Experiences with ADSL from True in Hua Hin
Experiences with ADSL from True in Hua Hin
Now that True is offering broadband in Hua Hin has anyone tried it yet?
I need to change provider (again) and am considering giving them a go. My experiences with other ADSL providers in Hua Hin over the last 8 years are detailed below:
1) CAT (Hinet): totally incompetent staff, frequent outages that can last for days, around 15% of the advertised speed.
2) TT&T (Maxnet): partially incompetent staff, slow service at peak times, major problems with SMTP servers and sending email.
3) TOT: need to buy a new phone line so have not used them.
4) Sunshine/CityWide (Wifi): out of catchment area so can't use it.
5) AIS (EDGE/GPRS): reliable service but too slow to use as a main provider (good for backup and when on the move).
6) iPStar (satellite): expensive, slow service, and frequent outages during poor weather.
7) True: the way forward?
Comments from those that have used it and other suggestions appreciated.

TOT is not an option as I have a TT&T phone line - areas outside of Hua Hin also seem to benefit from better service.
Was more interested in those that have tried True in Hua Hin, their packages look very good and it says the service is available in this province:

Well there is a good reason why I've had no response on this thread.
Printed a couple of pages off their website and went into the True shop on the corner of the night-market this morning. Asked them if they offer these ADSL services in Hua Hin and gave them the papers ...
> blank look, lots of hushed conferring .... "mai dai"
So I asked them about 3G and was asked where I lived (about 3km north, 500m west).
> "mai dai"
So, what you're saying is that you can only get online with True in the center of town?
> ...... smile.
So it looks like I have no choice but to go back with TT&T/Maxnet/3BB or whatever the hell they're calling it these days and suffer substandard service, blocked and bouncing emails, and gibbons on tech support.

Buksi, what type of connection are True 'supposedly' advertising for Hua Hin ? installing a fixed line or just via their Huawei USB modems ? I'm using TrueMove's 3G on my mobile and have seen their Huawei modems for sale for around 2,800 Baht I think.
Their 3G coverage map is on the link below, looks like it covers your area but can't quite remember exactly your location: http://www.truemove.com/en/05_service_3g_3_cha_um.html

I enquired specifically about the permanent hard-wired ADSL connection as their website claims Prachuab is covered.
Wasn't really keen on shelling out 3k for a dongle when I'm only going to get EDGE speeds as I can already get that from my mobile. The shop assistant seemed adamant that I could not use 3G where my house is ... which is along the canal road. I'd definitely have to try it first here but I don't think that's an option, fancy bringing yours round for a test run one day?
If it is ripspeed as you say I'd happily go for it - anything has to be better than Tards Tossers & Twats again.

Buksi, I live much further from the centre than you do and have a good 3G connection using a router with AIS. (I'm in Samorprong next to Highland Seaview) Maybe have to investigate Truemove as costs 999 baht with AIS for 2Gb and in one day, I used up over 1Gb. Think Truemove maybe have better deals. Supplement my 3G with both edge/grps AIS and DTAC, whichever one I can get to work.
Had the same experience as you in Truemove shop. lots of blank looks and it appears there is no training done to staff.
'Just start on Monday, cousin, and pick it up as you go along. If you don't know, just say No, cannot do.'
Happy to bring my laptop and router down to your house, if you want.

That sounds grand, I can then test the connectivity, download/upload speeds, SMTP servers and email and a few other things. I'd need a package without a data limit though!Ken wrote: Happy to bring my laptop and router down to your house, if you want.
Not much hope for True if their staff don't even know what the product is!

Buksi,
I'll try it when next over your way and let you know what it's like and if it seems any good you can try it out, but I've only got it on iPhone so you'd have to connect via this 'tethering' business. But I'm finding that if you're anywhere around the borderline of their reception then it drifts in and out. Just got it to work at home around the top of Soi 94 with iPhone tethering, it worked fine one minute then not the next!? But when I'm closer to the beach more it's fast and consistent all the time.
Ken, Somorprong seems well covered judging by their map, it seems to a case of being close to the beach rather than the centre of Hua Hin town, it goes all the way up to Cha Am with inland 'bubbles' along the way. There's an interactive google earth coverage map linked in my last post.

With regards the 'data limit', the AIS Super 3G for use with USB modems, offered monthly transfer data packages upto 30GB on the brochure I saw.
My thoughts on 3G in the area so far is it's great and reliable when you're on or inside the Petchakasem Road, but start to stray West of that and it becomes a bit hit and miss.

Thanks for map SJ, looks like I am a lucky 'boy in a bubble'. Not so sure about you, buksi, but we'll check it out anyay.
Unfortunately AIS no longer offering the good deals they did from the start. They had a special promotion of 30 Gb for 1,500 Baht. Damn, that would have been perfect.
When I bought my router last week, girl in Telewiz didn't know what the package was and could only show me an out of date price list. She thought there might not be any change and but having spoken to a helpful AIS Call Centre lady tonight, it transpires it has reduced in value but still ok at:-
Cost of router 5,400 baht.
5 Gb free for first month
Then 499 baht per month for 5 Gb for next 11 months
Then, if you use up your monthly 5Gb you either purchase more or if you do nothing, they charge you 2 baht per Meg, or put simply 2,048 baht per Gb.................ouch!
Various packages for AIS sim only but maximum is 10GB for 1,799. You need a fairly modern phone, router or dongle for best results.
Not sure about VAT.
Will check out Truemove prics when down town next.
DTAC don't do 3G and when licences finally awarded who knows who will still have what, but I live for today. Tomorrow I diet.

I don't think 3G will be suitable, due to my line of work (permanently online) pricing on a data transfer basis rather than a time one will cost me a fortune!
Its such a same True doesn't offer ADSL here, oh well, off to TT&T tomorrow.

Anyone located close to, or East of, the Petchakasem Road should have a serious look at TrueMove's 3G service. These are the typical speed's you can get via their mobile phone service around Soi 80 on the Petchakasem Rd. Not sure how much these results are mis-representitive as tested against a Bangkok server, as only Asian servers appear on the list on my mobile's version of 'speedtest.net' ...
. .
As reported in the posts above, once you start going further West then the service becomes hit and miss and may not be viable as Buksi reported. Although just got this from True's 3G about 2km's down Soi 94 ...

But then when I 'tether' the 3G mobile phone to my laptop via USB, the results are less than halved, any particular technical reason for this ?
