sat nav maps ?

Hi everyone,
Just searched without luck but I'm sure this must of been discussed before, but does anyone have info regarding maps for a tomtom sat nav ?
I'll be driving from Bangkok to Koa Sumie ( ? ) probably stopping in HH for a while !
Any info would be appreciated, thanks, Rig.

I cant help with satnavs but Google earth will do a routefinder from Suvarnabhumi airport to Surat Thani.

Our previous visit got us lost for ages around Bangkok when we were driving from Pattaya to HH so the wifes a bit anxious, but we did fine after that, it all adds to the adventure to me .

If you Google "tom tom maps thailand", there is some discussion on a couple of other forums.

i emailed tom tom some time back to see if they were working on a map for thailand and they kinda said no - i did get a response from some australian company that were working on maps for the tom tom for south east asia not sure whether they finished it or not
if u got nokia N95 the nokia maps has thailand on it - never used it though

i did the journey from sukhumvitt to HH without any problems just followed expressway around don muang and over the big bridge then it was a matter of going straight down to HH
I will throw in that her indoors wanted to go to the Big C in Phetburi (she cant resist them!) and we got hopelessly lost getting out of phetburi - my fault i turned right instead of left or vice versa

You can also download Google maps for your Nokia and iPhone. If you have a phone with GPS, you can use it to follow where you are, but it doesn't give you guidance. I'd imagine that you could get a GPS BT module pretty cheap there to use with a mobile phone, if you don't have GPS in it.

Although not the most up to date or accurate, Nokia maps has the benefit of guidance and you can buy the license for a limited time only, like a day, week or a month.

The trouble is that it uses quite a lot of 3G/GPRS data to update your journey, so that might turn out to be expensive.

I checked TomTom website and at least for my 540, there was no Asian maps available.

Cowboy, I use Nokia maps in Thailand and it doesn’t take very long to download. If you run it at your departure point and scroll along the journey it will download all the data within a few minutes and save it to the phone and then it won’t need to connect again. The data rates on Thai SIM cards are very cheap.
I believe there is also a program available that allows you to do this from a PC via a normal internet connection and transfer it to the phone, but I’ve never needed to do this.

Maybe I didn't express myself correctly. Yes you can download the maps beforehand and plan the journey. That's fine if you know the destination exactly.

However if you wanna run around town and navigate to different places, you almost need to leave the app online, so that it'll find everything. It's a bit crappy like that. It seems to always keep downloading some additional data, even if you have preloaded the maps. This eats battery a lot together with GPS.

It's far from perfect, but it's compact since it's in the phone and most of the time does the job.

Cowboy, I see what you mean, it does connect to do searches for things and as you say battery life can be a problem. I use a separate Bluetooth GPS receiver with a Nokia E51 which gives you an extra battery and improves the situation, but as you say, if you use it all day it will be a problem.

Yup, see I have e90, so the GPS is integrated, hence short battery life when using Nokia maps.

This is fantastic information, some a bit technical for me but I'm gonna get my 13 year old on it, like most teenagers bit of a wiz with all of this !
Please don't shout at me but we're thinking of just chilling out in HH for most of the trip now instead of wasting time driving... sorry !
