Thats quite a classic choice Randy. I got into Jazz a few years ago and my Aussie Brother in Law recommended some stuff to start with (he's a real anorak) although we also share an interest in some American stuff, apart from jazz -

Kind of Blue by Miles Davies was the obvious one and I'm listening to it as I type - ultimate chill out music and a very influential album. But Coltranes Love Supreme is pretty complex! Cannonball Adderley and Something Else is what the cover says - a great album.

I'd also recommend 'Coltrane plays the Blues' - does what it says and Art Blakey's 'Moanln', Lee Morgans 'The Sidewinder,' Sonny Clarkes 'Cool Struttin' and lastly, Joe Hendersons 'Inner Urge'

If you get through that lot, you'll be hooked! Then try some up to date euro stuff, starting with 'Suspended Night' by Tomasz Stanko - its up there with Kind of Blue - the band are very tight.

Miles Davis 'a kind of blue' was on my list but due to the fact I only buy vinyl it is harder to get hold of.
I will however no doubt bag a reissue along the way.

The Cannonball Adderly pressing is a tasty 200gm stamper and sounds as sweet as angels floating in the breeze. Autumn leaves being a real classic. The sound is so spacious, Miles could be in my front room!!

The Coltrane jobbie is as you say a bit more complex and will take some getting used to.

Others I have on my short list are - Charlie Mingus - Ah hum, Dave Brubeck - take five, Art Blakey - moanin' and of course Miles Davis - A kind of blue.

Randy, from your blog and posts you get up to town okay, have you found the specialist jazz shops up there? If so, where are they? I'm now out in the sticks but am due in town in a couple of weeks time - at a meet in New Scotland Yard no less - so intend to do some shopping whilst there.

I'm after an album called the Wonderful World of Jazz by John Lewis.

I'd seriously suggest you consider adding Coltranes blues thing to your list, I found it easier than some to relate to.

I assume your a CD man? In that case you could try Rays jazz place, you can find it in Foyles book shop in charing cross road.

If like me your a vinyl man then you are more limited. Berwick st is the place to start. Sister Ray has a good selection of jazz as does The shop next door I cant rember the name. Vinyl ......
Unfortunatly one of the top jazz shops closed a few years ago Mole jazz, such a shame.

HMV in Oxford circus (not the one by bond st) has a small section of imported jazz vinyl and a large jazz CD room all to itself.

If I think of any more i'll post them.

Thanks for that Randy - I know the main stores in OS, its where I used to have to go to get the folkie stuff I like (I have two woolies and two beards), but now order on line directly with the record companies. I'll check out Berwick St. and the place in Foyles and yes, CD it is for me. Can't fit a record player in the dash!

Going around that area always brings back memories for me, first job at 17 was working for a managing agents for half of Soho, the Sally Army, the Church and the Masons - not exactly brothers in arms! It was always fun when we got a call first thing from the Police saying thay had raided one of our properties last night, can we come and secure it!

Just spent the last few days downloading the video of Robin Trower - "Living Out of Time". It wasn't the footage I was expecting of the younger Trower with bandana but is still an excellent example of guitar playing.
He's a lot older, technique still brilliant, sounds like Jimi Hendrix in places. If you like guitar solos, this'll do.

With all this rain, it's the best of Elvis Costello with some Joe Jackson to come.
SM - was watching my download of The Peter Green Splinter Group last night. Excellent. I have just Googled the main guitarist Nigel Watson. I hadn't understood his association with early Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green before. Whatever, he's a bit good.
