Got a cold? It's "official" - eat more curries

Post by lomuamart »

I always used to think a really chili hot meal was good for you if you had the sniffles - sweat it out of your system.
It appears now that fenugreek is the magical ingredient. I must admit that in years gone by, when I've stocked up on Indian spices in Penang whilst doing visas runs, I've never bothered to look for any.
Can you get these seeds in HH?

Fenugreek isn't easy to find. Had to bring mine in from the UK. If I get a cold, I increase my body temperature by taking a mixture of fresh Basil, Ginger and Cloves , crushed, then made into a decoction and drunk throughout the day. Likewise with a fever, I'll sweat it out overnight. No food for 24 hours though and keep your fluids up with warm distilled water.

How has that affected your recovery time?

I believe you could find the fenugreek seeds in HH. You could go into the Chinese Medicine shop and ask them for it call ลูกซัค in Thai. My cousin has Boat Noodle bar and use a lot of old herbs to make the soup and only 1 place you could get them all is in the Chinese Medicine shop.

Thanks. I'll try a Chinese pharmacy.
Although the cold has passed, I could do with the funugreek for some of my curries anyway.

I've only had one cold and shivery fever in the last 10 years so only had the opportunity to test this remedy once, last year. After a sweaty night, I was fine the next day.

Makro should have ir as the selection looked pretty good and resaonably priced I buy my spices in Bangkok from a little Indian supermarket under the Rembrandt service apartments in soi 18 Sukhumvit. There plenty of others dotted about.

..Goat’s Horn....
Also known as 'Horny goat weed'. Think the Chinese use it as an aphrodisiac and is called 'Yin Yang Huo'.

The "story" goes that it got it's name from goat herders noticing their goats getting all promiscuous when they ate this weed.

Thought you all should know before rushing out to Makro.

However, it's also used to treat kidney, back, joint and liver disorders too though.

Maybe there's some crossed wires here then Steve, or there are two herbs with close names as looked it up on Google (under 'Goat's horn herb') and it came up with what I said.

Maybe MrP can sort it out for us when he sees this. You could well be right, my last reply was fun filled. :thumb:

Nonetheless, back to topic about the snivels etc, we could always talk about the remedy of 'downing' large amounts of vitamin C to 'hurry it along' and finish it quick.

In my experience a nose cold takes 8 - 10 days whatever you do.
So you just have to relax and take it easy.

Something I've never seen before is when my daughter gets a bad head cold, the hospital doc uses a syringe and flushes her nasal passages and sinus (to a degree) with saline solution. They then advise to do it at home once a day before she goes to bed. Seems to help greatly with recovery. Don't try it with curry though. Pete
