High-pressure water guns, ice, dirty water and celebrants drinking alcohol while on vehicles are all banned during the coming Songkran festival.

Pol Gen Chalermkiart Srivorakhan, deputy national police chief, said on Tuesday the bans came out of a meeting on safety measures to be enforced during the festival, and were intended to boost the confidence of people wanting to celebrate.

The use of high-pressure water guns, ice and dirty water would be prohibited, as would drinking alcohol while on a vehicle, firing gunshots into the sky and selling alcohol to people under 18 years old, said Pol Gen Chalermkiart, who chaired the teleconference with senior police and other officials nationwide.

Riding in the back of pickup trucks to throw water during Songkran will be allowed, Pol Gen Chalermkiart said.

He also sought the cooperation of young people in wearing appropriate clothing during the Songkran celebrations.

He said thousands of tourists were expected to participate in the Songkran revelry at popular venues in Bangkok such as Khao San, Silom and Asiatique.

In the provinces, Khao Niew Road in Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai of Songkhla were popular venues for Songkran celebrants

No Songkran on Khaosan Road this year
Published: 3/04/2019 at 06:52 PM
Online news:https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... -this-year

Business operators on Khaosan Road have decided to cancel activities for Songkran this year to allow authorities to prepare the area for the coronation of His Majesty the King.

The Khaosan Business Association announced in a statement dated Tuesday and released on Wednesday the decision to scrap all activities during the Songkran festival.

Shows, merit-making ceremonies and parades will be suspended this year to allow the government and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to improve and decorate the areas for the coronation of the King, association president Piyabutr Jiwaramonaikul said in the statement.

Khaosan Road, a popular hangout for backpackers, is part of Rattanakosin Island where all roads and buildings will be decorated for the coronation event taking place from May 4-6.

The street has gained worldwide attention for its exuberant Songkran shows and water fights for more than four decades. Songkran celebrations there were also cancelled in 2017 as the country was in the mourning period for the passing of King Bhumibol.

And it's not on the coronation route as far as I know. But if the 'authorities' are funding the decorating then that's a bonus for those that own buildings there.

The water fights will still go on. It's only the entertainment that has been stopped.
Songkran revellers will be allowed water play on Bangkok’s Khao San Road, but there will be no stage or entertainment organised, said Khao San business operators' association head Piyabut Jiramonaikul.

In the letter to announce the suspension of Songkran celebrations on the Khao San Road, the association said this year was auspicious for Thais as the three-day coronation ceremony will be held from May 4-6 for His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Rattanakosin in the Phra Nakhon District is a key area for coronation activities, the letter said. The area is undergoing cleaning and landscape improvements for the ceremony. The association, having hosted Songkran events for more than 40 years, decided to suspend its Songkran 2019 Festival to let the government prepare for the coronation.

People can still play with water during Songkran on the Khao San, the association said.

Meanwhile, Bang Rak District Office director Pakaporn Sanguansak said people can splash water at each other to celebrate Songkran on Silom Road from April 13 to 15 but there would be no organised party or vendors.

Foam parties banned during Songkran

Post by Geko »

Songkran foam parties have been banned this year in the interest of public safety, national police deputy commissioner Pol General Chalermkiat Srivorakan said on Friday.

Chalermkiat said there had been several deaths and injuries by electrocution at foam parties during previous Songkran festivals. He said that police have also been instructed to provide security at Songkran celebration venues and not to collect bribes from foreign migrant workers travelling back to home countries during Songkran. Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Pol Maj General Sukhun Phrommayon said that nearly 2,000 police officers and related officials will patrol 49 Songkran celebration venues across the city where 128,900 revellers were expected.
Some 60,000 revellers were expected to celebrate in Silom Road area, and 14,000 at the Royal City Avenue (RCA), 10,000 at the "S2O" event on Rama 9 Road, 5,000 at "The Street Ratchada" mall, 5,000 at Central World and 5,000 at Siam Square, he said. Sukhun also urged revellers not to wear "too revealing clothes" to help prevent sexual harassment and said people should pour water and put powder on others appropriately in keeping with good Songkran tradition. As for those travelling upcountry during Songkran, the city police would implement a home-watch scheme to ensure their houses were safe.

Well that knocks the annual party at MV on the head as well as the one in Bintablock.
not to wear "too revealing clothes" to help prevent sexual harassment
Unless you're ugly to quote one famous general. So it's not the fault of the perpetrators. You dress in revealing clothes then it's your own fault if you get raped!!!
