Re: Will the hi-tech cashless future leave a dinosaur like me behind?

I was visiting my sister in the US last month. Before I left here I ordered a debit/ATM card from my US bank to be sent to her address. When I got there I quickly took a hundred bucks from an ATM so I'd have some cash to spend. Never spent a nickel (five cents) of it. Used my iPhone or Apple Watch t...

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents

given that it appears that none of the gas tanks exploded, one wonders what was so flammable inside the bus that caused such a large and rapidly spreading fire. The merc driver the bus side swiped and another behind said after they stopped, they cut off their engines because of the strong smell of ...

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents

This is getting a bit weird. One of the clips shown on TV news appears to show the bus, still moving, with flames in the vicinity of the left front tire (tyre). Another video showed what appeared to be a couple of forensic police officers examining what looked like a severely damaged right front tir...

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents

IMHO one of the things that needs to change is the practice of building buses on top of truck frames. The suspension is bad for passengers and buses end up carrying much less weight than the chassis was designed for. One of the companies that does this is Cherdchai which has a big bus factory in Kor...

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents

Several Thai news stations are referring to it as the "death bus" (บัสมรณะ).

That's interesting and pretty much corresponds with what I'd been told.

Oddly, the place where I hear "ow" most often is in line at the Amazon coffee shop that I frequent.

Fortunately, I'm such a regular customer that I don't have to say anything anymore.

Re: Letters 'kh' and 'ng' in Thai, asking for water, etc.

Thai linguists usually admit that the 'l' is from laziness. We have many examples in English too; language is fluid. :D I've often wondered whether or not it's a genuine shift or just a fad. Kind of like that annoying nasal (velum always open) fad that surfaced a while ago and which seems to have m...

Re: Letters 'kh' and 'ng' in Thai, asking for water, etc.

Ao vs. koh, I wonder if koh is one of those words that Thais can use with each other, but a farang is advised to be more polite? Would be good to know. It might be the other way around, with koh considered to be more polite. Incidentally, I think I will start using khrap and not khap, when I hear i...

Re: Letters 'kh' and 'ng' in Thai, asking for water, etc.

I may say in my broken and over-polite Thai 'khun khap, nam nam khap' (sir, bring me water please) As for your near homophone problem with nam (นำ) and nam (นำ้) you might try different wording. Perhaps: ขอน้ำเปล่าครับ - koh nam plao krap - Please give me some plain water. I’m not sure why, but it ...

Re: Letters 'kh' and 'ng' in Thai, asking for water, etc.

I've been trying since the mid 90s and it's all been one colossal failure; perhaps one of the biggest disappointments of my life. Shame on me. As for the "ng" sound. It is hard for those of us whose native language does not include an initial ng sound. When I was in Peace Corps training ov...

Re: Small (2-3cube) Drinks Fridge Without Freezer

We've purchased a lot of stuff at Big Kiang for our place in Cha Am. Unfortunately, we're in Korat now and won't get back to Cha Am until the end of October. We'd prefer a fridge without a freezer and with a maximum height of about 80cm as it will be placed under a window. I'll keep searching.

I had looked at HomePro and other sites earlier, but all the ones I checked have some sort of freezer.
