As the flood waters inundate Bangkok over the next few days, escapees will inundate Hua Hin:

And on water borne disease as MrPlum alluded to in an earlier post:

There is definitely something amiss in the social balance in this country when things like this are revealed:
...............................................................

Chatuchak vendors clear out but millions of baht still at risk

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/2 ... ll-at-risk

........................................Tanapat Matchaykulwanit, 34, Top Arowana Agency fish store owner, said relocation is crucial to his business because a single super red arowana can cost up to 6 million baht. He has more than 100 fish at the store..................................

Decided last night that we would use the pick-up to the airport, more height and as soon as the family found out all sorts of donations have turned up and we are fully loaded. We will drop off on the way there or back.

Yes, this needs to be highlighted.
There's a lot of negative comment on here from Europeans who would never have allowed their country to get into this sort of mess bla-bla-bla, but there is an open-hearted generosity and desire to help others from all the Thais I know, including those who have very little. It showed itself at the time of the tsunami and during the floods a few years ago and it's very evident now.
Criticise the politicians by all means, but let's show a little respect for the people. :thumb:

This morning on Sky news they are telling people to restrict their travel to BKK unless vital.
High tide water for the centre of BKK is forcast later. It is awful for Thailand. Sky news reported that the floods may head south towards the Gulf of Thailnd. (I think that was what was said) A terrible situation.

WTF? Some of this reporting is just BS:
.......................................................................
90% of Don Mueang airport flooded

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... rt-flooded

Published: 28/10/2011 at 03:43 PM
Online news:

About 90 per cent of Don Mueang airport is flooded, airport director Kanpat Mangkalasiri said on Friday.

Capt Kanpat said the water level at the country's main domestic airport was measured at 50 centimetres. Small vehicles could not enter the airport, he said.

Don Mueang personnel continued to drain water from the airport but the water level continued to rise, he said.

Capt Kanpat said two runways were still operational and the flood had not affected the airport's overall operation.

Officials were closely monitoring the flood situation as the water level on Vibhavadi-Rangsit road was almost equal to the height of the airport's protection wall at about 1.20 metres high, he said.

Sukhumvit sois 48, 50 flooded

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... it-flooded

Published: 28/10/2011 at 02:51 PM
Online news:

A section of a dyke along Phra Khanong canal has collapsed, releasing an enormous amount of water into Bangkok's Sukhumvit soi 48 and soi 50.

Khlong Toey district chief Wiparat Chaiyanukit said on Friday the breach was about 10 metres long.

Mrs Wiparat said about 50 soldiers and workers from the Department of Drainage and Sewerage were piling up sandbags to plug the opening in the dyke.

The dyke should be repaired before high tide this evening, she said.

A bridge on Sukhumvit soi 62 and nearby elevated roads were filled with cars and motorcycles as motorists feared that the rising water would damage their vehicles.

This is right adjacent to my Condo, BUT, Soi 48 is on the North side of the Klong, Soi 50 is on the South side of the same Klong! :cuss:

I'm sorry to hear that and it's worth remembering the human impact of this flood:

We left HH 2 hours earlier than normal, arrived at the airport 2 hours earlier than normal. Traffic was fairly steady going, outgoing was busy, but I would say no busier than a normal holiday Friday. International part of the airport was as normal. I did not see any signs of flooding, the only thing out of the ordinary was the vehicles parked on the slipways of the express way.I spoke with a guy from one of the airlines and he said that a 3rd of stafF had not shown up today and he reckons that is what could eventually curtail the flights.

Edit....and no trains south. Hua Hin should have a quiet and safe weekend at all rail crossings. :D

The State Railway of Thailand cancelled all south-bound train services from Bangkok Friday.

SRT spokeswoman Nualanong Wongchan said all services from Bangkok to the South for Friday were cancelled.

She said the services had to be cancelled because the rail tacks between Bang Sue and Bang Bamru stations were inundated and the water was over 48 centimetres high.

Services to northern and northeastern provinces operated as usual, she said.

From the letter section of the Bangkok Post: "The pattern of rainfall

I have a columned wall calendar in my kitchen which is useful for highlighting important dates throughout the year and other things. For the last few years I have been marking rainy days out of interest as they have appeared to arrive earlier each year.

The first significant rainfall in this area (Ram Intra) started on Feb 15 and was intermittently heavy after that (especially in March) until the early onset of the monsoon. Moreover March and April were relatively cool when they should have been oppressively hot."

I've read from a variety of sources that 2012 will again be much the same as above. If correct, it doesn't leave much time to do what needs to be done to prevent a repeat of events come next October. Don't believe it when you hear people say this year's floods are a 100 year event. Pete

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere. Earlier in the week I had to drive to the international airport to meet someone. Traffic and roads ok all the way there (no toll charges) but finding a car park at the airport was a nightmare. Car parks were full with 'refugee' cars avoiding the floods, very hard to get a spot (at that time - around midday). Ended up parking on one of the ramps between floors.

More positive news in that the northern trains are back running again. I hope we can begin to focus on a steady stream of positive news in the week to come. Pete
