Satelite Broadband Internet

Post by peterjon »

I have recently moved to a new village area in Hua Hin that does not have telephone lines yet.
We have had installed IPSTAR Satelite Broadband Internet.
The installation was very efficient and professional and the service and back up is next to none!
It is not up to 1 meg as I was used to, living in Spain, but comes very close as there is little mass user problems taken up by an over subscribed service. If anyone is interested I can supply full details.
Well Done technology!

Can you please tell us what the costs are?
Installation + monthly fee.
This is quite interesting and more info would be appreciated.

There is a special promotion, at present, with No installation cost but only the 2,500bht monthly subscription.
Star Express 1 256/128 (84cm dish) 1 email account. The dish and installation was completed very professionally within 1 week of completeing the application form and paying in 2,500 bht to the bank.

I was given some brochures by the installtion team if you want to know I can arrange to meet and give it to you as I am in the city most days.

Thank you peterjon.
Maybe we should scan the brochures and post it on HHAD?
What do you say Buksida?

What and put more money in Taksins pocket ... not likely!

I was under the impression that satellite connections had limited bandwidth. Is this the case with yours Peter?

I am not sure about the bandwidth limit but in my situation it is my only alternative so I have to go with it until I can get something that proves to be better,i have not found anything bettter yet, I have tried many DSL services!

Oh I dont doubt the speed of it, I have also tried it and performance was good.

As said the only limitation would be a limit on the bandwidth you use and once exceeded you get charged per Megabyte, so not good for heavy users like myself! It'll be in the small print somewhere.

Buksida, Mr Thaksin and family recently sold all their shares in AIS to a Singapore investment group. Doesen't this include the satellite as well?

Sorry Guys, I did not post to get involved in Politics!

I have checked with Loxinfo, the Satelite Broadband Provider, and they assure me that there is NO bandwidth limit.I can upload and download as much data as I wish every month for my 2,500Bht.

Sounds like a good alternative to ADSL then, especially for those who are out of the catchment area.

Why don't you post a few speedtest results, I'm sure performance is better than ADSL too as there will be fewer subscribers.

Heavy rain has an effect on Satelite reception. Whether this is water getting around the LNB or the atmosphere itself I do not know.

DSL over satelite uses similar technology to TV although I believ UBC may use analogue still but I am not sure and that is information that you will not get from UBC dealer. If its DSL we are talking about it has to be digital.

As for bandwidth, one posting mentions 1MBps, one mentions 256kps and another no limit at all (which is impossible).

Which is it? Are are we getting bandwidth and data volumes confused.

I have heard the rumour that Khun T has sold some AIS shares and is intending to use the money to improve schools and hospitals, enforce driving regulations, improve the railway system, give driving lessons to bus drivers, knock down the illegal beach buildings here and in Pattaya and allow farangs who work for free to keep Thai families without having the hassle of taking their life in their hands making the quarterly pilgrimage to Myanmar.

I have also heard of plans to migrate students of hairdressing, massage and street vending to other courses sucha basic computing, operation of TVs so as they do not have to sit down all day and watch Thai soap, adding up bills so that they match what the customer has actually ordered and recieved and advanced courses in English for the more mature students that have already mastered "Hello welcome handsome man, come inside, have some dink please".

Of course like all rumours, none of this could be true and Khun T maybe just going to put the proceeds in his pocket.

To clarify the difference between bandwidth and data transfer speed:

Bandwidth, in internet terms, is usually refered to as the amount of data that can be passed along a communications channel in a given period of time. This website, for example, has a 20 Gigabyte bandwidth limit per month so when visitors collectively download more than that we get charged an additional per-Gigabyte fee. Many satellite ISP's also do this with internet access so when the user exceeds their "bandwidth" they get charged extra per Megabyte downloaded.

Transfer speed is calculated using file size and time taken to download/upload to determine speed, usually measured in bits per second. So for example a 1 Megabyte file downloaded in around 32 seconds would give a transfer speed of 256Kbps. These are what ISP's use to determine the speed of your connection. They are usually a theoretical maximum that you can very rarely achieve ... especially on Hua Hin phone cables.

And after that I need a beer.

Here's my results using the speed test Buksida provided.

DSL-Compax from TT&T (512 kb).

Communications 373,2 kilobits per second
Storage 45,6 kilobytes per second
1 MB file download 22,5 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad

The result is not impressive, but what can you expect?
