Computers for children, charities and good causes in Hua Hin
Re: Computers for children, charities and good causes in Hua
Great stuff, anything that works is welcome - it can all be dropped at the HHHB shop on soi 41.

Hi Buksida
In my workshop I have a large 5 draw storage full of power supplies, many cables, both internal and usb + others. I think the network switch you require is out there and several other things such as a usb cam, usb2 card for laptop and mice wired and wireless. I can also swop out the qty 2 Thai keyboards I am using at the moment for old ones in storage.
This stuff has accumulated over many years and I consider it "usefull" and might come in handy in the future, (although some of it has not been in use for years) therfore not willing to dump it in 3 or 4 bin bags and give it all away. You or any one else who you nominate are welcome to rumage through and I'm sure you will find stuff you could make good use of. pm me if you wish.

Thanks for the offer, we have a ton of cables but the PSUs, keyboards and mice will always come in handy (if they're in working order) and of course the network switch.
If you're happy to part with them they can be dropped at the HHHB shop.
Thanks again.
I've noticed a thread about another Children's Home up near Pala-U, if computers are needed there please post and let us know and we can start building one.

hi, yes, i am the original 'post-er' of the info on the Home in the Pala'u area (actually just past Padang). In our new girl's dorm/library, we are also putting in a computer room to help the kids learn the skills and do some of their homework, so we can use any working computers and supplies for sure. The computer room would comfortably hold 4 computers, so any and all hardware associated with us setting up the room is greatly appreciated. We travel to the Home regularly, so as people supply the parts and you put them together, we can pick them up and take them out (and would welcome you to go with us and see the Home and kids anytime you like).
Thanks for your interest and generous heart...

A big thanks to georgy and chaspul for your donations and efforts.
Will start on a new machine for the Pala-U home and use the network bits along with the proceeds from the Mercy House sponsored web page to get them connected up.

In the meantime I got my stuff moved to HH, please let me know if you need small items like screws, cables etc.
The router (non-wireless) will be brought to the shop within the next days.
@ BUKSIDA:
Please PM your email adress, so that I can email the manual to you. Its in chinese and I added some explanations in english, shouldn't be a problem to get that thing working.

Thanks for the offers georgy and apologies for the late reply.
Cables, screws and manuals not necessary, we have plenty and routers are all pretty straight forward.
Will be collecting the next batch of hardware from HHHB shortly to see what we have to work with.

The project has been revived following the latest hardware collection!
We should have two functioning machines shortly - our problem now is that we have no monitors so if anyone has working screens please drop them off. Maybe you want to upgrade to an LCD/LED screen from that old box you're using? If it works donate it!
We also have a VCR and a couple of DVD players so they can go too. Maybe the next batch can go to the school up at Pala-U?

Re: Computers for children, charities and good causes in Hua
I have a 2.8 Ghz P4 system I built with spare parts. It is lacking a keyboard, mouse and monitor. Do you know anybody who'd be interested in picking it up? (I live in central Hua Hin.) I've been trying to find a new home for the system.
Back in Pattaya, I have a condo where I have a couple motherboards, a processor (Core2Duo E6750, 2.66Ghz) and various RAM sticks (desktop & notebook, DDR2 & DDR3) stashed in a cupboard that I could bring back to Hua Hin on a future trip.
I also have an Acer Pentium-M 2Ghz notebook that has seen better days. Rubber feet on the bottom missing, finish worn off the plastic case in places, etc. I have the original recovery CD's as well. Does that have potential for a new home?

Providing it works you can leave it at the HH Ham & Bacon shop on soi 41, same goes for the laptop (providing it works and you have the power adapter).
Update
Thanks to all those that have donated working components and machines, we have been very busy lately so the project has been put on hold temporarily, it will be resumed when time permits. Please note that we do not need broken or malfunctioning hardware such as printers with no ink or power adapters, the cost of replacement cartridges often equals that of a new printer. Computers over 5 years old are also more hassle that they're worth, simply moving them around often causes hardware failures. If its busted bin it!
