I've just clicked on a link for alarm systems - 12000B, does this sound about right?

After reading several of the recent threads on break ins and assaults etc i'm certainty going to fit an alarm system on my new build

I contacted SJ and he was very helpful even though I thought his system was not best suited for an occupied bungalow he recommended someone else what more can you ask of the guy :)

The main reason for not opting for a simple wireless system is I wanted break glass sensors on all windows in addition to doors so we are free to roam the house for a glass of water in the middle of the night.

The newer systems with autodialler can send you SMS or call and have an option for web feed remote monitoring even to your iPhone. CCTV is quite easy to get around on a bungalow IMO.

If you do not want an alarm system then cheap dummy cameras and siren boxes are widely available as a simple visual deterrent for little expenditure

Perhaps I shall contact SJ then and see what he can recommend... it's an awful feeling being scared in your own home and last night was no exception. I was convinced someone was in the the downstairs bathroom so I grabbed a kitchen knife and proceeded to investigate. Luckily it was just my paranoia taking over but still :(

Getting the relationship with the police and making them understand can be a hurdle. As far as I know there is not a dedicated centre in Hua Hin that handles security breaches. Simply have the installer program in the relevant details and Roberts your mothers brother. Pretty much any system comes with a panic button option in case you are home and the system not armed.

Yes, I know very well the the alarm can call out to a telephone, mine is setup that way. My astonishment was that you said that they dial the police. Enlighten us how it works and which station offers this service (toursit police?) as I'm open to surprises!

I'm just curious to find out whether in this particular incident an alarm system would have helped? What time of the day did it occur? Would the alarm be switched on if you had one?

We have an alarm system with the video and hard drive. We haven't had any incidents.

There are too many occasions where Thai burglars have been violent. It's not a pleasant thought.

I would highly recommend a system from SJ. Professional, First class, Freindly service. Also I dont think he is going to dissapear over night if you get any problems

Ive had mine over 2 years now and definetly gives reassurance. Easy to use and maintain. Also good deterrent.

Anyway if your still paranoid Ive heard the Rottweiler makes a good family pet and locals are sh** scared of them. :thumb:

haha mother and I went to the dog shelter to foster some pups for a few months in the vain hope that they'd be some sort of a deterrent... I'm guessing we shouldn't of opted for the cutest, most playful pups we could find....

We have a good relationship with the locals. The police are diligent and patrol regularly albeit we pay 1k per month for this between all houses. Not in a gated development. We have not, as yet, connected the alarm directly to the 24 hour phone of the local police as we have buildings ongoing with people staying right next to the house looking after the storeroom etc. Also the landline is very recent, less than a month and fairly fickle so far. The relationship and arrangement, already discussed, will be direct to the local police when the neighbours finish building. On the one (late at night and tippsy) occasion that I tripped the alarm and could not find the remote they were there in a few minutes so no complaints on service. And lots of apologies.

Simple fact is that if the person on the end of the line is 10 minutes away or 20 minutes away then that is how long your intruders have a window.

Actually, I didn't write this.

Have the same type of soppy dog, though. Ruined by the ladies in the house.

I don't think any deterrent keeps professional thieves out. Dogs get poisoned. Alarms get triggered until people stop responding. House is burgled while occupants are out. Weakest point of entry ascertained.

I've also heard of a couple of 'burglaries' where the Thai occupant stages the 'robbery'. Daylight opportunistic robberies occur too. Some impressively dressed individual will pretend they are interested in renting (or similar excuse). You invite them in and when your back is turned they have your Ipod, mobile, etc..

The UK is still far worse IMHO.

So the bottom line is that the link to the police with an alarm system has not been done!

How you gonna work it when they agree to it? Record your messages in thai and call the police number and hope for the best?

Not out to be confrontational crazy but TIT and these type of things take more than 1000 baht to work, ok if you are dealing with 1 copper but to the police station 24/7 then I doubt it.

My alarm calls me on my mobile phone if it is triggered (has a dialer that will call whomever you program it to). Then I can call a friend or neighbor to check out the situation (visually from a safe distance) first and then determine if the police need to be called. Never had a break-in (- me knocking wood -) in all the years I've lived here. Had one false alarm (wall alarm, not house) while in Bangkok, friends investigated and found that the house was not breached and everything looked ok so I called the alarm installer and had him turn the siren and flashing light off remotely and reset the system (which is also possible with a phone connection to the alarm). I didn't know how to do that so I just called the installer, gave him my code and let him do it for me.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I already pointed out that I am unaware of a central system in HH. HHF system calls his mobile phone. Therefore it can call any mobile phone. Simply have it saved as "Crazy 88 alarm" on the police mobile and it will alert the duty officer when it flashes up. Those on estates should connect it to the security guard ,perhaps with a loud ring tone to wake him up!

By sheer coincidence TOT have just arrived (on a sunday  ) to complete the phone and internet. We appear to have got the YTS boy but he has some kind of tester in his hand so hopefully all will be good.

As for the 1000 per month. For that we currently get regular day and night patrols and they sign a book when they visit if we are not here. If we are here and up and about during the day they drop in. They also inform us of any criminal activity in the area such as a couple of recent jewellery snatch and grabs by a young couple on a pink motorbike so as we are forewarned. Well worth a grand IMO

Phone working properly now :D Will ring SJ in a couple of hours when he gets up and find out how to program this system. I will let you know how I get on.

I believe my dads on/off Thai witch of a gf has been involved in something similar. Probably in hope that my dad would cough up for replacements. Had it been the household goods that were 'stolen' and not her personal jewellery then he would've footed the bill!
