Prepaid SIM cards
Hi,
We're coming to Hua Hin for 4 weeks next month and are looking to buy a prepaid SIM card for our mobile phones so that we can call home reasonably cheaply. Can anyone recommend a good provider - I've heard of AIS and DTAC, but what is your experience?

I use 1-2-call and get about 1 hour worth of time (to call the U.S.) for 500 Baht.
No dropped calls, lag time is ok, but I do get some static.
If you happen to have a good internet connection wherever you are staying, checkout Skype on the internet.....they are dirt-cheap and quality is usually pretty good.

I use DTAC (Happy Network) and always put 009 before the "normal" number.
For instance, for calls to UK:
Usually you would dial 0044-141-123-1234.
Using the above method, you would dial 009-44-141-123-1234
You will be suprised at how much longer your topups last using the above

The views expressed here are my own.......and bloody good they are too !!!! :)
Re: buy
Almost anywhere Den, 7-11/the local 'mum and pop shop' etc etc etc, just have to specify your preference of network operator, it's bisarrely strange how prolificly easy it is, the rates are similar.den wrote:where can i buy the pay as you go sim card from guys thanks
There is little difference between the two, just pick one of them man.

I have 2 UK contract phones that dont work on Thai sim cards so dont expect to change it and use it straight away, You might be lucky but i'd have it unlocked to any network before you go just incase.
I have one of the old splashproof builders nokias for Thailand, Its great, looks old and crappy, If it gets lost or nicked i wouldnt care, It only makes good calls. My advice, buy a cheap shite phone on ebay for a fiver, I know my new contract nokia wont see the light of day outside where im staying in HH.
With the 00944 thing, i tried to call without the 9 last time i was there, It didnt let me call the until i entered it in the number.

Yep calls to Holland with 009 also 18 baht a minute. To a landline that is, to mobile is more expensive. Do not know exactly how much but substantial.
But most of the time friends and family call me from there and dial a specific number whereafter the call aparently is routed through the internet.
Although no need to go near any computer as with Skype. Cost them less than 2 baht per minute to call me on my Thai mobile.
Quality: always in the range acceptable to excellent. Only drawback: sometimes (not very often) connection problems.
But easily solved by trying two, three times or try again 20 minutes later. Depends on traffic I guess.

We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.
Same in France. I have what's called a "triple play offer" from my internet provider : dsl, tv and phone. Phone is free of charges from France to Thailand on a land line.JimmyGreaves wrote:009 7 baht a minute to UK about 18baht to ireland, sweden etc. Suprisingly it's much cheaper from the uk to thailand 0.5 or 1pence per minute.
Thailand remains quite expensive if you call Europ regularly and, as a consequence, I use mainly Skype or, if on the road, DTAC with 009/008 prefix.

Quick-Johnny,
Here is my advice: Start by buying either a AIS 1-2-Call, or DTAC, SIM-card to get started. Then go to CAT office opposite Police station, next to Post office, and buy one of their CAT telephone cards. Dial 1544 and enter your card number and call - CHEAP! Card account charged with 100, 200, 300 baht etc. I think this could be worth it for u, staying here for 4 weeks!
