If so, when I come out in April will my phone just switch over to the local network ?
Thanks, Rig.
It's not so much to do with the phone itself, but the operator. Does O2 have a roaming deal with some Thai operators? If yes, then it'll work.

Check O2's website for international roaming.

I think you'd be better using the new Wifi in town.

I'm now looking at my next handset, this little beauty has caught my eye.

I had looked at that one, But..... for some reason I've never been a fan of Nokia and the Samsungs screen is just unbelievable, also it records in HD.

Both phones pricing will be ridiculous though. I think a few hundred quid on top of a £40 contract.

How did you manage to get your hands on the N97?

My mate works for Nokia.

Btw, if you go for Sam, make sure you read the reviews about the battery life in it, since it has a big screen, 8Mp camera and HD recording, those tend to eat a lot of the battery.

Will do!

I'm waiting for the review on GSM.
I think its going to cost a fortune though so I'll wait and see.

rig,
iPhone 3g is only legal in Thailand on contract with 'True Move', see if O2 has arrangement with them, as cowboy suggested. Unlocked one's are in Market Village now for 26k, presumably far cheaper in Bangkok.

BaaBaa,
I had the Omnia i800 and gave it away for peanuts. The clips I've seen of i900 (I know you're talking about i850) seem a lot better now but still have to use the arrow from the mouse which was impossible to use, the keyboard was too hard to use with fingers, so you ended up using the mouse or the little pen thing (stylus) that came with it, took ages to write a text. They wouldn't open the box and let me try it out, make sure you try it out first, even the experts on these videoclips are having to do some things twice, its was not heat touch-sensitive like an iPhone where you just have to lightly tap it, but you're having to physically push down on the screen. Still the i900 may be vastly improved on the i800.

Also there's not a stylus slot, so it attaches by a bit of string looks naff, they don't show you this in the demos:

Read this report: The Omnia is still a touch screen, but the fiddly menus do not work well with fingers, with even the “x” to close windows being difficult to press – it has been designed entirely with the stylus in mind. The stylus is attached to an accessory strap on the phone and is hardly easy access. However, Samsung has had the foresight to include an optical mouse pad below the touch screen. This is a tiny square that you rub your finger over to move the pointer around on the screen. This makes web browsing a little easier, but in practice it's actually rarely used..

Saying that the iPhone has plenty of short comings too and the Omnia has more programs etc, but just found it too fiddly and longwinded to use.

Its Omnia in name only, the original Omnia was windows mobile, this one is Symbian, no Stylus or mouse, its touch screen only.

It is capacitive touch like the iphone (a stylus or gloved finger wouldn't work)

I think the problems on the demos are because its a demo unit, I've seen newer videos where its much more responsive.

But that AMOLED screen.

I'm not talking about any of them. I'm talking about the Omnia HD (i8910) thats not even out yet.

Heres a more responsive UI (Still preproduction)

Definitely no optical mouse or stylus but does have HD viewing and recording. This will be about £700 worth of phone, no relation to the previous Omnias.

Yeah apologies mate, thought you were referring to an i850 and then saw a later model i900 and saw it was the same cack as the i800 I had (it's fatigue of waiting for a 'kin burglar to come back for the past 2 nights!!)

The i8910 does look like they've got it right, no stylus, no mouse spot thing. Should be worth waiting for, I like the iPhone but there's certain things it don't do that wind you up.

Cheers,

I'd like the iphone myself because the UI looks superb, that camera is just no good though.

What else is winding you up because the iphones still an option for me if this HD turns out to be stupidly expensive.

Negatives:
The camera, when looking at pics on the phone is better than a digital camera screen, maybe cos the iPhone screen is so good!? My avatar is a pic from iPhone emailed to laptop etc. But is doesn't have a zoom and still no flash. It has video now (30 seconds max, unless you subscribe) but still no zoom or light.
No MMS but think it has a downloadable program you can subscribbe to for small money, should be standard though.
Battery runs down quick ut must be cos of big bright screen.
3g has Microsoft facility but not tried it out yet.
Email no problems, can attach files, pics etc.

I only use it for what I use it for so fine for me apart from zoom and light/flash, but others who want to do other stuff moan about short comings. Maybe as Apple not an ideal office sync tool!? but my office is now my sofa.
Built in iPod is handy, cant fault internet, wifi or EDGE.

Doubt I'd change as UI is effortless, daft little things like if on internet looking at hotel or business, their email and tel number are highlighted, click on it and it goes into page where y ou can call or save to contacts. When texting, double tap space bar and it adds a full stop and space for next sentence, speed dials are icons of mates pics on front screen and its got a fart machine!!

in addition to the aforementioned issues, for me the biggest is using the touch screen for emails/text messages. It's tedious enough with regular phones or even with the ones that have qwerty keyboard.

This is why I have iPod Touch + Nokia E90 and with Joikuspot app in my E90, I can surf the web using 3G.

If I bought a mic for the Touch, I could use it to make VoIP calls too... but then again, I can do that with E90 already.

As far as the physical aspects go, I like the look of the Sony Ericsson Xperia in that it’s the first phone I’ve seen with a full qwerty keyboard that you could comfortably carry in the pocket of a pair of jeans.
The one I handled had no charge in the battery so I’ve no idea how it functions.
I would never buy a touch-screen phone, as they are just not good enough for writing e-mails or long text messages. I see many people everyday who use phones as a business tool and none of them are using touch-screens; in fact the preferred format is the blackberry type device of which the Nokia E71 seems a good choice.

Steve, I think that the iPhone is the only one at the moment that has a 'real touch-sensitive' screen, ie: heat sensitive and needs the lightst of taps, I find it much easier typing emails or texts on it that any other phone I've used with physical buttons.
It has a qwerty keyboard although only the letters, you touch a button and the numbers and apostrophies and stuff comes up. The new 3g now has copy/paste too.

I guess its what you get used to and comfortable with using.
