hua hin to koh samui

please the best option in transport to koh samui from hua hin.also if possible could you give me estimate price?.

Hi Hob,
I was going to ask this question a bit closer to my holiday, there is morning and early evening flights to Samui but i want to travel from Hua Hin south to Chumphon or Suratani and take a ferry or fast cat so i would like some advise or experiances too.

My Danish mate has just built a house 3km west of Chawang how far from the port.

Big drop in visitors to Koh Samui

The number of visitors to Koh Samui is down 40-50 per cent, especially foreigners, for the first six months of the year, compared to the same period last year, Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, Senee Phuwasetthavorn, said on Tuesday.

Mr Senee attributed the disappearance of tourists from the resort island to the global economic recession, the political turmoil and the swine flu pandemic.

Phanu Worramith, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Surat Thani office, took the same tone.

He said the global recession, the swine flu outbreak, the Songkran riots and the seizure of Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports late lastyear had all combined reduced number of foreigners visiting Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan by about 50 per cent.

The tourist sector was was suffering severely, he said.

However, Mr Phanu was optimistic the situation would improve in the second half of the year as the world’s economic indicators showed encouraging signs of improvement.

The TAT had joined forces with hoteliers and restaurant operators to launch an “Amazing Grand Sale” campaign offering a package tour to Koh Samui with a room rate reduction by as much as 50 per cent.

A special hotel room rate was also offered for Thai tourists to encourage them to visit the resort island instead of travelling abroad.

I'm afraid I can't help with the price, but two options are bus or train to Surat Thani. Make sure that you check the timetable (especially the bus) and book in advance. I'm not sure how arrival times link with the ferries:

Another alternative is to go by VIP bus. These can be booked in advance easily enough from a multitude of travel agents in town and the price will include the cost of the sea crossing if you want.

In 2005, We payed 8000 each 'all in' for Hua Hin to Samui, 4 nights in a resort in Chaweng , The Thai person who set it up was always on the make so he maybe got some commission out of it but then at just over £100 wasnt bad atall.

The Bus ride was ok for about 3 hours, And the road got really bad

,Stopped at the bus drivers mates about 2/3 am and payed inflated Farang prices in a roadside shop.
Got to Surat Thani about 6am, Waited in a cafe for the next bus to take us to the port, A hugely boring ferry trip of about 2+ hours and some confusion at Samui with the Taxi that was supposdly waiting for us, We got there eventually and had to walk through an active building site to get to the bungalows.

Never again will i get on the HH to Samui VIP

where as the method we went is probably the cheapest, i certainly isnt the best, Although It was all an experience though that im glad i had.

I will be staying at my mates new house, will enjoy a good look around and maybe a few music venues not really botherd about other tourists.

I was thinking take the train from Hua Hin and travel down to Chumphon and get the ferry from there, is it a fast cat or a slow ferry and is it weather permiting if it's the fast cat because moderate weather will disrupt these type of vessels.

I have never been on a train in LOS any thoughts on that i.e good service on time and do they allways get to Chumphon in time to connect with the ferry time table.

from chumpon you can take a fast cat BUT the ferry terminal is several km out of town. NO guarantee the train will get you there when you want. They do not coordinate with the cat.
If you're in HH go downtown to a travel agent and buy a ticket on the Lomprayah fast cat.
Ticket includes bus from Starbucks about 8am to Chumpon ferry terminal and minivan service when you land in Samui about 4pm.
You get off the cat and the vans are lined up, just tell the greeters your destination and they will direct you to the correct van.
All included in your ticket price, about 1200 if I remember right.

By far the most efficient and reliable services are lomprayah and seatran .If you wish to drive then you will need to go to Donsak .Time your journey well as the ferry port is 80km from the Surat Thani junction on highway 4 and the car ferries stop 7.30 pm .Holidays and weekends get there early as you may have to wait 2 or 3 hours to get a place .Those not driving the Chumporn route is better .Longer on the boat but some stunning scenery on a clear day .

I like the idea of getting the train, looking at the time table above it is just only over two hours, so what can you see when making the crossing and any idea from the ferry terminal Samui side how far up to Chawang.

Hate to piss on your fireworks regarding the train Kendo but last time I checked there wasn't a maglev connection from HH to Surat Thani .The express takes several hours from BKK to HH .If you go from Chumporn you get a nice backdrop of islands and mountains as you pull out .First stop is Nang yuan which is stunning followed by koh tao .then to phangan with the ang thong marine park in the distance and a last short leg into mae nam or bang rak .20 minutes to chaweng .

if you really want the train ride why not take it to surat thani and then overnight there. you'll see a real thai town not one catering to tourists and you'll be certain of your ferry the next day.
beware that arriving samui on your own may put you at the mercy of some of thailand's greediest taxi drivers....

Flights at present are about 2800baht each way, get transport from the airport to Victory Monument in BKK (very cheap cost from airport) and then get the minibus from the Monument to Hua Hin (about 3hrs) travel.

Cost of Minibus is about 200baht per person (dependant on how much luggage you have). If you have loads, (you may have to purchase another seat to accommodate it as there is very little space for luggage).

Other than that you can fly to BKK from Samui and get a taxi from the airport to Hua Hin which can cost between 2000-3000baht (dependent on who you choose. Cannot help with Ferry info.
