I have to agree with Homer. On level crossings without any automatic systems in place, the train has the right of way. People have to take responsibility for their own safety when crossing 'naked' crossings.

As we don't know the details of this tragic incident, we can only speculate as to the cause. And I think it's perfectly ok on this forum to speculate as to what happened. IMHO there is no disrespect to the victim by discussing how dangerous these crossing are or if perhaps suicide could have been a possibility. The crass jokes are insensitive but expected in a public forum. Ignore the weasels.

Condolences to the family.

The gentleman in question was Greg Dickinson, he was about 55 and was a member of BRGC.
Service is at the temple on the way to Black Mountain at 4.00 pm next monday.
RIP.

One of Today's Thai Papers carries the story with a rather detailed photo on its front page. There is also, on the front page, a story and a much too clear photo of a Swiss man who hung himself. One of the things about Thailand that is hard for me to digest; photos of dead people in the newspapers and on TV. Goes to show the cultural difference in conception of life and death...

Yeah, thanks. While I'll never approve of it, I realize I'll have to live with it.

Tonight there will be a short memorial service in English & Thai for Greg (Robert) Dickinson at 7pm at the temple on the road to the Black Mountain Golf Course. From Petchkasem Road, turn into Soi 56. Cross the railway track (carefully please), then at the traffic lights, go straight ahead. The temple will be found approx 2 km on the right. Apologies for the lateness of this post!

On Sunday 5th Dec there will be a service in English for Greg at 2pm at Jai Samarn Church. Directions: Turn into Soi 47/1 from Petchkasem Road; go to the end, and the church is the last but one building on the right. The service will be upstairs.

The cremation will take place at 3.30-4.00pm on Monday 6th Dec at the same temple.

Thanks Richard. I'm not actually family, just a friend of Greg & Nini's. Happen to know the info so thought I would pass it on. I know many people were very fond of Greg and would like to know the details. See you there.

Hi Pam,I don't mean to sound grim, but do you know how it all happened, because as you can see in this thread, there has been some speculation. I have been told by an elderly Thai women that Greg did see the train, but it was already almost upon them and he froze? If that is correct, then I think it's quite understandable because nobody knows just how they would react in a similar situation. As I looking after young kids, I can't get to the service, but if you get a chance, please let his wife know we all offer out condolences.

I understand that his wife has said that he received a telephone call from a good friend in Australia just as he reached the railway crossing. He stopped and told his friend that he was about to go into the golf club and would immediately phone him back.
He then moved forward and possibly tried to beat the oncoming train and we know what happened next.
His friend phoned his wife to say that he had not returned his call and there was no reply on his phone. The wife also tried and then phoned the police.

A tragic accident and looking at this particular crossing from the main road side one can see that the drivers vision is initially restricted, however............ ?

Unfortunately accidents at Hua Hin rail crossings are certainly not a too uncommon problem it seems. Will the authorities ever think of installing more safety barriers/warning lights I wonder??
You don't need safety barriers if people use their eyeballs for a change!

I cross a level crossing (bikes only :) ) and If I acted like I was blaise I would be cut to pieces if I crossed with my brain stitched-off.

We have enough regulation in Hua Hin as it is without ramming it down peoples throats.

That is fine in daylight but at night, on a narrow and completely unlit soi, you don't need to be 'Blasé' to find that you have just driven across a railway track without realising it. Good illumination and signage is the base level of warning in my opinion. It has made a big difference to the crossing at the bottom of Soi 102.
