Whats your favorite street map of Bangkok & country.

Post by skippy »

I need the old paper map or book. not a GPS.

In Thai so my wife can read and direct me.

Not that she needs the map its for me.(Thought you all needed a laugh. )

English is ok but what would a falang know.

City details due to renting a hire car and have no clue how to get back to their office.

Helped before
cheers

Good luck Skippy. I think I have close to a dozen maps of Bangkok. (I am a very good map reader by the way.) and none of them bears any resemblance to what you find as you drive around Bangkok. You will swear you have the wrong city entirely ( and if you get lost, you will be swearing a lot!) A map of Cleveland ,Ohio would be as useful. Best bet forget the maps: stop and have your wife ask directions every few hundred feet.

We have found that calling the destination ( your car rental agency?) and having them guide you in works very well too. . . generally takes four to ten calls. Again this has to be in Thai.

Agree with Chas there Skippy, no such thing as an detailed street map of Bangkok, they're all useless once you get off a big road. Even Google Earth probably gets confused there.

Off topic, I know, but I brought my London A-Z over. Occasionally I look at it and it's a pretty good map.

Thanks guys i am glad i am not the only one.

As for my wife asking questions NO Fuxxxxg way (she know already).,

They just make road wrong (her words).

Is it the Thai way not to ask questions. (she not stupid)

She would sooner walk the wrong way than ask anybody. And she gets upset when i ask?

Try the Map Magic series by Think Net

Available in most good book stores in Thailand.

Have a Bangkok, Chiang Mai and all of Thailand (+others) in the series.

Each set comes with an old style paper map + CD-Rom which when loaded to your PC, gives options of Thai & English names, zooming to the area you need + then you can print out the parts you need.

Also has a search feature - but that is pretty crappy

Oh how true - but the funny thing is that when I do ask, people are always very helpful!

Slightly off topic but...A few years ago we were driving in Phuket when we found the road ahead of us closed and so had to turn off to the right - naturally there were no diversion signs so I resorted to the local map we had been given with the hire care. This map proved to be less than helpful - it told us that the part of town we were in did not exist it was only shown for purpose of the map - whatever that meant!Once the map was disposed of we found our own way back to our hotelAs for Bangkok maps, often the only buildings shown on the map are those owed by whomever is sponsoring the map.Best idea ask a taxi driver if you can follow him - but agree a price first!

I have the Thinknet Bangkok City Atlas. It's a book about 20cm by 12cm with a lot of Bangkok detail and it is bilingual.

I must have bought 20 maps of Bangkok over the years and while none of them were perfect, I think this one is the best.

Years ago, Bangchak (the local petrol station chain) published a booklet, only available at their outlets, of all the shortcuts between main roads in Bangkok. It included a main foldout map as well. Unfortunately only in Thai.

As I'm quite familiar with Bangers these days I don't need the map, but would be curious to know if there is a new version available.

Unfortunately I find all maps of Bangkok totally confusing, apart from those of the BST and subway, which were probably drawn up by farangs!
One problem is the tendancy to show dotted lines for proposed roads which may or may not have been finished. Could have been totally abandoned. Or moved a few K without planning permission.
But the main bugbear for me is finding North. In LOS it just doesn't seem to be a consideration to print a map which actually corresponds to the points of the compass.
Don't you just love the place?
