Daily Activities in HH?
It's well worth a visit HH; you have to turn into the second military base on the right on the way to Cha Am.hhfarang wrote:Steve,And a visit to Rama VII's old summer palace on the way to Cha Am.
Can you give specific directions to the palace. I keep hearing about it but in all the years I've been here, I've never seen it.
You'll get stopped by the guard but they just ask where you are going and sometimes for ID.
Then drive towards the sea and you will get to the car park and entrance to the palace.
There is an entrance charge but it was only something like 20 bt.

The list was great but, you are a bit out of balance (where's Plum, when you need him).
There is nothing cerebral on the list to get your mind working and get you thinking.
How about reading, writing, studying on the internet, voluntary work. Time passes quickly when brain is in gear.
Then you are ready for nice meal and a discussion with your wife and friends.
On holiday or in retirement, you still need a bit of a timetable happening - certain days and times for functions, and week-ends a bit different etc.
Personally, I am never bored and there aren't enough hours in the day.

We visited the Palace at the end of last year and yes Men had to wear trousers but women just had to be dressed conservatively ie no short shorts etcBig Boy wrote:Be warned, men have to wear long trousers, and I seem to remember the ladies had to hire sarongs.
It is a lovely place to visit but get there early as by mid-morning it starts to get really busy with locals who like to spend the day in the grounds.
It is closed on a Wednesday

Gardening is a wonderfully pleasant daily activity if you are in a situation where you can do it. (And of course reading.)
A walk around any of the markets, including the fresh market is always interesting (and free if you dont buy anything.)
We are planning on visiting the zoo Sunday. Give you a report later.
Pala U waterfall is highly over rated IMHO. Too far ( the trip seems endless) and the times I have been . . .too crowded.
If you go to the summer palace of Rama 7 note that it is called "Mareukathaiawan" on all the signs and it has the distinction of never being spelled in English the same way twice. Check it out. Every sign leading to it and around the premises has it spelled differently. (Rama 7 was a very creative guy and it seems to have rubbed off. ) Been there dozen's of times but I dont remember having to wear long pants . .just remember getting a small cloth bag for my shoes, and you have to walk your motorcycle through the main gate.
I always liked the swimming pool at Palm Hills and IMHO it is the best in HH especially if you want to swim laps. The Sports Club itself is a beautifully designed building and worth the visit if you appreciate good architecture. But being Palm Hills, they will no doubt monstrously overcharge you for the privilege of swimming there and for any food or beverage.

You can wear proper tailored shorts but not the sports variety.Big Boy wrote:Be warned, men have to wear long trousers, and I seem to remember the ladies had to hire sarongs.
They rented a sarong to my friend and made it into those baggy trouser things that Thai men used to wear.
I wish I could post a photo because it was an entertaining sight!
Yep, they have a lot of competitions for kids up there apparently. The new owners don't use the forum which is why nothing gets posted.hhfarang wrote:Buksi, I saw the go cart track still listed on there... is that place still in business? I haven't heard anything about it lately and they used to have events advertised on the forum...
Not sure if kitesurfing has been mentioned yet but that's pretty popular here also.
Now if only there was somewhere to go diving...

They do a lot of that from Royal Varuna(sp) Yacht Club between Pattaya and Jomtien. Good observation spot is in a small cove with restaurants a bit to the south. Many times over the years I've watched riders going west at a rapid pace, only to be followed by a rescue boat a half hour later. I believe they get going and don't know how to turn back into the wind to get back to shore.STEVE G wrote:I'm getting beyond the age where I would want to be dragged across the ocean by a kite, but I see there is a lot of kite surfing going on in the area now and it's an entertaining activity to watch from the safety of a beach bar.

PS: Have you seen any arrive in HH!

That happened to me on my first rental of a catamaran in the Cayman Islands. I rented it for an hour and took it out with brief instruction. It was great fun and easy sailing away from the beach but when my hour was nearly over I found that I could only get it to go away or parallel to land. Kept fighting it trying to get closer to land for 4 hours when the owner came in a motor boat and towed me back to shore...
