Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
I'm meant to be picking somebody up from Suvarnabhumi Airport in a few days time. Although I've done the trip many times, I've usually been asleep in the back of a taxi - I don't know the way .
I've got a Tom Tom with Thai Maps, but it doesn't recognise Suvarnabhumi. Does anybody know the Latitude/Longitude that I need to enter, or a few words that can be entered to get me close please?

13.69, 100.75 but the way is not very easy to find. I usually take the highway No.9 (after No. 35) direction Bang Na, there is far less traffic compared to going through Bangkok centre.

Re: Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
The Wikipedia co-ordinates are the actual aerodrome reference point, which is some where out in the middle of the runway area. Be prepared to dodge the odd 747.
From Hua Hin the best way is to get on to Hwy 9 at the big interchange at Phra Phadaeng. It is a toll road but goes direct and is sign posted all the way.

Pick-up truck, red plates.....watch for the lurking MIB, BB, at the various toll booths. Pete

Re: Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
Another thing I would suggest for this trip before I forget. Fill in the red plate log book before you leave explaining the trip, in Thai. You don't want to give the MIB excuses to extort yet more money in the event you get stopped. Pete

I've been to Suvernabhuma a couple of times with a car with red plates, you are usually ok if you go in daylight, and get out of the Bangkok area by dark

Thanks for your help guys - I'll give it a go. So long as I get close, I'm sure I can follow my nose for the precise bits.

Re: Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
One thing to watch out for with using sat navs are the many different ways to go to some place. I don`t know about Tom Tom, but with my Garmin it will very often try and direct me down some back street to save a couple of kms and / or minutes.
The software asks if you want the shortest, or the quickest route, and it is not always easy to choose when you are not familiar with the area.
With regard to getting to the airport you need to stay on the expressway, and be aware that it has several different names. I find that the hardest part with that bloody airport, is getting back out again to the correct expressway!
It is worthwhile down loading Google Earth, and then you can have a look at the alternative routes, and read off the co-ordinates.

Re: Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
I've already used the Tom Tom a fair bit in Thailand to get from town to town. The only funny it has come up with so far is continually trying to direct me onto Frontage Roads rather than leave me on the main highway. I realise what's happening now, and usually manage to ignore her.
For anybody moving here with an existing Tom Tom, the upgrade to Thai maps was relatively cheap, and it works really well.

Re: Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
Don't use GPS much any more.
Garmin is great for details but tends to lead you around quite a bit. Have Ovi maps on the Nokia but a lot of searches come up in Thai language, even though I've downloaded the English version of the Thailand map. Good backup, though, and the maps are free to download.
The easiest I've lived with was iGo8 on a clone; probably get another one with a bigger screen and the latest maps as they don't cost an arm and a leg.
But only when I have the need for one.

BB, I have a Garmin and it tells me to go to "Frontage Roads" which I do as didn't know the difference. What is a Frontage Road please?Big Boy wrote:I've already used the Tom Tom a fair bit in Thailand to get from town to town. Re: Sat Nav coordinates for Suvarnabhumi Airport
The Frontage Road is the road that takes you by the shop fronts. There's normally a little island separating the Frontage Road and the Main Highway. I guess (although this is Thailand, so it is only a guess) that you can stop on the Frontage Road, where as you shouldn't stop on the main highway.

Thanks for that. I should have realised but have only just worked out how to get to a petrol station from the highway !
