Speed cameras/speed limit signs
Speed cameras/speed limit signs
I saw a "speed limit camera" sign on the bypass the other day, and on the "not to be mentioned" forum tonight I see they've apparently put one up by the flyover.
I noticed more than a year ago that there seem to be no more speed limit signs anywhere.......or I'm going blind possibly.
It makes me wonder just what the speed limits are any more......80kmph? 140kmph (what many nutcases on Petchkasem seem to be doing nowadays), any difference between in town or out of town?
Comments please...........and don't tell me it's in the driving manual which I know is a phallacy (pun intended). Someone posted pages to one a few weeks ago and it made for some belly laughs but didn't shed much light on Thailand's current rules of the road.

Don't know any specifics T.I.G.R.
But, I believe these cameras probably only hold something like about 500 or so shots before they need changing for a new set, or changing the memory card if digital cameras. Don't want to sound too cynical but I reckon they will take all those snaps of offenders in about a couple of hours really, then has to wait for a refill, which could be weeks knowing the way money is so seldom spent on what it's allocated for.
This kind of thing requires proper funding and operation to work, they might do it for a bit but can't imagine that these cameras will be refilled on much of a regular basis.
Just too many offenders here but if it slows down the lunatics even a bit then could be a good thing, but I doubt it. If, however, they did do it properly then they would realise how much of a money spinner it can be.
Collecting the fines would be a completely different kettle of fish though, what a nightmare that would be, if possible at all.
Would be better to get more boots on the ground doing their jobs properly and enforcing the law as it stands in the first place without favour or prejudice.
Yeah, in my dreams.

Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
This question has come up before, and it cannot be answered accurately. The only speed limit signs that I have seen on highways is along the ring road around Bangkok, and the electronic ones on the expressways. And some along near the Palace in Hua Hin.
Last week there was a manned camera about 10 or so kilometers north of Phetchaburi town, on the south bound side. Typical of what goes on here: there are pricks doing over 100 kph along Petchkasem Road near the Hua Hin Hospital, and many other places where the MIB could do some good, and collect some tea money, but they choose to set up on a straight stretch of highway outside of a built up area. I usually try to keep around 100 kph on the highway, but in doing so have to ensure to stay in the left lane, as most others will be flying past. (except for the imbeciles that INSIST on travelling at 60 kph in the fast lane

Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
I was sent fine to my old condo in Bangkok from the Petchaburi High way police, seems like they hiding on some limited speed part and laser cars down. 400 baht..:-)
Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
Yes, they take photos and send the bill for the fine to the place where the auto license is registered. If you don't pay they will catch up with you when you go for your annual registration (plus a big penalty), I've heard.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
There is one before you get to Prachuab, a little van with a camera in it snaps you as you're going past and the road block is about 5km down the road before the intersection.
Just done my driving test and had to sit through hours of videos so can confirm the legal speed limits for cars/bikes are:
Inside city limits/tessabahn: 80kph unless otherwise indicated.
Outside city limits: 90kph
Highways only where indicated: max 120kph

Thanks Buksida -
The first "good" information I've ever heard about this.
Sitting through hours of videos is something new.....how long have you had your license here?

I dont think they following through central system with those fine, its stated I need to pay in 15 days, I did pay after 3 months or so, same amount and no trouble at all...hhfarang wrote:Yes, they take photos and send the bill for the fine to the place where the auto license is registered. I've had a Thai car license for about 7 years but never got round to doing the motorbike one, I've posted a full rundown of whats involved here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17593T.I.G.R. wrote: Sitting through hours of videos is something new.....how long have you had your license here?

Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
Interesting. I've had mine for a little over four years and am now working on a five year license. First one I got in Hua Hin....did the string test and color blind test is all. Second time for the five year in Cha Am. I guess because it was a renewal they skipped all of what you had to do. All I did was get a new picture and pay my fee. Same for the wife, although she got her five year before me because she was Thai. I had to wait until I'd been the country three years If I remember correctly.

I know about that one, I have been caught with it twice, 400Baht a time.
When my wife went to pay the fine the first time the lady at the post office told her the location of the camera.
Correction
This is not the same one as I got the ticket sent to the house, two photos of the car with the time date and speed.

Hua Hin is now pretty much a cash-cow for motorists. They've got 'no-left turn' rules now at all major traffic lights, police boxes with bent cops on the make for tourist and expat cash, plus the speed camera's.T.I.G.R. wrote:I saw a "speed limit camera" sign on the bypass the other day, and on the "not to be mentioned" forum tonight I see they've apparently put one up by the flyover.

Glad I ride a bike as they don't shoot 'backwards' but forward's in your face

Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
This is strange as about 4 years ago I got a my thai driving licence and motor bike licence (Had never been on a bike at the time) at the same time doing the color blind test (I'm color blind) and a what's the word, some sort of alert test by hitting a break when a light turned red. All I had to show was my UK licence and I think I had an international licence at the time. This gave me 1 year licences then I renewed for 5 years on expiration with new photos and proof of address.buksida wrote:I've had a Thai car license for about 7 years but never got round to doing the motorbike one, I've posted a full rundown of whats involved here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17593T.I.G.R. wrote: Sitting through hours of videos is something new.....how long have you had your license here?

Re: Speed cameras/speed limit signs
The govt have tightened up a lot on getting licenses now in an effort to increase road safety standards. They still have a long way to go but it is a move in the right direction, the biggest problem on the roads is the lack of enforcement of the many road laws that do exist by the police who prefer to hide in bushes at the end of the month and nab motorcyclists.
