Stay away from dealers and buy privately if you have the money and an ounce of mechanical knowledge. If not, surely you know someone who is mechanical and could give a motor the once-over for you.
The alternative is to buy brand new and get the best (? zero-interest)finance package you can, perhaps over four years to reduce the repayments, then use your capital to make a deposit and augment the interest-free repayments and enjoy the reliability and cache of a new car with minimal repair/maintenance bills ! You may be surprised to find that it's often better value to buy new, and have the reassurance of a manufacturer warranty to boot !
Happy motoring !
