Thanks for everyone's offers of help. The dry dog food was received today, Rider - much appreciated!
JD, thanks for the offer of paying for the boxes - that would be a huge help. I know you have to speculate to accumulate, but it helps to have the funds to speculate!!
I'll be in touch with a pm, Buksida. It's probably something simple (I hope) but some days it's all I can manage to manoeuvre the basic programmes like Word - all else is beyond me!
Mmm, charity status would be great. It's not easy to become a charity here, though, esp as a farang run non-profit organisation. There is only one farang run dog foundation in Thailand (in Phuket) and that only achieved foundation status about a month ago. I believe the Koh Samui one may be a charity - but most of us (and there are quite a few) are plain "not-for-profits" That's why we're now trying for foundation status, as it may be achievable and also lends that respectability, as well as the other obvious benefits.

Dogs! a call to alms

Post by Willow »

This is going so much better than i ever imagined. great bunch of people here.
Playboy: the charity store is on the third floor of the Hua Hin Shopping Mall. Staff is still needed in order to keep it open. Can anyone spare four hours of their day to help out? there are lots of good books to read; and you might find a treasure to buy.
as for mailing the needed items, i see the address has been posted. they do not weigh much, so it should be fairly inexpensive.
Update on the worse dog in our area: we are still trying to capture him. whenever my son or i pass thru kao takiab, we look for him. we are having a difficult time coordinating with Maureen to meet us there. We have to find him and stay with him until she can arrive by taxi. She cannot drop everything and come out to get him, we only have a motor bike at this time. any volunteers to help with this? i know it is a lot to ask, but, if you see this dog, you will understand how the poor creature needs to be taken off the street and treated. he is in horrible shape.
looking forward to getting more donation boxes, i have more places to put them.
People are more giving during the holidays. :P

Just wondered how things had gone over Christmas and if any progress on this. Don't want it to fall off the radar!

Sorry, first time I've managed to get online for a while. Well, things are getting busier. Now, only my Mum & I are working at the center (and a couple of Thai paid workers). For one reason or another, we have no volunteers at the moment, so everything is on us at the mo. Due to the same lack of volunteers, we are only able to open the shop sporadically, so apologies to anyone that has gone there, only to find it closed.
Had two more cases of distemper in my home (one was misdiagnosed as a cold, during the first outbreak), so had to put two lovely pups to sleep in the last two days & I'm in quarantine again. This means poor Mum deals with all the dogs, apart from the ones in my home. If we have no further cases, I can go back to work properly in 2 weeks. So, if you don't hear anything for a few days, it's because things are so hectic.
Anyway, hope everyone had a lovely Christmas & New Year. And would love to put a box in Johnnie Walkers, JW, thanks. Just need to get some made!! Not a problem for your staff? Sometimes the girls (justifiably) feel unhappy that possible tips are going in a charity box. But I'm more than happy to put one wherever it's wanted. Thanks

Dogs! a call to alms

Post by Willow »

Hello All and Happy New Year. This should be The Year of the Dog, here in Hua Hin.
As I read dawn's last post, I see she is not outwardly asking for help, but it is implied. She and her Mum are overwhelmed right now.
Can anyone spare a few hours a week to help at the center or at the shop?? Can anyone take a dog or two and nurse them back to health?
I learned a valuable lesson last week about distemper. My son brought a pup home, whose every bone was visible. He was so weak, he could barely stand up. We thought we could get some food and water in him and slowly bring him back to health. He was absolutely pitiful. We named him Wat. ( he was found by a monastery)
He had a runny nose and eyes and a bad cough. I called Dawn and she said it was either a cold or distemper and that a vet could do a simple blood test. As it turned out, poor Wat had a temp of 104 and did indeed have distemper. he had to be put down immediately. So sad, but he was suffering and had no chance to recover. Luckily, we had him in a separate part of our yard, away from our healthy dog. The remains of the disease can last in a yard up to 2 weeks; so if you have this happen, keep the area closed off from other dogs.
Aloha

Dogs! a call to alms

I read in todays Bangkok Post about the PETA group in Italy. They are working with local police (who are not too keen on helping them, imagine that) to curb cruelty to animals. The police are supposed to give out fines or be able to confiscate abused animals on the spot.
They are authorised to take animals who are locked in cars; used for begging purposes (most are drugged to make them lie still); chained up in the heat or cold; wearing shock collars, etc. :guns:

Hi Dawn

I never received details of the UK bank from you. I am currently in HH and would like to make a donation. Not sure that i will get to the shopping mall. Can you tell me where i can find one of your donation boxes.

Thanks

Sorry Knocker, my fault. Just been overwhelmed with work. We've 120 dogs now & only Mum & I looking after them. Plus I had a distemper outbreak in my house over New Year & quite a few deaths. Very behind on emails!
OK, boxes - there are quite a few around, but I'll tell you a few in the centre of HH, as I assume that will be easier for you. Apart from our shop (3rd Fl, Shopping Mall) there's a box in Western Tours (Damnoen Kasem Rd), Ken Diamond Tours (Naresdamri Rd, nr Hilton) All in Hua Hin Info Bistro (behind Shopping Mall) & Asia Property (Opposite Sofitel). If you golf, there is also a box in the shop at Palm Hills. More should be going out soon, as David from Hua Hin Ham Bacon & Meat Co (they have one too) has had more made for us, I just need to go & get them (oh, & get some more pictures to him - forgot!)
Thanks for thinking of us. :thumb:

I AM NOT A MAN!!! :guns: I am in the photo next to Dawn, Blue shirt.

Good time at Johnnie Walker's. Nice to put faces with names. The food was good and the beer flowed like water. Generous people all.
Dawn and Maureen, you are treasures.
I will be leaving Hua Hin March 2nd, but I will still be nagging you from afar to help the dog rescue mission.
Going back to my little grass shack in Hawaii.
Aloha,
