What size could this seriously grow to in the ponds you have Terry - sufficient food, pool size etc.?Terry wrote:Yes these are very interesting creatures and I have seen the program several times on TV
This ray is from the Dasyatidae family of the Latin name Himantura chaophraya and is otherwise known as the Giant Freshwater Stingray or as the Thais call them - Pla Kabeng Nam Djut
We bought two from a breeder near Ratchaburi two years ago - they were then about 30cm across.
One died within the month and we found it's remains having mostly been devoured by Pacu.
Last January I spotted the remaining one cruise past me in the bottom pond. It was about 45 -50cm across (I think! - as I only saw part of the 'wing').
Needless to say - nobody has ever caught it

Thai ladies - God bless them
Sure - they might want to eat it, but just ask them to actually KILL it first - any fish for that matter........
As for how big they might grow in my place - my guess is nowhere near that size - maybe a metre across if we are lucky, who knows?
Anyway - our specimen (who I assume is still there) is yet to be caught - if such an event does happen, I will of course give a report.
Meanwhile it is happily swimming around in our bottom pond

There's another show with a different host/explorer doing the same thing in the Mekong River. From what I saw he didn't catch any as big as Pharvey's though. Pete

Hi Pete
Yes there are many such fishing programs that have dealt with fishing in Thailand - amongst other locations
'Monster Fish', 'Fish Warrior', 'Hooked', 'River Monsters', 'Extreme Fishing' to name but a few

Hi Terry
Is anything being put on/planned at the Fishing Lodge for New Year's Eve this year?

Ah well, that's a pity - we were hoping to catch it this year. I guess you're closed over Christmas, but when are you up and running? Would certainly like a restful few hours with a rod and a few beers and my father and wife pi**ing themselves at me trying to fish!!Terry wrote:Not this year

Re: Hua Hin Fishing Lodge
It's always good to get positive feedback from customers - got this one a couple of days ago.
"...........Hi Terry, just wanted to tell you we had a fantastic day at your place. Your staff were excellent and I not only enjoyed the fishing, but relaxing in lovely tranquil suurroundings. As I expected my friend Tony booked as well. When one of the guides advised that a fish hooked was likely to be a large Arrapaima I asked Tony to take it. I knew his desire for a large one and to claim bragging rights with another friend. I swear it had nothing to do with my aching arms from just landing a large Julian Carp. The fish was estimated at aroung 35k, but it was not the biggest hooked that day. That turned out to be at 80k. Just as your advertising suggests it was I that was hooked. I miss my fly fishing in the UK, but I've now found a place as a substitute. We plan to be back on the 17th and my stepson will come too. When I showed him the photos his eyes lit up. Once again thanks to everyone there, especially the excellent guides, congratulations on developing a fantastic place and Chock Dee........"
Can't wait to get back

Re: Hua Hin Fishing Lodge
Sadly we cannot
This does however highlight the frail situation with regard to fish in general. Supply and demand is raising the prices ever skyward. It's very sad
However - I have to admit that a nice slice of sashimi tuna, lashed with wasabi and soy sauce does make my mouth water
So - even if I could breed them - they would not last long at my place.

Re: Hua Hin Fishing Lodge
NEWS UPDATE
1) We shall be CLOSED all day on Thursday January 26 for a private function.
2) We recently released 3 baby Cobra Snakehead into the bottom pond. These are the same fellas that have caused havoc to the N. American waterways - due to careless releasing. Our fellas have been neutered - so that they wont breed. Check out http://www.huahinfishing.com/fishing-news
3) We also recently released 700kg of new stock - mainly Pla Suwai into the top pond - approx 130 fish between 3 and 6 kg.
4) 20 Pla Suwai to 15Kg were also released into the bottom pond. Photos to follow when I get them

Hello Rich
Yes - lures do work here, but you will have to have patience in determining which type to use - they go in and out of fashion with the fish
Species caught on lures so far - to my certain knowledge - there may be others
Amazon Redtail Catfish, Alligator Gar, Pacu, Suwai, Barramundi, and Jungle Perch

Re: Hua Hin Fishing Lodge
With apologies to the ladies but, people often send me fishing jokes - this one tops them all......
A young Aussie lad moved to London and went to Harrods looking for a job.
The manager asked 'Do you have any sales experience?'
The young man answered 'Yeah, I was a salesman back home in Dubbo.'
The manager liked the Aussie so he gave him the job.
His first day was challenging and busy, but he got through it.
After the store was locked up, the manager came down and asked, 'OK, so how many sales did you make today?'
The Aussie said 'One!'
The manager groaned and continued, 'Just one? Our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day.
How much was the sale for?'
'£124,237.64p.'
The manager choked and exclaimed £124,237.64!! What the hell did you sell him?'
'Well, first I sold him a small fish hook, then a medium fish hook and then I sold him a new fishing rod.'
'Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down at the coast, so I told him he would need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him that twin-engine Power Cat.'
'Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to car sales and I sold him the 4 x4
The manager, incredulous, said, 'You mean to tell me...a guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and a 4x4?'
'No, no, no... he came in here to buy a box of tampons for his lady friend and I said...
'Well, since your weekend's buggered, you might as well go fishing.'
