I've seen here a thread about the O visa but I've started this on account of the requirements for B visas being different.
My situation is as follows:
We're in the process of employing a German guy.
He has a 3-month non-imm B issued in Laos, which expires on 7 March 2010.
His work permit will be issued within the next 7 days.
We can renew his non-imm B in Hua Hin but it's going to cost us 27k with all the different fees involved.
My question is:
Is there anywhere else we can get the non-imm B renewed for 1 year at a more reasonable price.
I've already asked in Vientiane/Laos, but they only issue non-imm B's for a maximum of 3 months.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd be very grateful.
Reviewing non-immigrant B visa
You could try the "One Stop Shop" on Rama IV Road in Bangkok, did my non-B there for a few years - cost 1,000 baht for year renewal, add 1,900 for single re-entry, and add 3,800 if you want multi-entry.
The only problem now being that they may tell you to go and do it in Hua Hin since that is where the work permit is based. If they do you could try Dan-Singkhon in Prachuab.

not 100% sure barry, but check with your lawyer, i have a feeling that work permits ae related to your visa, which means that if his visa runs out soon then the WP will also run out???? and then you will have to go through the whole process again.
maybe.
something like that.
could be a mistake.
by the time youve flown, stayed over a couple of nights, eatern, paid for the new visa blah blah blah gotta be near 20,000 there.
anyho i get mine renewed in perth. very easy. but more expensive than your HH method.

Thanks for your comment and you're absolutely right!
They are totally interdependent - whichever one expires first automatically renders the other one invalid.
We have until the end of this month if we want to renew the non-imm B in Hua Hin.
Otherwise, if we can find a cheaper option elsewhere, we just have to make sure the renewal is no later than 7 March, then both the work permit and visa will run parallel for 1 year.

Re: Reviewing non-immigrant B visa
As I understand it, if he has a Permission to Stay based on entry on a B Visa, while the Permission to Stay is still current, he can apply for a Work Permit. If approved, the Permission to Stay will then be made the for length of the Work Permi.barrys wrote:I've seen here a thread about the O visa but I've started this on account of the requirements for B visas being different.

No need to leave country.
Fees payable are just your normal Work Permit fee and Baht 1900 for Immigration stamp.
This is how it has worked for us with several employees.
The only exception to this is that we are a school and do not have to comply with the normal requirements of 4 Thais for each farang employees plus paid up capital of the comapny.
Yeah, a 3 month non immigrant visa means you can apply for a work permit at the Ministry of Labour. MoL issues a work permit on the strength that you have a job offer/paper work from the right sort of place, have a contract etc. Work permit is valid until original non immigrant visa runs out. Before it runs out you present yourself at immigration and apply for extention of stay for one year, well, 9 months if you include the 3 months issued originally in the non immigrant visa to start with. Immigration extends it to a year on the strength that you have a been issued a work permit from the MoL. You then go back to the MoL to extend the work permit to a year on the strength that you have been granted an extention from immigration to stay for the extra time.
OK, you have to pay stuff along the way but that figure of 27k appears to a be a case of extortion, not heard of that much before, but then again I haven't done it in HH, so can't be sure, sounds a bit high. Might be a case of they think you're wearing a skirt and are trying to lift it up.

Visa
Chicken and Egg, extend visa 3 months or 1 year depends on immigration, then extend WP, always keep both up to date, and if you leave the country get a re entry stamp or you go back to square one and both will expire.
but the price is 1900 baht per renewal,
As always HH lawyers making prices up as they go.

Thanks for all the comments - much appreciated.
We are aware of the formalities and pitfalls and it is our own acountant's office that wants to charge us 27k - not quite sure how much goes to who, though.
What we would like to know is whether there's a cheaper way, here or elsewhere, of getting the non-imm B visa renewed for 1 year (i.e. cheaper than 27k).
Thanks a lot for all your help.

I'm on the same Non B visa that I got in the UK about 6 years ago. As I've had a work permit (even with different companies in different provinces) it has always just been extended.
As someone mentions before the work permit and visa are linked. If the visa runs out so does the work permit and vice versa. It is my understanding that if you go to immigration with all the right docs (and it is a fat pile) then they should extend it for you and at standard cost which is not 27k. Sounds like you accountants are taking you for a ride. If however their charges include visits to the labour office in prachuab to ensure the work permit tallies as well, you are probably getting closer to the mark.
In addition, it may have something to do with rumours I've heard about the new Hua Hin immigration boss liking rather alot of tea.......
