A Typical Thai Response

Post by Big Boy »

We went to Sport Villa today for a relaxing day by the pool - a pool that we've used many times and have always enjoyed it. Today, my grand daughters were playing in one of the small pools, when she came running back to see us. She was bleeding from 3 separate wounds on her leg (one about 1/16" deep). She had caught her leg on the side of the pool.

My wife reported this to the management immediately, and to their credit they had their handyman looking at the problem within 10 minutes.

After a while, the problem was identified, and he knew exactly what to do. It was a plastic strip on an underwater step that had come unattached needed re-attaching. At this point, you would think RESULT :D

This was the same pool 10 minutes later:

The hazard was still there, and my grand daughter had bled into that water (not that my grand daughter has any unwanted disease).

IMHO they should have closed that pool until it had been cleaned/repaired - however TIT  .

If they same thing happened in the UK, do you really think that they would have shut the pool down and completely drained it. I don't think so.

Actually I do think that is exactly what would have happened.

Britain is health and safety crazy these days and has becoming increasingly more litigious (had an accident or fall at work etc adverts on tv). The pool owners couldn't take the chance that someone would sue especially if it came to light that they were already informed about the problem.

In this case thou looks like another TiT example.

My daughter also injured herself in the same pool. The sand wash is razor sharp on the edge. She knows now to be very very careful. 4 year old.

That is pretty sad news to me, I have not lived in the UK since 1979 and boy when I hear things like this I am really glad.

Well, firstly would like to say that sorry to hear any children have been hurt anywhere, never Ok. However, this is not the Uk and everyone needs to know that this response experience by the OP is 'par for the course' here, no 'nanny squad' here that everyone is used to in the Uk. I see how visitors and tourists are beguiled until something goes south and then it's the real deal. Everyone should realise this, especially if they intend to reside here. The reason they do nothing is because they are not responsible to anyone that can't be bought. I understand that some will not like this post, just how it is IMO.

Something similar happened at our pool a few days ago, we completely drained and sterilized it before opening it up to the public again.

There's a thousand stories like this. Pattaya hotel which shall be nameless has a great hilltop pool overlooking the Gulf. Bar in the middle you have to swim to, and a great place to spend an afternoon. Pool has a ledge around the deep end for people to sit on and to help poorer swimmers. It used to be well marked with different colored paint. They renovated the pool and painted the entire thing the light blue color, including the ledge. A week after it reopened a Korean tourist jumped in, didn't see the ledge and broke his shin bone clean through, the bottom of his leg was dangling. This was in 1998 and the pool and ledge are still the same color, but they've erected a sign in Thai and English way at corner of the sunbathing area to "beware of underwater ledge". Pete

Why would anyone not like your post it is just your honest opinion.

Even the OP stated IMHO the pool should be closed and fixed. But he was very aware that TIT This is Thailand.

Honest opinions are just that honest opinions, we don't need to be liked just respected for out differences.

Thanks to everybody for their honest responses - very interesting. Before I add further comment, I would like to say that the injury will not stop us using that pool again, it simply acts as a warning to others that there is a hazard. There are 2 small pools, so we'll simply make sure my youngest grand daughter stays in the other pool. I've been coming to Thailand long enough to know the score, and my OP was really a statement of the mai pen rai attitude everywhere, as opposed to targetting a single establishment. I was actually impressed at the initial response.
If they same thing happened in the UK, do you really think that they would have shut the pool down and completely drained it. I don't think so.
There is a razor sharp underwater hazard in one out of three pools, which is predominatly used by children. Cleaning aside, I would imagine the only way to repair the damage is to empty the pool first (although I'm no expert). In the UK, they would not dare to keep that particular pool open with a known underwater hazard.
The sand wash is razor sharp on the edge.
That has been a constant problem during our visits this time. We have seen several children and adults alike with grazes resulting from this.

I agree with you mate, and have written several tims before, that the three words MAI PEN RAI are what keep Thailand backwards and crippled. The Asian obsession with saving face just amplifies the problem.

When nobody seems to ever take responsibility or initiative for doing anything nothing ever gets done, nothing ever changes.

The pool example is a macro level example. The handyman probably went back and reported the issue then because no manager took the initiative and said go fix it he left it as is. The manager wouldnt want to take responsibility for clearing the pool and getting it fixed in case his superior got offended/insulted because he hadn't been consulted....etc etc.

You see this on massive levels in the Post and Nation on a daily basis. PAD/UDD court cases (or ANY court case in fact) that drag on and on and on and on....because the judges sit and do nothing month after month, year after year rather than make decisions. Police that take so long to do anything that the offender is usually in another country before they decide to get active. Endless committes panels and talk shops that just flap on and on and on...nobody doing anything solid because that involves taking responsibility.

I see it every day on the micro level at home. The kids look inthe fridge, having drank all the bottles of water...no cold water. Go to the stack of water by the side of the fridge and take a warm bottle....and dont think to fill the fridge back up. Use the last of the bread, dont think to take any out of the freezer. In the bar sometimes the TV breaks down....we find out when one of us goes in and sees its not working, usually by then it being evening and too late to get it fixed. Ask the lasses why nobody called to tell us at noon when the bar opens...shuffle feet, look down, walk away....And so on and so on.

Its sad and its a damn shame....but no amount of trying will ever change it, because from birth they are taught those three damn words that turn taking the intitiative and having responsibility (rather than just duty) from a virtue to a vice.

I would say that not ALL Thais are like that. Some I know do take initiative and are get goers. They should be lauded and encouraged at every opportunity. Bobby our bar "manageress" is a star, but is rare. Im sure we all here know our own examples of active thais....but how many mai pen rai men do you know who sit and watch the house burn down rather than turn the hose on?

But the TIT responses...W T F???

A kid got injured. Whether TIT or not...the RIGHT thing to do is close the little pool down and fix the issue. The WRONG thing is to ignore the problem, and therefore potentially allow more kids to get hurt.

TIT spells Tit, and trotting it out makes you sound like one :tsk:

And before I get accused, as I usually do, of being anti-thai and "why are you here" get it in your head that complaining sometimes gets stuff done and is positive, and Id rathers see change than the house burn down.

Lack of common sense and regard to safety. why so many foreigners are required within a Thai company that wants to successfully deal internationally.
Along with untrained maintenance personnel.
Empting the small pool is easy and would cost nothing. The edging could then be bonded on and the pool restarted. Downtime 2 hour maximum.

I'm just happy my (Thai) step daughter lives in America where she is free to sue anyone anytime for any reason!  :D :D :D :D

Two of my mates have pools. One has tiled steps into the water, the other has 'safe' non-slip sandwash
steps into his.
So,so many times when the guy with the sandwash steps has a party someone gets hurt..cut or badly
grazed due to the rough texture being within the pool.

On a slightly different note, its always good to see the maintenance crew/team taking water samples daily
at Dusit-land's pool. (whether they annalise these samples is another matter I guess..??)

Sandman..I agree with you..why do mom & pop shops sell fuel in bottles, soap powder in 10b sachets etc,
cos the family has run out again..if maid has no powder she not do washing,no washing,so can look at TV..
..no washing means no ironing... doo TV some more..& so it goes..ha-ha!

To quote Sandman67

You are surely not saying that this type of attitude is unique to Thai kids and do you not as a parent need to take responsibility for instilling certain values and discipline?
