If the manager of the Cineplex had any sense he would offer one of his cinemas one day a week to a Farang "film club". The "film club" members could choose which films they wanted to watch and help advertise the events.

But it doesn't seem the manager has the ability to think up something as progressive as this. Perhaps AWOL could suggest this or something like it?

Harry Potter is pure crappy. No point in screening crappy films in original soundtrack.

You'll soon be rivalling sandman as forum film expert/reviewer with such informative, in-depth reviews.

I don't think you couldn't better SD67 film reviews, always top notch IMHO. JoeDoc will have to try much much harder.

BaaBaa, I agree with him though. I've never been a fan of the Potter movies but my wife has been wanting me to take her to the movies since they opened and I didn't fancy a Thai language movie, so for her and to show support for English language films, I took her today.

The movie is not very good unless you are a HP fan and it is way too long, especially with the 30 minutes of commercials starting at the advertised show time. There were about 20 people in the theater but the Thai language movie that started before ours (while we were sitting on the benches outside) didn't have any more patrons than that either.

The ads (in English) showed a few coming attractions that looked good if the movies are shown with the original sound track.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I didn't say I don't agree either, I've only seen the first one on TV, it was entertaining enough.

That's not my point, I'm just suggesting Harry Potter was a logical choice to be shown with an English soundtrack as it's one of the years biggest blockbusters.

Anyway it's a start.

The new Sawasdee Hua Hin Magazine has a Page 1, full colour advert for Major Cineplex, Hua Hin Market Village.

It lists seven movies, all English Language with descriptions of each, all in English.

They have a direct line for information which is 032-526-204.

I contacted the Head Office in Bangkok, via e-mail, two weeks ago when I first saw this advert. I asked why do they not show movies in original (English) soundtrack when they place full page colour adverts in English language magazines advertising those films. As yet I have had no reply.Image

By the way the cost for that advert is 45,000 Baht for a three months contract. Seems a waste of money if they don't show the movies in English, a point I made quite strongly in my email to them.

Incredible!

Post by Chas »

JD That is just incredible!

That they actually spend that amount of money . .. in low season yet . . on a full page ad in English and obviously aimed at farangs, for movies which are due to be shown dubbed into Thai!!

What are they thinking? That English-speaking people wont be a bit disappointed to find themselves sitting in theatre watching a Thai language dubbed movie?

Well, it certainly shows you the level of intelligence at work here.

Reminds me of another brilliant ploy a few years ago . .Stamford ( International at that time) placed a half page ad in the Bangkok Post . .entirely in Thai. ( Hello?)

last night/ update

Post by Chas »

Went to the 5:10 showing of Harry Potter last night ( Monday night) about a dozen people in attendance. ( Loooong movie with lots of mysterious teenage love triangle stuff going on . .special effects were the high spot for me!)

Had a second thought on that full page ad . . .maybe this marks the beginning of an effort to include soundtrack movies in the Hua Hin lineup. Let's wait and see . .stranger things have happened.

BTW Since this is MY local, hometown movie theatre . .and the only one in town. . .I have a perfect right to express my opinions about management and movie selection. As a movie patron, I pay exactly what everyone else pays for a ticket . ..regardless of nationality and that gives me exactly the same right to praise or criticize whatever I feel moved to praise or criticize . .including management's total disinterest in my patronage.

We all have a right to criticize if we wish, but do you really feel your accusations/comments, quoted below, on this thread are fair and justified ?

I hope they do not read these comments.

I hope they do!

My comment about the brother-in law was a reasonable attempt, based on Thai norms, to try to explain why they are doing what they are doing.

Note that in one of the previous posts here when Kitechick requested an explanation, the management responded:
There are some reasons for not having English soundtrack movies at Huahin. I apologize for that.
OK . .You think of possible reasons that they might want to keep secret and not want to share with a bunch of potential farang customers. (AWOL posted possibilities too.)

And my comment . . .on the level of intelligence at work. . . pales in comparison to a few others here! ( And if you want to split hairs, it could refer to any level at all!)

As well, faced with second thoughts on that full-paged ad, I concluded that they might be planning just the changes that AWOL and a few of us have been encouraging.

Lets wait and see. :D

I did comment on it about 7 posts into this thread. I do not think it neccessary or justified though to make assumptions such as yours about other's business operations: "That, or kickbacks from the distribution company"

That makes it ok then, if others have done it :?

I won't post anymore on this as do not want to disrupt the thread and the good work AWOL are doing with the petition. Apologies, just felt it needed saying as do not believe these kind of comments will help get the management on our side.

I just had a conversation by phone to the GM. He speaks very good English.

It first started out as not so good when he said " the movies are for Thai entertainment for the Thai people"

But it got softer from there. some of these things I know to be true because I worked for Century movies complex in the US for 2 years.

The movie theaters don't own or have rights to the movies.. They are rented.
Some movies DEMAND a certain amount garrentee to lease that movie to the theaters on a first run basees.

He said he has know guarentee of how many people would come if he did show it.

I came back with, If they dont advertise they have it in English people dont know.

He said that they had but it was only on the LCD screens above the box office.

I also pointed out that I was in line to see if they had an English version and they people in front of me were told NO all 3 were in Thai with no subtitles.

This happend once before when National Treasure was playing.

I saw some farangs leaving a theater and ask and was told yes they did have an English version.

In the end he said he would try and get a copy of GI joe in before it was through but the show times would be limited.

Well I tried.

anyone wanting his number if you PM me I'll give it out.

the more people that call (and talk nicely) the more weight we have.

I also signed the pertition

sorry for the bad spelling

If you really didn't want to know the answer, why the hell did you ask me the question!!!

Congrats fotoguy! You have achieved what nobody else seems to have been able to so far. Way to go! ( Interesting first comment though. . .!)

Curious about a couple of things: I always figured that they rented the movies and I wonder the rental cost difference ( if any) between soundtrack and dubbed. Maybe one is vastly more expensive that the other?))

I dont buy the guarantee thing at all though. (Big city markets/ distributors seem to have bidding wars for the latest flicks but this is one complex in one town . .who else is going to compete here to show anything?)

And from what I have observed over the years . .this is not a very successful operation on any level to begin with. When has anyone ever seen more than 30 people at any showing of anything? (Including Thai movies) . . .VERY rare.

It is also curious that Transformers ran in all four theatres. . ..none of them sold out at least when I was there. ( They guaranteed sales for all four rental copies??)Whats up with that ploy?

Anyway, Bravo for trying!! Lets see if the AWOL survey goes anywhere.
