Wi-Fi etc. ?

Post by PeteC »

Reading the Bangkok Post daily there are many stories about "...10's of thousands of new subscribers in the next year..." for various services to be offered by True and others.

Absolutely none of their adds indicate where this service will be available, so it is assumed Bangkok ONLY.

Pattaya, as big as it has gotten, has rotten high speed service and getting a clear description of what is on offer and all other details is similar to some form of business I have never experienced before in my life....the customer begging the provider!!!!!!!!!

If any IT Gurus in LOS know any details about a country wide roll out of Wi-Fi or any other type of high speed, better than what we can get now, (which is a waste of money compared to speed). Please let us know. Thanks. Pete

Bangkok only I'm afraid unless you're willing to setup your own system.

The next place with coverage is Phuket.

If you want to have your own system, then you can buy this state of the art gadget Nera WorldPro 1000.
Weighing less than a kilogram, it is said to be the world’s smallest and lightest mobile broadband satellite terminal, marking a new milestone in data and voice communications. Utilising the Inmarsat BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) satellite services, users can have broadband capability, as well as high quality telephony, from remote locations around the world.
The Nera WorldPro 1000 uses an antenna unit that homes in on the new Inmarsat I-4 satellite. This gives the Nera WorldPro 1000 almost world-wide usability, receiving at 384 kbps and transmitting at 240 kpbs. These rates are similar to terrestrial broadband and five to six times better than the existing mobile satellite services.

Measuring 15 cm by 20 cm and weighing less than 1 kg, the terminal fits easily into the spare compartment of a computer bag or the pocket of a military uniform. Its ruggedness enables it to work equally well in a dusty desert and a humid rain forest.

It is made to endure constant travel and rough rides, temperature swings and the fast pace of field operations. It operates in temperatures from -20° Celsius to 50°Celsius and in an environment of up to 95% humidity. It can withstand a drop of half a metre onto concrete.

The Nera WorldPro 1000 is designed so that the antenna unit is detachable from the interface unit. This enables the user to work indoors with the interface unit plugged into the PC and/or handset, while the antenna unit is placed outdoors, in line of sight to the satellite. The two units can also be joined as one to keep the terminal compact for travel.

The price is "only" appx 3000$ (USD).

BKK Post today mentioned that True is establishing Wi-Fi presence in Korat now and will expand to other cities later in the year. What cities the article did not mention. I think it also said something about 40-50 km coverage which seems to be some kind of new technology. Pete

i live out near the airport , and my condo has free wi-fi for its residents.

when i open my network connections , two other systems are recognised

sunshine , and sunshine aps. both offering a very weak signal out here.

one time i did manage to connect via sunshine aps , and it asked me to log in , username and password etc which i dont have , but it gave me details of how to pay for wi fi time through an office near the tanavit hotel.

maybe the signal strength is better nearer town.

anybody else know anything about that set up.

Hello again;

By my home ranch, there is no telephone line neither internet service. I went to ask TT&T to get a line to my area but they said not for awhile. My neighbor told me that they asked for the line for the past 4 years.
Anybody knows how to get internet service out side Hua Hin. Of course Nera will cost $3000 but that with monthly service? Do I have alternative way? without having to pay by an arms and legs?
Thank you again

If you have a decent cell phone, you can use it as a modem. I did that.
Or wait until TT&T are ready to connect you. In the meantime you can use a internet cafe. (It took 6 months to get my ADSL connection from TT&T after my house was finished).

Satellite is probably your best bet, the first two pages of this thread may help:

Alternatively try their site direct:

Thank you all for informations. At least I know now that there are alternative ways to get internet service in my area. Normally I will drive 20 minutes to Hua Hin to do internet cafe and almost everyday while I am at home.
Actually internet cafe has very reasonable price in Hua Hin. Only 25 bath per hour. It will be about a same price in Bangkok but in southern of Thailand such as Krabi is very expensive (1 bath or two per minutes).
In ChaingMai is also about 1 bath per minute. But least expensive is in Northerestern such as in Ubon which is only 20 bath per hour but again the speed is alittle bite slower than what they claim is ADSL!!

Internet cafes are fine if you only need to check your Hotmail account once a week.

I would not use them if you are doing anything on a secure connection (banking etc) or you plan on doing any serious work online.
