Works fine here, Firefox 5.

Hopefully that storm will dissipate a fair bit as it crosses land.

The north and northeast continues to get inundated. Too bad they can't store all of it for later. Pete

Warning

"Abundant rain over North and Northeast"
No. 10 Time Issued : August 20, 2011

The strong monsoon trough lies across northern and northeastern Thailand and the moderated southwest monsoon cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf. Abundant rain occurs over the upper country. Heavy rain, with isolated very heavy rain, is likely much of the North and Northeast. People in the risky areas along foothills and near waterways are warned of severe weather and flash flood during a few days.

Because of water level continued to rise in the Prachin Buri River, together with the heavy rainfall in the East of Thailand. People in A.Mueang and A.Kabin Buri, C.Prachin Buri should beware of the water overflows over riverbank caused by heavy rain during this period.

Looks like the rainy season is not going to end this year. Fine with me and I hope it simply links up with the hot season thundershowers next spring and keeps going. I also hope we have a 15-18c Holiday Season again. :D Pete

BANGKOK
La Nina to raise risk of flooding
By The Nation
Published on August 23, 2011

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2011/08 ... 63432.html

Heavier rainfall feared in coming months; Bangkok 'at greater risk'

Instead of the wet season ending as usual in October, La Nina will play a crucial role in precipitating heavier and longer downpours for the rest of the year, putting Bangkok at greater risk of flooding during seasonal peak tides.

Tropical storm Nock-Ten brought extra rainwater and caused early flooding, while La Nina will extend the season, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Drainage and Sewerage Department reported yesterday.

The inundation of the Central region came early this season and Ayutthaya is still submerged.

Massive releases of water southwards will soon take place to relieve brimming reservoirs, the office said.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the grave situation this year raised concern for 27 large communities outside flood embankments if the river exceeded 1.7 metres. The dykes could cope with 2.5 metres of floods.

Phitsanulok in the lower North is still suffering from heavy flooding - at the highest level in 16 years, provincial authorities said.

The Nan River has reached 10.31 metres, short of the critical level by only 20 centimetres. The situation was described as worrying by the provincial irrigation office.

The Nan River could swell in the next few days, especially at Noi Temple and the old Rama cinema.

Mayor Premruedee Champhoonut called on residents not to fear, but remain cautious and alert for warnings from authorities.

A flood check would have to be conducted on an hourly basis and the Nan River's engorgement to 10.4 metres would be considered critical.

By then Sirikit Dam would have to drain at a higher rate to ease the situation. Phitsanulok's urban areas would be safe but flood levels would be heightened elsewhere and in other provinces.

Riverside communities or those in low-lying areas are at risk of flash floods due to sudden river surges in eight provinces - Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan - while mudslides may form in five provinces - Chiang Rai, Lampang, Chiang Mai, Phayao and Nan.

Farmers from Phichit protesting against flood drainage were keeping up their confrontation at a sluice gate in Pho Prathab Chang while under close watch by police, who had to separate the two sides from fighting each other and trying to open the gate.

Those affected, living in Muang district, later retreated and threatened to launch demonstrations and block roads if the floodgate remained closed for a few more days, while those living in Pho Prathab kept guard at the gate.

In Lamphun, all eight districts have been swamped, with 37,183 people in 17,350 households in 415 villages affected.

Relief kits were distributed to flood victims through the Democrat Party, which had received donations of Bt4.2 million from the public and companies.

This is turning into something I've never seen. Undoubtedly the Chao Praya is going to be at record levels and Bangkok will have flooding this year. I would think you'll see the effects on the Hua Hin coastline as well as all of this flushes out into the sea over the coming months. Pete

Pattaya is underwater, so much so that a friend of the wife called yesterday and said the police had blocked off entrance from the south on Sukhumvit, and turning cars around at Outlet Mall on Treppasit road. No through traffic allowed at all at least during that time period.

The Jesters Care For Kids fair was scheduled for yesterday and don't know if called off or not. Over 100 stalls and all proceeds going to kids charities. Their biggest fund raiser of the year with millions of Baht raised. A real pity if off and I hope they reschedule if possible. :( Pete

A small photo from the Thai Daily News. Like this on Sukhumvit between South Pattaya Road and Central, and between Central and North Pattaya Road.....and in all areas to the west down to the beach. In other words, the entire city was/is underwater. Pete

EDIT: One explanation seems to be that due to very high tides, the drainage pipe outlets are beneath sea level. If so, not much is going to drain out. The new drainage pipes they installed where the photo shows are huge, 1 1/2 + meter in diameter.

Keep your feet dry over there Pete. I read where a Pattaya crocodile farm flooded and close to a hundred crocs escaped and are now swimming around in the flood waters looking for food...

Flood warning for central plains

Post by STEVE G »

The Natural Disaster Warning Centre on Wednesday morning issued a warning for people in the central plains, including Bangkok, to brace for possible flooding from today to Sept 17.

The Chao Phraya River could overflow its banks and flood parts of the central provinces of Bangkok, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Ayutthaya, Singburi, Chainat, Ang Thong, Pathumthani, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan, the centre warned.

People living along the banks of the Chao Phraya and outside the flood prevention walls should prepare for the floods and move their belongings to safe areas, it said.

The centre had instructed local offices to be on alert to provide assistance where needed.
