Thai sim cards for mobile internet connection
Thai sim cards for mobile internet connection
I have a vodafone connect card which I intend to use to connect my laptop to the internet in Hua Hin. Which is the best phone provider to use for coverage, reliability, price, convenience etc.?
Thanks in advance,
Jaime

Hi Jamie.
I have used my Vodafone connect card out here for the last 2 years with no problem, sometimes it is even faster than the ADSL.
I use 1-2-call as it is really cheap, about 2bht per min.
In the UK my bills were huge due to them charging me per megabyte of download and of course the dreaded monthly charge.
Mike.

jamie
i used dtac
it was slow but aint all the connections in thailand
i paid 600 baht a month for the first three months then 1200 after that i understand it is around 900 now not sure if you will get 3 months half price
you do have to connect in a thai name but it is not a 12 month contract cancel and reconnect as you wish
i used to leave the pc on almost 24/7 and the connection never/very rairly disconnected
the only complaint was the speed but the upside if you have a laptop you connect almost anywhere
chok dee

Jamie.
Go into any phone shop and buy a 1-2-call sim card.
Then contact customer services and they will give you the dial up numbers and settings.
It is a standard pay as you go sim, so no contract to worry about and as cheap as chips.
If you have any probs then contact me and you can copy the settings from my laptop.

12call
A new 12call card has 25 hours free per month. I connect my phone via the usb lead or infrared to the laptop. Make a new dial up connection no user name or password phone number to dial *99# havent had creditr on it for ages but it still connects. Card 270 odd baht.
Theres is also a 12call NET card from computer shopswhich is more expensive for norma calls but you get 50hrs free for the first month, 40 the next untill it reaches 25 per month and stays.

Despite the risk of scuppering yet another thread, you know I just have to answer that!tuktukmike wrote:What the hell is a Luddite.
Luddites: One of a group of people involved in machine-wrecking riots in northern England 1811–16. The organizer of the Luddites was referred to as General Ludd, but may not have existed. Many Luddites were hanged or transported to penal colonies, such as Australia.
The movement, which began in Nottinghamshire and spread to Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Yorkshire, was primarily a revolt against the unemployment caused by the introduction of machines in the industrial revolution.
Luddite has come to mean someone with a fear or hatred of machines or technology in general. I suppose the term today would be 'technophobe.'
Thanks for all the replies fellas. In the end I got a 1-2-call net-sim card which cost 259 baht at the mobile shop next to the UBC/AIS shop on Phetkasem on the right hand side heading North out of town. I get 40 free hours and then pay 1 baht per minute. Ideal for the month I am here.
I have been used to broadband so speed is a bit slow at 57.6 Kbps but connection is excellent and hasn't suffered any disruption for the couple of hours I've been playing around on the net.

Download Speeds
Mine connects at the same speed but I find when downloading files I only get about 5kb per second, sometimes only 2 or 3. Have you got better? I've heard theres sometimes a speed restriction lock on the sim card.

Re: Download Speeds
I am doing some work here and need to send files back to UK and receive others. As I am accessing my mail via the web I will report on upload/download speeds as and when I finish the work!Mr Jame! wrote:Mine connects at the same speed but I find when downloading files I only get about 5kb per second, sometimes only 2 or 3. Mike - I will try moving around the house to see if the speed improves!

Can any one help me
I need to check my e-mail too.
I bit lost on the best way to do this, but i know i not want to go int a internet cafe.
Sorry to say i not like them, apart from one in BKK who has one of the most helpful ladies i know.
She even lent me her Digi Cam when i lost mine.
May ideas please like that place to sort out the dial up service from a mobile?
Many Thanks

Re: Download Speeds
The download speeds I have been getting are between 2.8 and 3.12 Kbps. I don't know enough about computers to know why this should be - or even if it is the way it should be - anyone want to edikate us?Jaime wrote:I am doing some work here and need to send files back to UK and receive others.
