You have to go to Ta Yang/Cha Am or Pranburi to get your Thai license.
Can't do it in Hua Hin.

I seem to remember an office in Tha Yang but certainly Petchaburi.

Pran Buri is no good. Different Province, unless Norseman knows otherwise.

I seem to remember my partner getting hers from an office a good few km north of Cha Am down a lane on the right of the main road to Petchaburi, somewhere near the Outlet Mall.

If you're keeping a Anglo/American drivers license, you may use either the Pranburi office or the Ta Yang/Cha Am office.
Drivers from non-english speaking countries must have their licenses translated to Thai, (you can do that in Hua Hin), then proceed to one of the above offices and get a Thai license.

You'll find the Ta Yang/Cha Am office as informed by Steve G, about midway between Cha Am and Ta Yang.
I guess it's a four five kms north of Cha Am.
Personally I find the Cha Am office more helpful than Pranburi, but you can get your license in both places.
Be prepared for two easy tests, (they test your breaking reactions and your depth of view).

Bring a couple of portrait photos, passport, your blue or yellow book (your address) and that's it.
Can't remember the cost but it's next to nothing.
If you already have a motor cycle drivers license from your homeland you should bring two more portrait photos and change that as well.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

The Ta Yang office is on the right side of Phetkasem road when you come from HH, between km 198 and 199. Take the next U-turn after the one opposite the Land office, then take the first small road on your left. Follow the road for a few hundred meters and you will find the office on your left, just after the fork.

Thank-you for those very precise directions because I’ve been to this office three times now and I’ve never found it without doing about three U-turns!

I made only one U-turn the first time I went there... but something like 15 km too far, so I had to stop about 10 times along the road to ask the way! :P

I also took pictures of the sign (in Thai) and of the building, PM me if you are interested.

Is this office at the same location as when this was posted? I need to get my license renewed and I now live in Hua Hin.

It was certainly still there when I renewed my car tax at the begining of the year, and I think someone would have posted on here if it had closed or moved.
Follow the precise instructions above if you've never been before as it's not all that easy to find.

where to get thai drivers license in cha am?

Post by garhook »

Was in Pranburi today to get my Thai driving license but was refused due to only having a copy of my full working permit and the government stamp in my passport was not enough confirmation that I had a work permit.
Then drove to the license centre just north of Cha am with the same information and was in and out with my new license in 40 mins.
Suggest people try the Cha am centre first. The staff were all smiles and spoke very good english

Is it also possible to do the practical driving test in Cha-am, and "rent" a car there to do so?

TIA

I agree completely, did my motorbike licence there too borrowed a bike from the ladies outside the main gate no problem. Ask the staff they really are very helpful.
