Wallpaper vs humidity

Post by MLS »

Good morning, house owners! Do you use wallpaper on the walls of your prooerty here? I was wondering if it could help to hide a multitude of sins or if it would be a dumb move to even think of it in this climate. What are your views?

Never used wallpaper in the LOS MLS but have seen it used small scale. With an anti-fungicidal paste in a largely air con space I would think they stay put and work OK. Probably even in spaces where fans are used very regularly.
Plenty of builders/developers on here who will be able to comment on plaster used and it's finishes, but obviously I would also size walls before papering as well.
One problem I've had in the UK - and which can happen anywhere - is with moisture seeping through from behind the paper - and with areas of 'dead air' where air doesn't circulate properly and moisture builds up on the surfaces. I'm thinking that with aircon or fans that is less likely to happen?

All I can say is that we had some installed in my daughters room a few months ago. So far, so good. I don't know the brand names of the glue, but he applied a clear type substance to the entire backing of the paper, then a white substance around the edges. There were quite a few bubbles after he was finished but advised not to touch them at all and they'll go away after about 3 days. Sure enough they did and where the bubbles were, the paper was fastened to the wall perfectly. This is a heavy, washable type paper with some kind of fabric in it to allow that. Room is open window in the day and aircon at night. If it starts to fall off, I'll post on this thread, hopefully 10 years from now. :D Pete

If you don't mind saying, how big is the room and what was the cost of doing that Pete?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

The room is kind of L shaped but we didn't do the part where the built in closet is. So, the floor space of the walls we did do is about 7 x 7 meters. The cost was about 17, because it's 'Barbie' imported brand wallpaper  Non-special name and it would have been around 9 I think. Pete

My Condo in Bangkok has wallpaper installed from when it was built, more than 10 years ago, maybe 14 years ago.
It has started to lift on the edges now, but I don`t think that is a bad life.
Like any finish applied, the preparation of the surface is the key to long life.

As Nereus rightly says - preparation is the key. if you are hoping to hide a 'multitude of sins' - and if you are meaning uneven plaster - bumps and hollows could still show through. Sometimes it is quicker and less hassle to get walls re skimmed IMO depending on their condition.

The wallpaper at my home in Hua Hin is 10 years old and still looks very good. The only damage is human - being careless with the backs of chairs.
