I could be very cruel if I was that way inclined, not regarding Katria though, only said in jest. Katrias English is obviously above average.

The L and R speech thing I can understand (although my GF speaks Cambodian so has no ploblem with the Rs, Cambodian is full of rolling RRRRRRRRs, she doesn't speak Laos or Isaan) but writing Ls as Rs I cant understand.

I suppose it depends how you "spen" it.  :banghead:

BUT...... I cant read or write a word of Thai so I'm basically a hypocrite and a bit of an all round ass.

Baa Baa -

I hope Katria has a good sense of humor and gets the left handed apology.....

My honey has been practicing her English for over twenty years now and I can tell you it isn't any easier than us trying to learn Thai. She does a lot worse things with her writing than using inappropriate Ls.

Personally all I'm shooting for is to be able to talk to a five year old and I'm not doing very well........fughetabout writing anything.

Anyway, Katria if you're still with us Baa Baa says he'll try not to be such a smart-ass anymore, but don't bet on it.

im an old stick in the mud traditionalist....a wedding band is plain and undecorated.

I'm with you on that. My ring was purchased in walking street one night on the way to watch a Mel Gibson film.

I had searched all over Pathum Thani and BKK to no avail, then found one in Pattaya.
It was nice and light but to big and was altered while we watched the film.
It hasn't been off my finger since.

The wife would not have one for years, no matter what I tried :?

Then one day, she was in BKK and phoned me to say she had found a ring with her mother and could she buy it.

Sorry SJ but it was a Diamond ring, Baht 48,500 and she used her own money!!!

How are we meant to figure them out, when they do things like that.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

a normal size for a gold band here is 1/2 baht weight (2 selueng)

with current prices around 8000+ baht
Can this be correct? I'm wearing a plain gold band (purchased by my wife in an Udon Thani gold shop for much less, admittedly years ago) and I also have a three baht weight chain around my neck. When i look at the band and the chain it appears that I could make somewhere between 15 and 20 of my gold band from the necklace... I would have thought a plain gold band would be no more than 1/4 baht weight, even if it was a very wide one for a man?!?

Maybe it's an optical illusion. I'll check it out next time I walk past a gold shop.

Oh Don! 'How are we meant to figure them out when they do things like that' ?
Dear me - like I said, ladies choose their own baubles m'dear! Resisting the plain gold band is quite understandable IMO, as it's often the man who expects to see it worn as a sign of ownership.
Seeing the 'must have' diamond one though has tipped the balance. Needing to justify it's purchase (even with her own money bless her) has led to the excuse of using it as the much needed wedding ring!
Simples.

You know, in a pinch...like when Pau is behind you with a shotgun...the old style beer can pull tabs used to do the trick. Alas, they've stopped making them now. :P Pete

Don't start me off on gold. It's Mrs Lomu's birthday next month and I've been getting subtle and not so subtle hints for ages as to what she'd like/is demanding.
So, gold it will be but there's a budget and as I want to buy some new golf clubs and maybe go away for couple of days playing with them next month she can't get exactly what she wants.
I'm watching out for that shotgun, Pete.

Now, if you get her what she wants and tell her point blank in order to get it you postponed your golf club purchase and your trip, you will enjoy marital bliss for at least the next year. What's behind the gift will end up making her more happy than the gift itself. Tough choice Lomu, up to you. :thumb: Dr. Pete

Welcome to the forum Katria, don't worry about your English, you will get the hang of it soon. :D
It's a funny language and easy to make mistakes.
My Thai is rubbish, so I'm envious that you can speak and write Thai and English, I wish I could.

As for the different types of gold, we English tend to go for 18 carrot whilst the Thai gold is much shinier and softer 23 carrot, like my wedding ring.

Katria,

Don't worry about your English being perfect. Look at how some of us post when we've been drinking :D , or look at the difference in English between the Brits, Americans, Aussies, and Canadians... we have a hard time understanding each other sometimes in our own language.

It's good to have some Thai opinions on this forum in my view so don't be put off by your imperfect English... we'll know what you are trying to say in most cases. :thumb:
