Wazzer - if you are wanting to contact one of the DWP offices in the UK you can PM me with the details. I can probably get a regular phone number for the department you need. Wouldn't be able to pass you the info until Wednesday though at the earliest.

There should be a special number for overseas callers on your bank/credit card info leaflet.

Most if not all of mine also list a website where you can go to activate it on-line, but you have to have security questions already registered from the prior card. Pete

Piggybacking on this thread.
I've got to call good old British Gas later today regarding a new rental and safety check on my property. The only number I've got from years ago is a 0845 one. What does that mean? Is it a premium rate line? A free line?
I'll use my wife's mobile with 009 44 (0)845xxxxx, but I'd like to know what sort of connection it is first.
Can anyone advise?

As far as understand it, you pay normal call charges for 0845 numbers, it's what they call a non-geographic number which is assigned to a company so they can route it to call centres or wherever they want.
It should cost the same as calling a UK landline.

Probably no good for the original question but if you use a mobile in the UK it is unlikely that an 0800 call in included in any "free" minutes on your contract and you may get charged over and above any monthly fee. One way around this is to call 01243590800, you will then be asked to enter the number you require, as the original is a " geograghic" number it will be included in your "free" call allowance.

0845 numbers are not always cheap calls, especially if not using BT!

Caused a storm here in the UK a while back, when the UK Govt. (bless 'em) started using them for emergtency responses to incidents, when folk wanted info about loved ones and the like, that may have been caught up in incidents here or abroad.

Usually even more expensive if using a mobile....
