I've been using TOT free for quite a while now and whilst it's slow, the speed dosn't bother me too much. I'm not in any hurry. However, the continual disconnectios really p*** me off. My last phone bill was almost 1,300 Baht. Apparantly, I connected 365 times.
Anyway, after causing a bit of a fuss at the offices, a technician came round to the house - free - to check things out. He told me the problem was that my modem was set to 117 and their modem was set to 56. Therefore, their modem was trying too hard to keep up and disconnecting me. My modem was reset to 57 and things do seem to have improved slightly over the past week.
Is this my imagination, or a realy valid technical point?
TOT were also trying to push their ADSL connection. From what I can make out, they're supplying a free router and the following costs for internet
256/128 500 p mth
512/256 700
1,024/256 1,000
Does this sound like a good deal? I'm a computer dummy, but if I get a quick connection that saves over my phone bill, it seems worthwhile.

TOT free is only free for one reason: they make money off the phone call, so disconnecting you as often as they can is only good business practice by them. What are they going to lose, a paying internet user?
Any telephone company here will ALWAYS blame your computer before accepting responsibility themselves. However, this said, there is a little truth in what the "technician" was trying to tell you. Modems do have an optimal speed setting and if this is incorrent to will cause problems. It will slow your internet down, NOT disconnect it. To check your modem settings do the following:
Right click my computer
Click properties
Click Hardware > device manager
Expand the + next to your modem in the devices list
Right click the modem and click properties
Click the modem tab and check maximum port speed
Usually this is set to 115200 (impossible on a dialup modem). It should be set to 57600 (the actual theoretical maximum speed it can connect at).
I think this is what the engineer was doing to your computer.
As for ADSL, yes it will be a vast improvement over your dialup but I very much doubt that TOT can provide a consistent speed, 24 hours a day, for that service and at that price. Remember ADSL still uses your existing telephone line to access the internet.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who is actually using the TOT ADSL service.

refere to some of my earlier posting on the same subject go to the office see the manager and raise hell!! i did
they said it was my pc ,i was dailing out of the area, i was auto reconcting etc etc etc etc etc etc blah bla blah when at the end of the day the meter i was connected to was running at light speed ,even a local call was costing me two arms and two legs ,dont pay the bill!!!
i had a bill for 6000 thb for 1 week when the phone line was installed teh bills for bills exeeding 20+ k for two months running
I DIDNT PAY!!
check with you internet provider to actualy get an amount of times you have conected they can give you precice info on this from your user name or if you have kept your cards give them the serial number s they have this concern on many occasions they are happy to help you

ToT can not guarantee the normal phone service
Why o why pay extra for another none guaranteed service and get even more stressed out man !??!!??!!
This company is supposed to be ISO certified im sure as in the words of the admin they got it on khoa sarn rd
frankly i thing they would be more competant with two paper cups with a string inbetween them ,they would proberbly get better results and service
also i dont like being threatened with legal action when i know for a fact
the companies manager and his errand boy or whatever are talking bollocks or if you want that in thai HAMM
and no i dont bear any grudges i' m from manchester !!!!! things get SORTED !

Take an example of a 5,000 baht bill blamed solely on the internet (I choose this figure as two aquaintences have approached me with bills like this in the last 6 weeks).
Do the math, 3 baht per connection, 5,000 baht for the months bill. Your modem would need to dial the internet 55 times per day, thats once every half an hour, 24 hours a day for an entire month. I'm sure most of you don't even leave the machine on for an entire month and I'm sure you would notice the modem chirping away as it connects every 28 minutes.
The phone companies are ripping you off, it has been proven (with TOT anyway) by another member of this board that there were technical failures at their end causing the miscalculation in the bill. DO NOT PAY THEM. Investigate first and you'll more than likely find out that they (maybe not intentionally) are pulling a fast one. A virus is the first excuse the telephone company will make in its efforts to blame you. There is no virus that I have ever come across (in 15 years of work in IT) that will dial the internet at regular intervals throughout the day.
Armed with these guidelines you should be able to be online permanently with a phone bill of around 400 baht per month (provided you use one of the many unlimited access accounts available in town). CS-Lox charge by the hour and so are more expensive to buy.
