Discount on Greenfee? (Hua-Hin golf courses)

So what is going on around here and where does it happen? This section is for discussion on local events, festivals, and holidays as well as activities and things to do.

Discount on Greenfee? (Hua-Hin golf courses)

Post by Kjell-B »

I'll be staying in Hua-Hin 4 weeks of November and golf will be on the agenda most of the time.
Do anyone know where or how to get a discount on greenfee tickets?

Typically, if you book through an agent (who get reduced rates) you will get free transport to the course, but they have to make a living, thats their job. You can play at a reduced rate if you play with a member. The price of a round is just that, you aint gonna find a shop selling discounted it doenst make sense. Do you think the golf courses would allow that - i think not. Sorry but thats how i see it.
THe courses are lovely and you should have a great time.

Thanks for quick reply.
I was thinking more in the direction of a "volume" discount i.e. play 10 round and pay for 9.

One more thing. I'm going to buy me a new set of clubs which I will keep in my condo i Hua-Hin. Do you know the pricelevel compared to Europe (or Norway)

Like JW, I don't think there is such a thing as greenfee discount here. But be lucky and find some nice members to join as guests and you will pay 40-50 % less.

To me it seems clubs are more or less priced the same here as in Scandinavia, if they are originals. You can find a set of chinese copies in many of the shops here. It would typically cost you around half of what you would pay for the originals at home but three times the price you would pay for the copies if you bought them in China. The best deal should be to order clubs from a shop in China and have them sent to Scandinavia and then bring them to Thailand yourself. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with customs in Scandinavia (I should say Sweden, because I don't know about Norway). Make sure you get Taiwan made copies, though.

Kjell-B,

There's alot of people dealing in golf tours here, going through them will be slightly cheaper as compared to a walkin guest. It really depends on how much they charge for the service rendered, you might be lucky to find one who make you pay 9 for 10 rounds of golf. As for golf clubs, it is definitely more pricey in thailand than Europe or America even when compared with my hometown Singapore. If you are not very fussy, you may explore on the China made clubs but i do have friends who had bad experience with those clubs. Else you can always rent a set of clubs from the club house.

Kjell-B,

Original clubs here are about the same price as in the UK, i am not sure about the price in your country. Be careful of fakes, they are worthless. You could visit Thanya palza in Bangkok (near to Patpong 4) lots of good shops here and always the chance of pickingup second hand deals. I say again be careful! If you do not know the difference do not buy. There are decent shops in Hua hin but they are a touch more expensive than Bangkok.

JW,
I must say I don't agree that the copy golf clubs generally are useless. I have one set of Callaway Hawkeye plus a Cobra driver (all originals) in Sweden. When I wanted a set here in Thailand in order to not have to bring each time, I bought exactly the same combination of clubs from China (all copies) and there is no way I can notive any difference.

As I don't trust my own opinion (I'm a terrible golfer) I've had no less than five different pros test my clubs on the driving range, not telling if they were copies or originals. So far nobody has been able to tell if the clubs he was testing were originals or copies. And they all have thought the clubs are absolutely OK.

Nowadays I also have 3 "guest sets" of clubs (all Taiwan made copies) in my house here, for friends visiting. One spoon has been deemed to have a way too soft a shaft. Other than that, there has been no complaints. There have been some terrible rounds, though...

Gutte,

A good pro should be able to tell the difference. The shafts are not matched and the swing weights also are not set. But if you like them then thats ok. What i object to is sellers charging good money for sets that are worthless if you want to trade them in.
Happy golfing!

Don't you guys miss the sound a real wood makes when it strikes the ball, instead of the "PING" one hears everywhere now? I do. Yes, a real wood may not drive as far as a metal but geeze, there's more to the game than that. I found a place in the States that sells persimmon woods named Louisville Golf. I bought a driver, 3 and 5. You should see the looks I get at the driving range and on the course now when others hear the "sound"...LOL. :D Pete

And I remember the awful clunk the clubs made that meant that face had shifted, or that one of the screws in the base plate was coming loose.

I still have my McGregor persimmon driver in my garage. The head looks so small I wonder how I ever hit the ball with it. But then I also have some old size English balls, 1.62 rather than the now standart US 1.68 inches. Now they do look small.

Forgot to mention Jim. I started playing golf as a teen in the early 60's. All they had then were "woods" with metal shafts, and irons with metal shafts and a single grip choice. Then, a very long break with the game, about 25 years and when I came back, what did I see?...metal woods. They are as foreign to me as the man in the moon. If the ball looks too small, I just put on my reading glasses secured by my Nike head band. :D Pete

Technology helps fight the ageing process. I play to about the same standard I did more than 20 years ago. But as you say that was with metal shafts throughout (when stiff really meant it), a set of blades, woods made from laminate and balls that were either as hard as granite or pure rubber (remember the surlyn covered Titleists that cut in half the first time you got one a bit thin?) And there was nothing like a lob wegde - if you wanted to get something airborne, you had to cut it up yourself. Ah, the good old days.

Be careful, the mods may relegate us to the old foggy section soon. Hell, I'm only 56 and can still slam the mother but my knack for slice or hook or iron loft/distance control is totally gone...as reinforced by the words of my little caddy, Noi who keeps saying...Petea...wat you do???..LOL. In my own defense, I do have a bad right shoulder and that fact hits the brain with each and every swing and throws things off.

Anyway, it would be impossible to have a challenge match, one with "old" style equipment and one with "new".

It would be interesting though to see the results of the same person playing with both on separate days if the equipment was available. Pete
