Kicking addiction
Kicking addiction
Gave up smoking 9 months ago and now off warfarin after 5 years and although I'm feeling better and being told I look better I still occasionally feel like sh1t. I know withdrawal symptoms from not smoking after 40 odd years take some time but do any of you know what withdrawal symptoms are to be expected from coming off warfarin?
Asked my doctor but he just said it takes time.
Would go across the road to BK hospital for a second opinion but don't want to run up a large doctor bill for a 10 minute conversation

Congrats on that....my goal is to do likewise... Ironically I'm moving to a place where they cost a fraction of US prices...and that will be the ultimate challenge...
Just curious...was it cold turkey or gradual using techniques...?

Mags Mum came off warfarin a couple of years ago, at 85. Stopped taking her diuretic tabs as well. She didn't tell the doc - just went on a special diet which is designed to shed excess water naturally from the body. She had been in hospital for a hip jobby and of course they stop the warfarin for that, so she figured if that didn't kill her she didn't need the stuff anymore.....
I can't remember what the diet was called but a lot of natural grains and rice crackers and greens. It did her head in - she gave up on the diet after a month!
But strangely she has never once mentioned any kind of side effect or withdrawal symptoms since. I didn't even realise there might BE withdrawal symptoms, and I daren't ask her now or she'll invent some.

COLD TURKEY
Only way IMO
Done it twice and you need a shock to make it work
1st time
Pain in the chest playing competitive club squash
2nd time
Realised I was bored, drinking too much and smoking too much here in Hua Hin and my local doctor gave me a shock when suggesting I need surgery to clear blocked veins
5 or 6 years ago I had a stroke which necessitated Warfarin to thin my blood hence my original post about withdrawal symptoms
Made it work by telling everybody and therefore gaining support, following websites regarding effects of withdrawal and initially I tried a detox program which had startling results
Do it man. It's easy

PM me if you want more details

I would have thought the major concern with coming of something that has been thinning your blood would be clotting and risk of stroke!
I would take medical advice before even thinking about it Richard!
Do you take regular low dose Aspirin?

Off Warfarin on Doctors recommendations after giving up smoking and blood tests that prove I'm stabilised.NOKYAI wrote:I would have thought the major concern with coming of something that has been thinning your blood would be clotting and risk of stroke!

Aspirin and warfarin are a dangerous cocktail as they cancel each other out.
My intention now is to avoid all medication other than recommended herbals

^^ Aspirin and Warfarin cancel each other out? Really? Surely both are blood thinning, so I would have thought very dangerous in taking together, but for other reasons....
As for quitting smoking, fair play to you sir - I've seen many try and fail. I for one was given a method that worked for me - had been smoking for 15-20 years, but gave up overnight without huge problems....... although did miss the odd ciggie!!
The method?? Get absolutely sh*t faced, mixing drinks.... chain smoke throughout the night. Result - will not touch the booze or a ciggy for several days.... make it 7, then it's just mental craving and can be handled.
As I say, could be complete BS but it worked for me. Never had a cigarette since the day I quit.
Managed a few beers since though!!
