Train fares

Post by sean88 »

Ill be in hua hin early February and will visit Koh Phayam which is a ferry from Ranong. I can never sleep on the bus so I might take the train which departs Hua Hin at 11:36 pm and arrives Chumphon at 4:23 am . Times arent great but I love the trains in Thailand. Does anyone know the cost for a first class or second class sleeper. I cant seem to figure it out from the train website? Im wondering if I have to pay the full price from Bangkok to Hat Yai ?

Thanks,
Sean

I've taken the train from HH to Chumphon a couple of times before but some years ago. If you've got the timetable, isn't there one that leaves around 5pm ish arriving at Chumphon around 9pm? That's the one I got. Stay overnight in Chumphon - I can recommend one decent hotel that won't break the bank - and then bus or minibus to Ranong the next morning.
It's obviously up to you, but I can't see the point of getting a sleeper for a journey of some 4 hours.
The earlier train I was on cost a few hundred baht.
If you do get a sleeper, I don't think you'll have to pay the full BKK - HY fare but it may be difficult to book. You can make reservations on most overnight trains 90 days in advance though.

Thanks lomuamart

I think your right I will take an earlier train and stay in Chumphon or even get to Ranong. What was the hotel in Chumphon that you suggested? Does it have a pub in it ? Are there any decent pub crawls there ?

Thanks for the help here fella's ! Great website. I loved Hua Hin and can't wait to get back !

Cheers,
Sean

The hotel is "The Chumphon Palace". It's central, clean, friendly and about 3 star with aircon, western en suite bathroom for about 400 THB a night. Just ask for it at the station and a motorcycle taxi will take you there for 20THB ish - it's been a few years since I was down there. The minibuses depart from near the hotel. Again it'll be about a 20THB fare fare by motorcycle taxi.
The only "pub" I know is "The Farang Bar". Again central, friendly, good food with a good few travelers who've been/are going to the islands. All the motorcycle taxis should know the name.
There are other places to party but I got a bit tipsy on the train down there the first time, had a beer outside the train station and was persuaded to go along with a load of young Thais to some disco - I seem to remember it had two floors. Anyway, a good night and I didn't need a hotel as I fell out the disco at about the same time as minibuses were going to Ranong.
Ah, border runs. Some of them were good fun back in those days!!
