jogging in HH and the dog "problem"
Hi guys,
Can anyone give me some advice. I like to jog and run on the roads to keep fit. I'm moving to Hua Hin now. I tried to go jogging during a trip here in September and I didn't get too far before i encountered some agressive dogs. I stopped jogging and went past them only to encounter the same problem again a few minutes later.
It's pretty impossible to go for an enjoyable job in this situation. Does anyone know if there are any jogging routs in HH which are free of dogs?
Alternatively has anyone tried any dog "repellant" devices e.g special whistles or other devices advertised on the net.
cheers.

This is a problem everywhere in Thailand. You don't/shouldn't/can't really just go jogging down the roads, too dangerous for many reasons. Most people usually find a park or go to the areas provided inside an estate.
1. The dogs encountered on the road will turn the "jog" into a "sprint".
2. Cars, motorbikes, absent minded pedestrians etc etc all turn this into a stressful thing to do.
3. When doing exercise of this nature it is probably best to do somewhere with cleaner air than what can be found in the roads.
I tried what you were suggesting and it didn't really work and wasn't enjoyable, so just went to a park and found out that that's where most others go to do it.

The only time I jog is when I'm trying to catch the goat so I can kick its arse for destroying everything in the garden but I know what you mean about the dog problem. If you're going to be living in Hua-Hin then it seems the grounds inside the palace complex are quite popular. I don't think there is any charge at all but if I recall correctly, I think you may need to have your passport with you in order to be allowed in. I've never been in myself but it looks very nice from the outside and of course it's also dog free.

I jog 4 or 5 times a week – low tide on the beach and high tide on the city streets. Dogs are a minor problem. You just have to be aware of them and sometimes adjust your route. Like I used to go up Soi 41 but dogs became a problem so I switched to Soi 45. Also the East side of Phetkasem around the palace is okay but the West side is a real problem. The dogs between Soi 9 and Soi 11 at one time were iffy but they’ve aged and mostly sleep. The intersection of Soi 88 and Phetkasem had the worse dogs for me but since the little restaurant has been leveled the dogs are gone.

I second jogging on the beach around 5 pm onwards and I recommend to start near the army camp. Very enjoyable and not too many people around.

Klai Kang Won Palace is a beautiful place for a jog. 900 meter track around a spectacular lake. Peaceful and 100% dog free. Leave a passport or driving license with the security guards. Open mornings and evenings. Access on the north side of the palace.

While I'm not the Cheap Charlie of old being charged to go run with some guys seems a bit strange to me! :OIHF wrote:why not try joining the Hash House Harriers, has a cha am and hua hin. every saturday at 4pm.

Just get out first thing in the morning and hit the street man

I am a "Cheap Charlie" but find nothing strange in being asked to contribute a mere one hundred baht for beer, soft drinks and snacks. Indeed, an evening run with the Hua Hin or Cha-Am Hash House Harriers represents one of the best deals in town. On top of that you get to exercise in lovely (dog-free) surroundings well off the beaten track, and get to meet some rather nice people.

The beach is my No.1. No dogs, no dog-sh*t, no cars, no potholes, no high pavements to jump up and down.
out of interest, anyone know how long (exactly) the beach is from the steps at Khao Takiab to the steps at Sofitel. I run it 3 times a week. And if anyone else does it, whats your record. Running to stopwatch is much better fun than treadmills.
