Terry, my children will be attending on Saturday the 15th BUT do not attend Somtawin School any longer, so I hope onlookers that may go along to the fishing lodge will not tar my two with the same brush!!
By the way Terry, as per your request to be kept informed as to up and coming events, we have a great night planned for the 22nd of Aug if you’re still in HH. Lee Shamrock from the Dubliner, Bangkok.

Hi Bill
I was informed by Terry of Somtawin PTA that some of the kids would be from the 'homeschool' - so I guess he was referring to yours + !
Anyway - unfortunately I will not be there this time (Mrs.T will be running the show) - as I am stuck in Smelly Delhi for a while. This means that I will be missing Lee Shamrock - of whom I've heard nothing but good reports.
Hope to catch up when I get back.

SOMTAWIN SCHOOL FISHING MATCH SATURDAY 15th AUGUST
Here are just SOME of the photos that I have received.
It seems that there were 17 young anglers + 4 observers - a good turn out.
Unfortunately I don't know who won what - (I was not there) - so maybe someone can enlighten us.
Anyway it seems it was a day for the Pla Suwai (Striped Catfish) + some Pacu and a nice young Giant Siamese Carp.

Young lady with a young Giant Siamese Carp

Pla Suwai from a handsome young man

Lunch - being supervised by a local celebrity mum!

Another Suwai caught by one of the regulars!

Happy lad with yet another Suwai

Son of celebrity mum 'barefoot in the park'
- yep with another Suwai

Another Suwai creating some interest.

A serious looking young man with a Pacu
Congrats to all who took part

I'm trying to to get a friend down to HH at Christmas, He's a keen fisherman, then pay your place a visit Terry.Terry wrote: Stunning fish - air breather - often rises to the surface to shock everyone
He spends his time on the other side of the Gulf in Koh Kud.
An air breather?
Am I stupid or am I missing something?

Hi Terry,
Just a quick question from those that might not know, sure the locals know the answer, really great pics with the kids etc but do people/the kids get to keep the fish they catch or do the have to put them back or what is the deal? If it's a rare fish then do people have to put them back etc, is there rules on what you can keep etc. I've never been to your lodge but would be interested to know how it works and I'm sure others that are not regulars that would like to know too. Sorry if this question seems rhetorical but could you give a quick "heads up" for those that are new or unfamiliar with the general rules of the lodge.
Sometimes it seems to me, someone that has never been to your lodge but would like to go when in HH, that there are many rare/big fish there as well. What happens to the fish in the picture posted in the last post etc.
Could you quickly give me, and others, a "heads up", vague parameters post.
This thread is too long to read it all.
Thanks.

I asked that question early on in the thread and I think the answer was that it is mostly (if not all) catch and release as many of the fish are endangered species that you can't even fish for most places.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Arapaima are "air breathers" in that they do not have fully developed gills as per other fish. Hence they frequently visit the surface, gulp some air and then go back down to the depths.
In doing so they make a distinctive 'popping' noise and often roll over - displaying the stunning colours of their dorsal fin.
Sometimes a jump out of the water is included - and at this size, a big splash follows.
If you have never seen them before they are simply quite stunning - and it should be remembered that these fish can reach 200kg +.
So 'Arry is still a nipper

My staff have been instructed to ensure that fish are photographed at ground level. Simply to prevent dropping (Some are bloody slippery), and to prevent unwanted piscal headaches and damage. In fact - someone is in for a bollocking for even bring THIS fish out of the pond, since although being an air breather it will not die of 'fish suffocation', the internal organs of this species could be damaged by such action. The rule is - if you want your photo taken with this fish - then you get in the water with it!
My staff can facilitate.

General rules regarding the 'keeping' of fish
HHFL is run on a catch and release basis - i.e. the fish get put back. This is generally because many of the fish are now valuable or indeed rare.
Endangered species according to the WWF are
Giant Mekong Catfish - we have to 60kg
Giant Siamese Carp - now to 15kg
Clown Knifefish - now to 3kg
Julliens Golden Carp - now to 8kg
All of which are almost impossible to find in the wild these days.
Others that we have are of course not found in the wild in Thailand - such as the Arapaima and Red Tail Catfish and these are expensive to acquire.
Check out 'The Fish' on the website
We DO allow customers to keep up to 2 kg of the Pla Nin (Tilapia) if they wish. We will also sell at market price + THB 5 / kg any quantity of Nin above 2kg + Pacu, Rohu, Pla Duk, and Tab Tim.
Hope this explains things - more details can be found on the website - linked from here.
