Hi all,
I have just come to Hua Hin for an extended sojourn of around 2-3 months. I have been living up in Chiang Mai and have been leading hikes up there as part of the Chiang Mai Hiking group. http://cmhike.com
Am keen to continue my hobby of scouting out interesting hiking trails 10 km and up for day trips and over night trips here around HH. I have bought a load of 1:50,000 military maps from the Royal Thai Survey Department and intend to use them to scout out interesting areas for exploration. I find it fun, a little like a treasure hunt to scout out trails, information can be difficult to come by in Thailand about trails but there are some great places to explore I have found.
Kaeng Krachan National Park looks really interesting. Apparently it is the biggest national park in Thailand. Will definitely be going up there. I have several military maps that cover that area, and some of the maps are just completely forest with no roads at all.
I wonder if anyone has any gps trails they could share with me of interesting places to visit, or tips on areas or helpful local guides, also information on where dogs are allowed and not allowed (in practise I mean, in theory dogs are not allowed in any national park). Also finally am interested in meeting others who would also like to get out and explore.
I went on my first Hash House Harrier run the other day and that was fun. It seems they have another run next week http://www.cah3.info/misdirect.html

Hi Jamie
Next time you go to HHH have a chat with Don (a.k.a Ballbanger) he's been arranging the odd non-Hash hike here and there, might be a source of info for you.
Cheers

Have now got all the military maps I bought for exploring scanned and working in Google Earth and in my hand held GPS. You can see from the attached image that the maps cover most of Phetchaburi and the top half of Prachuap Kiri Khan.
Have found a good resource for info on Kaeng Krachan National Park http://whiteheadimages.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=23&t=54

Thought you were back up north. How much longer will you be here?
I intend to go out on a hike 13th or 14th.

We had a fun trip up to one of the peaks of Sam Roi Yod National Park the other day. See some pics here :

We are going to explore the area more. We have found several little known trails in the park.
On Friday this week we will be driving down there again for an exploratory trip.

Several of us are gonna hike up Kao Nang Phanturat on Friday and then go watch the bats.
If you want to join us meet at PTT near the 201km marker 5 km north of the Cha Am traffic light at 3:30pm. If you know the park, just go there and we will head up at 4.
After the hike and the bat watching we'll go and eat some dead chicken and maybe have a Leo near the 195km marker on Petchkasem.
Please let me know if you intend to join us.

Re: searching for other hiking enthusiasts
Nice to know there are people in the HH area who share similar interests as I.
I do a little winter mountaineering and walking/hiking/climbing/wild camping all year round, when time allows.
I hope to get a holiday home of some discription in the near future in this area and want to spend more time in the HH area, so would be only too happy to join you for hikes when im over there?
I will have to become accustomed to the temps, but being fairly fit, dont see it being too much of a problem.
I hope you get some great hikes in and maybe i'll see you in the near future.
