Best Broadband provider in HH

Post by johnnymac »

Hi there.

Finally, I've persuaded a client I'm working for in London to let me "work from home" in HH so will be back for good later on in the year - hooray!!!! :D

However, I'll need a reasonable broadband connection for this. What sort of speeds, reliability etc. can you expect these days and who's the best provider?

I've had a quick search but can't find anything up to date.

Bit of a moot point really man, all pretty useless really, but someone will give you a 'best option in a bunch of bad options' recommendation. They have not even sorted out 3G properly here, never mind 4G.

If they sorted that (3G/4G) out properly then I'd ditch the land line imo. But therein, ironically, maybe is where the problem is.

A local in HH will give the best option for now though. :thumb:

I'd ditch the land line
Think carefully before doing this. I made a stoooopid mistake by doing that just to save the 100-something baht per month minimum charge. We had not made a call on the land line in months so I told the wife to cancel it. Afterward I remembered that my home alarm system has a dialer wired to the land line that makes a recorded security call if the alarm goes off (handy when no one is home!). I sent the wife down to reinstate the service and get the same number back and that cost me 2400 baht! :banghead:
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

This guide covers most options: http://expathuahin.com/internet-huahin.php

It generally depends on your location, the main two providers are 3BB (TT&T) and TOT, service varies depending on the area, True offer ADSL but only in the centre of town.

I need a good internet connection for my work, so I have both 3BB and TOT, so that if there is an issue with one then I can change over to the other.
At the moment I use 3BB most of the time as my default setting, for no other reason than it was the first one I set-up.
My head office is in the US, so I tend to do most of my large down/up loads between 00:00 and 04:00.

Ditto.. We are located "downtown" and use 2 services, True and 3BB. True is the most reliable.

Thanks for all feedback everyone, especially the article buksida - just what I needed.

Looks like it's either 2 connections or a single one and run down to Sunshine if it goes down.

My working hours aren't quite as antisocial as yours dozer so I might get away with the latter.

Yes they certainly are antisocial, but I get paid my full salary for only 16/20 hours a week so can’t complain :D

if you do get a 3BB account there are two factors to take into account:

First - you may as well just get the "cheap" 500bht 4Meg account as the differences between that and the so called Premier service seem negligable. during the day this week (when the net runs at its slowest) Ive been clocking downloads in the high 600kbs....when I had a much more expensive Premier account it ran at the same or slower. Premier just applies to the price they charge, not the service.

Second - the people who staff the 3BB shop are total idiots...and I do mean TOTAL idiots. They can and will consistently mess up billing, and are NO help when things go titsy. As with all Thai ISPs the helpline in BKK is also pretty useless, and "Ill call you back" means "Sod off Im doing my nail varnish and cant be arsed if your line is down".

Get your thai partner to communicate with the shop...that or take Valuim before going through the door.

Good luck mate

I hear what you are saying sandman and even though I can speak Thai, I would always get my wife to call if I had any issues, but fingers crossed I’ve had no issues.

I have 6mbt 3bb service for 631 THB. The download is very fast(700 kb/s), but upload is only 30kb/s. The line went down twice in 2 months time, both times I called BKK support(speaking good English) line and they fixed it after few hours. Both times they called back to verify that everything is ok after restoring the service.

I seem to have a more favorable impression of the folks in the local 3BB office. I moved to HH about three weeks ago and transferred my 3BB Premier 3Mb/1Mb account from Pattaya over here.

The gal at the counter (apparently she's the only English speaker) understood my query, and after asking pensively for my account number (which I had no clue) typed a few things in the computer and said, yes, they could do it within five days. I didn't press her whether it was five calendar days or five work days, but in three days a 3BB tech (with two teenage-looking sidekicks) showed up in the morning to install my line.

They ran a new cable from a pole a few houses down the street, up into my attic space and down into the room where I wanted the outlet. I was pleased with the new length of a continuous single cable right in to my room. I had heard stories of ISP's only installing wiring to the exterior of the home, and leaving the interior wiring to the owner. He verified that I had a connection and left.

After he left I noticed that my speed was less than 2Mb/512Kb, and returned to the gal at the 3BB office to verify they had the right speeds showing in their computer for my account. She understood, checked and replied that it correctly showed my 3Mb/1Mb service and said a technician would be out to check on things.

The next morning a different tech guy showed up. I showed him my dismal Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 6 and he grinned and nodded. He checked the connection of the wires at the outlet in my room and then left for about 20 minutes. When he returned, I had my full 3Mb/1Mb connection and my SNR was 40 (!).

Yeah, I could grouse about initially having a sub-standard connection, but all-in-all I'm pleased with the 3BB service, especially in the office on Phetkasem Road.

Rejoice while you've got it - it wont last!

Just installed a new 6Mb line which actually runs as 6Mb .. at 4am. 3BB are trying hard but they're still Mickey Mouse when it comes to serious hard wired internet.

We were lucky enough to have a resident of our complex pay in advance for a CAT Internet line to be run to our housing estate (he works for a large Thailand farang website). CAT is the master provider of internet service for Thailand and all others just rent bandwidth from them. I previously had TOT internet which has to be the slowest and worst. Paying for 4megs down and received between .9 and 2 megs. 1 meg down and received .19 at best. Many outages with service during the day also. With CAT I have 2meg up and 1 meg down and really receiving download speed and .8 meg upload (I may have it reversed on Upload and Download speeds as it is at times confusing to me) so nearly getting what I am paying for for a change. Am paying for Premium Service and it is sure worth it as the time spent in front of the computer is much less now due to speed of internet to and from computer. Very, very few outages also and if so only for a few seconds, not the minutes we used to have with TOT.
