only ones offering them here).....O.K., lesson learned, put this one on top of the old one and headed out to INDEX......

Got to Index (hate to mention I'm travelling against Doc's orders after last month's back operation......but hey, anything for golf, right?) and guess what?? April 1 they opened their NEW Pure Products store in good old downtown Hua Hin.....Okey Dokey, drove there, passed their new underground parking which I didn't know about but managed to snag a parking spot at the gas station next door. Hobbled over to Pure and saw they had very little mdse out but crossed my fingers. Oh, yea, I was in luck. They just happened to have a brand spanking new $500 Digital HD model sitting right on the counter.

Paid for the thing and hobbled back to the car and drove the 1/2 hour home.....drug all of the old stuff (the old one was DVD only) off the TV credenza, unplugged it all and busily started figuring out how to work this thing. Well, wouldn't you know it......BEFORE the FREE HD upgrade we had decided to try out UBC's HD product and had paid 4,000 for two brand spanking new HD boxes....of course we got the old " you only have three channels now, but you can get more in four months after our free offer" line of crap.....oh, let's not go in to that.

Here's a word of warning for y'all and the actual subject of tonight's tirade. My BRAND SPANKING NEW STATE OF THE ART SONY HD PVR DOESN'T WORK WITH UBC'S F>>>>>ING BRAND NEW HD SET TOP BOX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If fact, since we are not in Bangkok we are pretty much totally screwed if we don't have a PVR they offer, which by the way, WE CAN'T GET BECAUSE WE DON'T LIVE IN BANGKOK.....................oh....but maybe, just maybe we could truck our little selves clear up to Paragon F":::::ing Plaza and find a hard drive that will work with UB F..;....inc C, then we could call good old UBC Techical Support and sign up for their for sure not free PVR Service.

O.K., rant over.............except for one little thing........my brand new HD set top box decided it didn't want to work any more when I put it back together with the TV.....and Honestly, I had not either thrown it anywhere or mishandled it in any way. So......I called back technical support and was lucky enough to get the guy I had just spent 45 minutes with on the phone learning all this stuff.......his recommendation: Leave it on for half an hour and I'll send a special command to turn it back on.....................................still waiting........................

If anyone has a better story than this, please share, I could use a good laugh.

Hey......update...........waited the 1/2 hour I was told to wait, probably more by the time I finished my last masterpiece and called Customer Service back......My guy who I had already talked with twice must be the only one one duty tonight....or I'm one lucky guy to get the same tech three times in a row.

His advice: Just leave it on, sooner or later it should start working.

Give me a break!!!! Thank God I've got another working one in the bedroom, and yes I just checked and it is working.

We had Dish TV in California and I would happily pay them anything they want just to get them back. If I'd known how good I had it I might have just stayed there!!

T.I.G.R., weren't you one of the Americans who used to give me a hard time about complaining about living in this hell hole? :D :D :D

We have the old TrueVisions PVR and it works sometimes but hangs up a lot or just refuses to record so I record everything I want to see 3 or 4 times when they come on more than once hoping one recording will be good. They called us and told us that they are switching out all old receivers free of charge for the new HD ones which will be the only ones that will work soon. So they are coming out next week to deliver this new HD receiver. I don't really care about the HD channels so I won't buy them and will be happy to watch the old ones with my old eyes (they are fine). Along with the free swap to the HD receiver they are charging us 4k baht+ for a hard drive if we want the PVR capability to work in the new box.

I'll probably do it as I never watch live (scheduled) TV, but always watch it recorded on my PVR whenever I want to. Can I ask why you opted for a Sony PVR instead of using the PVR function included in your new HD receiver box and just buying the hard disk from TrueVisions that enables the function. Supposedly you can record two channels simultaneously while watching another with this new box and hard drive; which is better functionality that the old TrueVisions PVR... or your Sony, and you can get it in Hua Hin, you don't have to live in Bangkok according to the people we talked to.

I watched the first round of the Masters in it's entirety this morning recorded live on my PVR; you didn't miss much if you like American players; most of them sucked. :banghead:

What stress you guys put yourselves through?

Fortunately for me, I'm a quick learner................I simply don't both with anything along these lines because I know it will just be a headache. Problem solved - zero stress. If I can't even rely on water being delivered to my taps, I certainly won't even entertain the idea of expecting technology to be delivered to my living room.

The more you expect, the more you're going to be disappointed.

Wow, you guys are kind of onery today.....no, HH, I have never given you a hard time about anything.....normally I'm too busy bitching myself.

Nice deal you got on the hard drive....I was on the phone with them last night for an hour and no-one offered me a thing....in fact the guy I was talking to told me I should go to Paragon Plaza and try to find a hard drive.....get out of here!!

I took the Sony back to Pure Electric this afternoon, and of course the guy didn't want it back.....I don't blame him, what could you do with it? We settled on a store credit that will last me a year.........I already gave it to the Boss and she's going to buy stuff for the Temple.

Maybe it's because we're in Cha Am......it sure ain't Kansas!

I can get my American football games now on my Samsung Tablet so that took care of my biggest problem because those games aren't re-broadcast like the golf. I'm O.K. with watching the Master's at 9:30 a.m. Screw UBC, their PVR program probably won't work worth a damn and like everything else they've tried to do it will be a complete flop......why bother as Takiap so nicely puts it.

I've got three of the old receivers that work fine and you only can get one movie channel on the HD.....worthless.....so I asked the guy last night how about if I put my card in my old receivers and I'll be happy.......nope, he says, the card won't work on those any more...........If any of you guys want the old receivers for anything you can have them.....

I thought a lot of the Americans did fine....it's only Thursday you know. Don't look for Westwood to finish where he started....so who are you rooting for anyway? We've been Tiger fans since he was 14 and we could watch him in Calif. in the Amateur Championships.....and it was a way to get the wife interested in golf because he's half Thai.

Truevision set top box owners

Post by mo1 »

Does anyone knows whether the old set top box (mine is IR-H100S)
will still function normally after the 17th of July? I have tried to purchase
the new HD set top box but no one is selling them, they can only be rented
through TrueVision or so the story goes.......
