Ocean surges slowing down flood drainage: expert

Flood run-offs from Bangkok and other provinces in the Central region are moving south toward the estuaries of Chao Phraya River at a slower speed because there is a mild ocean surge, a water-management expert told a seminar in the capital yesterday.

Royol Jitdon, member of a government water-management committee, said data collected at the Chulachomklao Fort showed that the surge was 40 centimetres above sea level.

He said he had known about these surges all along but had chosen not to speak about it publicly because he did not wish to cause panic.

Phisit Phiboolsiri, an official with the Samut Sakhon irrigation department, also said that news about the ocean surges had been kept under wraps for fear it would scare away foreign investors thinking of setting up operations in the coastal province. (That's the spirit, just lie about it! :banghead: )

He said one of the factors contributing to the higher surge is a monsoon - the first in recent years - travelling north from the Gulf of Thailand and hitting winter winds from China. "The surges and this monsoon will make flood and water management more difficult," Phisit said.

The monsoon, which might return next year, would have a greater effect in coastal areas that do not have mangroves to absorb ocean surges, Royol said, adding that many government agencies were aware of this natural phenomenon but could do nothing to prevent it.

He said that due to the surges, flood drainage would take longer and might even be extended to the third week of December.

Meanwhile, the government's flood-prevention committee yesterday urged the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to speed up the clearing of canals in eastern Bangkok and on the Thon Buri side.

Committee member Uthen Chartphinyo also said that the BMA should dredge up canals linking western Bangkok with Tha Chin River to speed up the flow of water.

This is eight days old but I think a pattern that will persist throughout the high season. Pete

Suvarnabhumi arrivals down 25%

Published: 15/11/2011 at 12:24 PM
Online news: Tourism

The number of tourist arrivals at Suvarnabhumi airport had dropped from an average 130,000 a day to about 100,000 because of foreign tourists’ concerns about the widespread flooding, the airport's acting director Somchai Sawasdipol said on Tuesday.

“They were uncertain about the flood situation and postponed their planned trips to Thailand for the moment,” he said.

Mr Somchai said the Airports of Thailand Plc had sent letters to various embassies, including Russia, Taiwan, Britain, Canada and Japan, assuring them that Suvarnabhumi airport has not been affected by the flood and is still providing services as usual.

That I think is a bigger problem than they are letting on. Areas are so blocked to prevent flooding elsewhere, drainage blocked by existing structures as well, combined with low ground....many places are never going to drain naturally, those areas will need pumping.

Then the game will begin in earnest. Who is willing to pay the most to be pumped first? A lot of seedy bastards are going to make a fortune before all this is over. Pete [/quote]

The unscrupulous thai's probably already have made a fortune off of this mess.

Another thing that has not had much mention is why ALL the Schools in Bangkok are still closed. I know that several Government Schools are being used as refuge centres, and there are many others that are still either under water or inaccessible. But why are ALL the Schools being treated the same?

My granddaughter attends a private Christian School that is neither under water, or being used as a refuge centre, but they are still closed.

I was speaking today to a teacher from one of the most expensive International Schools in Bangkok, and she told me that her School is now open, but some of the hoops they had to jump through are unbelievable.

Included, but not limited to, was a requirement that every parent had to sign a "request" and that every member of the board of directors had to agree and endorse the "request, before it could be submitted to the Ministry of Education. It was then listed for "consideration"!

Nobody can tell me just how the lost time is going to be made up. Evidently, some of the more concerned teachers have set up some online facilities for their students to at least try and make some progress.

Just another example of the dithering that goes on here I guess. :banghead:

CHINA TOWN FLOODING

Post by terry+carmen »

Has anyone been to Bangkok China Town recently. I need to do some serious shopping for the Somtawin School Annual Christmas Fete and want to know if I should take my boat, waders or snorkel?

Why don't we all move back to our home country... that'll teach 'em a lesson! :D :D :D
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Concerning schools I've heard or read about a few options being considered. First are half day Saturday and full day Sunday classes. If that turns out to be the case, I pity those students as they'll burn out. Next is to cut the Songkran end of year break to one week or so only. This means they charge right into a new academic year with little break in April-May with no additional major break until October 2012. The last is similar for International schools on a western schedule with the June-August year end break cut drastically. Pete

EDIT: Nereus, look at this link. You're granddaughter will enjoy it and it will help fill the gap. http://www.studyladder.com/

I checked the Bangkok Post online a few hours ago and there was no specific mention of that area, and there doesn't seem to have been much at all about the ChaoPraya going over round there either, other than a threat to the Palace which is going back 3 weeks or so and nothing much reported since. I'll be in Bangkok by Monday afternoon - Sukhumvit area - and will try to remember to report back then.

I'd agree with this one: build tunnels or more khlongs to help the water flow to the sea, to the sea.
