Steve - all methods mentioned in your post will work

Most Carp & 'softlip' successes are on bread bait either on the bottom or under float.

The predators (Arapiama, Amazon Redtail, Gar, Pacu & others) like their 'flesh' - so chicken, prawn, & fish normally succeed.

Yesterday saw the Cohor record at HHFL beaten again by this 13.5kg specimen taken from the bottom pond.

This was the 5th visit by our successful customer who also took 3 more cohor at 8.5, 9.0 and 9.9kg. Not satisfied with that, he also got a 11.5kg Redtail and a good Yeesok Thai. A good day's fishing.

Just got back to Oz from Thaialnd.

Have to say that's a fantastic place you got there. Totally relaxed. Different atmosphere to most Thai fishing parks. I'm back in a month and already looking forward to a day's fishing. :P

Keep up the good work :thumb:

Steve

The species you are after (especially the redtail & tiger) are all in the bottom pond and will take chicken, fish, prawn - either on the bottom or under float. The Gar are a lot more 'lazy' and difficult to entice.

It all depends on their mood, the weather, the time of day, how much they've had the night before, if there's an 'R' in the month, if the missus is nagging or if they are not sleeping

Apart from that it's easy!

BTW - love the avatar - we don't seem to have that variety of pangasius at our place

You need to be careful with that kendo. I'm just doing my son's insurance for him to travel to Japan to compete in the Karate World Championships. I was looking at the categories for dangerous sports, which require additional insurance cover. Sure enough, angling features in the lowest risk category.
LOW - angling, aerobics, archery, badminton, basketball, billiards,
bowls, bridge, camping, caravaning, croquet, curling, dancing, darts,
golf, gymnastics, handball, jogging, korfball, keep fit, model aircraft
flying, netball, petanque, pool, quoits, racketball, rambling, rowing,
snooker, snorkelling, soft ball, stoopball, swimming, table tennis, tennis,
tenpin bowling, volleyball, waterpolo, yoga.
If she gets hold of one of Terry's monsters, and comes second, you could well find yourself out of pocket :D

It shocked me - the insurance companies have got it well sewn up.

Kendo

I've sent a pm re my dates at the lodge. :thumb:

Your missus may find a couple of specimens exceeding her own weight in our lower pond. There are others in there that could seriously drag her around for a while - would be good to meet you both there.

B.B.

I think maybe the Insurance adjusters might want to re assess fishing wrt what is available here in Thailand. Some of the monsters here are not only capable of providing injury during their capture (Sprained wrists and aching backs come to mind) - but also when you've got them on the bank aftterwards

The two photos below were taken when the specimens were young - they are much bigger now and could inflict nasty bites if not treated with respect.

My staff are well trained in handling them and retrieving hooks - which can be a finger diminishing exercise if not done correctly! 8)

As you can see from these photos - a little bit of respect (& maybe insurance?) is called for

1.8kg end of May 2008
10.3kg Early July 2009

That's around 0.6kg / month!

Wouldn't want to be a Pla Nin in my ponds!

Looks like a pike.

Are there any Thai equivalents to course fish found in the UK such as bream, roach and tench? I know there are carp.

Malcolm

Yes the Gar do look a little like the Pike.

They are NOT Thai and originate mainly in the Mississippi Basin and Florida.

No real equivalents to Roach or Tench but the Java Barb could pass for Bream

Latest today

A young man who said that he had been fishing in the UK, some 15 or so times and NEVER caught anything.

Today he came to us and caught the tiddler below

A small 36 kg Giant Mekong Catfish (Pla Beuk)

He's now got some good bragging rights amongst his mates
