Young family moving to Thailand ??????

Hi all,

I was walking around a carboot sale in the UK last weekend, and met a young family selling up everything.

After a short chat the guy mid 20's told me they ( girlfriend and 7 years old daughter ) were all moving to southern Thailand to make a new life.

I was very unsure if I would make the same decision with a young family.

Do you think they will encounter many problems, he talked about working in bars on markets etc. obviously had no trademans skills.

Would you have done the same when you had the chance !!!

Well, he's obviously not researched it much if he thinks he's working in bars or in markets etc. The only place you could get away with that was on the diving islands 10 or so years ago, forget it on the mainland.

Was his wife Thai?

I arrived in LOS in my mid to late 20s and really should have come 5-10 years earlier to move things along quicker but I was single when I got here, different ball game, and more chances of dealing with all the changes.

If his Mrs is a westerner then he'll soon grow up and have to be super organised to stay. Plus if his Mrs is western then he's going to have a lot of temptation to deal with as young western guys are liked by the girls and he's in a candy shop as opposed to the sexually repressed UK.

If he does it, he's either got balls or has no idea what he's getting himself into imo.

Good luck to him, but it won't be plain sailing or some fantasy life by the beach, those days are gone, 10-15 years ago.......maybe.

Wonder what his expectations are or what convinced him to do it?

I reckon it'll be one of the sharpest learning curves for him to be found, expectations in your twenties vs reality in South East Asia.

Being single, you can manage it, but hitched with a 7 year old is a different matter at that age.

↑Agree. The real key to this is if his wife is Thai. If so, he (they) have a chance. If not, not a snowball in hell unless he's extremely wealthy or has parents who are, and they finance him. Pete

No coin, no kids, no wife ... no stress. Those days rocked!

I will add though that before TRT and the 'clampdown crew' came into power getting a work permit and a job here was a lot easier.

True Buksida, true.......but will add that in those days getting a work permit was optional, many just didn't bother (including the establishment involved) and worked openly on a tourist visa outside BBK.

That all ended about 7-8 years ago though, started getting a bit stricter.

Will not see the guy again and yes is wife is English, not all pain sailing I think, return flights may be the option sooner than later, but hope his dream comes true.

This young guy might be an Oasis fan, and have been listening to the song 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' with lines like..........

Oh, to be 20-25 again.....cool....but......he's not single and has responsibilities, will be nothing but trouble for him.

Wish I'd had the guts to do it. Lets hope it works out okay for them.

Will they make it?? Probably not (but I hope they do). But, they will have a story for the rest of their lives, and if young, can make it up financially

Like Buksida I made the move in my early twenties (came a few days before my 21st birthday) no money to my name, no job etc - Had my father's place to crash at though! It was supposed to be a 6 month holiday... 7 years later I'm still here amd can't see myself changing my location for a while (If I ever do it certainly won't be England but somewhere else in Asia)

The difference is that I had no responsibilties at all. With a wife and kid, unless they have a large sum of money to come with, I can't see their being anything other than a stressful situation. The kids schooling alone will need a half decent income yet alone the wife wanting to have a life other than staying at home every day.

Good luck to em anyway. I hope they prove all us doubters wrong.

Good on them. At worst, they'll have memories to last a lifetime.


With that said, they have virtually no chance of making it. First of all, unless they have a considerable amount of money, there are no visa options for them apart from tourist visas, and even those may soon become restricted even more than they already are.

Also, as has been mentioned, the kid needs to go to school, and I'm not sure that's even possible for a Farang child if both parents are on a tourist visa.

Thirdly, once money starts getting tight, and a job is not easy to come by, their marriage will more than likely start taking strain.

And, even if it doesn't, will he be able to resist the temptation he's no doubt going to come face to face with here.


Anyway, hats off to them, and hopefully they have a great time here.

Alternatively, of course, they might be car boot sale regulars who make up a different story every week to help pass the time!

It is a shame we are never going to know how they get on or if they really do move here. I say good luck to them but I feel it is going to be a struggle.
