Re: Mr Sing back open
Recommend this place as well if in Takiab, cheap and cheerful at good prices.
He's my goto place.

Re: Mr Sing back open
Tried it for the first time today for lunch. BaaBaa clued me in on the place a while back but it was closed for a few months. Very good Thai food (they have western food too) at very cheap prices. We had spicy shrimp soup (tom yum goong), chicken with basil (pad krapow), and papaya salad (som tam Thai) all for only 180 baht and it was plenty of food for two. I don't think the missus could go to the market, buy the ingredients and cook it herself for that price. The food is very clean for us westerners and the cook (Mr Sing's missus?) used to be a chef in one of the beach hotels here. Both they and the Swede who owns the mini golf at the end of the same soi are very nice and all speak good English.
Also, they have paper take home copies of their menu and will deliver if you live in the area.
I checked out the mini golf at the end of the road and it is an 18 hole artificial turf golf course with some interesting layouts or challenges on some of the holes. It is lighted for night play and has a little snack/drinks bar. This soi would be a nice inexpensive family evening out with a game of mini golf followed by a meal at Mr. Sings.
Both currently open at noon and run until around 8 p.m. Don't be shy if either looks empty when you go. Just walk into the garden and someone should come out to greet you.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Mr Sing back open
Glad you enjoyed. Hidden gem for our area.

Re: Mr Sing back open
And yes, his missus cooks, although my missus and her mother said it was a bit spicy when he once got left to his own devices. And they like it hot.

Re: Mr Sing back open
Is it actually in Soi 116 or just near Soi 116? If in 116, is it own left or right side?magnum wrote:If you live in the Soi 116 area this guy is worth a try cheap n cheerfull nice garden and surroundings, steak chips n salad about 50 baht,

Re: Mr Sing back open
Next little soi if you're coming from town.
Parallel to it.

Re: Mr Sing back open
^ Yes, it's actually a dirt/gravel soi. From town go a couple of hundred meters past Soi 116 and watch for a road on your right with big signs on the fence on either side of the road that say "Mini Golf". Go up the dirt road to the end and Mr Sings is right there on the corner (house on corner but garden restaurant just to the right of the house). When you get to the house continue straight beside it to the parking lot behind it. The Mini golf is down at the end of the soi in front of the restaurant (running to the right from the road you came up on).

Re: Mr Sing back open
Went there today a little late at 3.00pm on an overcast day. Word of warning - mossies were vicious! Food OK, but nothing to write home about in my opinion. My TGF (who loves her food - don't they all?) took just one mouthful of her papaya salad (som tam Thai) and pronounced it "bad" (whatever that meant!). It must have been really bad because when it was elegently presented to the dog on a banana leaf she refused to eat it too. Never been known to refuse any food previously that dog! Rest of the food passable to good.
Mr Sing himself very friendly and the restaurant very dog friendly - he says he has over 20 dogs on the premises!
Overall, at nearly 500 baht for 2 (4 dishes, 1 inedible, 1 Fanta, 1 large Leo and a Mekhong for the road) I'd much prefer the fish restaurants in Khao Takiab on the river's edge when next I'm in the area.

I used to be indecisive - but now I'm not so sure!

Re: Mr Sing back open
Yeah, my missus said his Som Tam wasn't great, the rest I've found decent.
I wasn't really recommending it as a place to go out for the evening, just a decent little typical thai place for people this end of town.

...and value for money. It's certainly not the best Thai food in town, but good for the cheap price and delivery if you live in the area. I actually liked the somtam but then I'm a farang so what do I know.

Re: Mr Sing back open
"Value for money"? Not unless you live virtually next door. I don't live in the area so Mr Sing's location is not a major drawcard for me. Having said that it's still closer to me than the Naab Thong right at the end of Soi 88 but I'd go there for preference anyday anytime (much, much better food, great cocktails and quite a deal cheaper).hhfarang wrote:...and value for money. And if you are in the Khao Takiab area, what's wrong with the excellent little fish restaurant(s?) right where the fishing boats moor up? Couldn't possibly be any fresher!

Re: Mr Sing back open
As I said the place is cheap and cheerfull run by a nice guy in pleasant surroundings, never had a bad meal yet and great value for money,To spend 500bht you must have had hell of a big mekhong for the road.
Re: Mr Sing back open
I live on 116 every year for three months. This is great news! There are only a couple of places to eat farlang food near soi 116. I will check it out in a couple of weeks and delivery! Perfect for those days I don't want to leave to get food. Thanks for the post!
Re: Mr Sing back open
Not sure but I think I read that dogs are not meant to eat fruit or vegies. They need meat and are ok with grains. Their digestive systems aren't made to handle everything we eat, so you may be doing your dog harm by feeding him/her human meal leftovers that are not meat or grain based. Also, surprised to read that the dog would eat other somtam as it is spicy and that will usually back even a starving soi dog away.My TGF (who loves her food - don't they all?) took just one mouthful of her papaya salad (som tam Thai) and pronounced it "bad" (whatever that meant!). Anyway, Sings is convenient, cheap, and the food is good enough for me and the missus, especially with it's delivery so that's why I use it. I would certainly prefer Naab Thong but as I don't get out much and it's far from my home I don't end up there as often as I would like. If it was right around the corner I would probably be eating there three or four times a week."Value for money"? Not unless you live virtually next door. Have you tried "Mr. Mon" on Soi 112 about a block west of the 7/11. Some good Thai and western food there too; worthwhile if you live in the area.I live on 116 every year for three months.
