Buying a new laptop
Re: Buying a new laptop
RAM is cheap, I wouldn't go for anything less than 8GB, or else you'll open 5 Chrome tabs and it'll slow down (browsers eat memory)!
Edit: Very happy with the Lenovo I bought this time last year (specs and prices earlier in this thread, which I've merged now.)

Thanks! I remember you saying you're happy. Where did you buy it?
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

Online, Lenovo shop on Lazada. I think prices have gone up a fair bit over the past year though.

Re: Buying a new laptop
I’ve never been a laptop fan and until recently had never purchased one for myself. At my condo in Cha Am I’ve been using a 13 year old hand-me-down MacBook which I upgraded to 8GB RAM, a 256 GB SSD and a new battery. It does everything I need including LibreOffice, the free MS Office clone.
At home in Korat I had been using a 13 year old MacBook Air with only 2 GB RAM. A real slug compared to more modern machines.
I decided to replace the old MBA with a new M1 MacBook Air. I got the base model (8/256) for 27,000 baht. I was afraid I really needed more RAM and storage, but I was wrong. The M1 is probably the fastest and most capable machine I’ve ever used. (I bought my first Mac in 1984.) it’s so good that I rarely bother with my 2019 iMac anymore.
I’m now a laptop convert.

Re: Buying a new laptop
I think you’ve got the basis of the spec sorted out 8GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD hard drive, preferably with a 12th generation i5 processor.migrant wrote:Thanks all, good advice/ideas. The one that is retiring itself is a Dell 15". I've been satisfied with it.
Thanks again!
As for make, almost everyone will say I’ve had a “X” make and it’s been great and somebody else will say I had an “X” and it was rubbish!!
If possible pop into somewhere like Banana IT in Market Village and see if you can find something that fits the spec/budget and then look on Lazada or Shopee for a better deal.

Re: Buying a new laptop
I spoke too soon, the Lenovo is kaput.
The battery has dropped to zero and won't charge now. Ran some diagnostics and got in touch with the Lenovo service center who had a tech remote access the laptop to confirm the issue which they said was the mainboard. Luckily it was still in warranty so a week later they sent a tech to replace the mainboard and I was poised to praise the service.
However, the problem remains and now they're saying its the battery. More than a week later I've had no response from them and can't get a replacement battery. The official store on Lazada where I bought it replied with the usual "mai mee" telling me to go to the Lenovo website. The Lenovo Thailand website was even worse and just gave me links to a third-party service company with offices in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
I just want to order a damn battery which it turns out wasn't included in the warranty. It seems like this can't be done in Thailand but they're happy to sell you a Lenovo laptop and leave you with it when the hardware fails after less than two years.
I found the battery from a supplier in Singapore so have reached out to them to see if they can ship to Thailand.
Thinking of buying a Lenovo? Caveat emptor.

This could easily apply to other manufacturers - not sure whether buying from a store rather than Lazada would give you better support or not?
Re: Buying a new laptop
No, its the official Lenovo store, and I've been in touch with the official Lenovo Thailand company, they don't care where you buy it providing its still under warranty. Just frustrating that they don't have parts for a machine that's just 2 years old (either that or they're too lazy to bother replying or chasing up).

Why not buy a replacement battery on Lazada or Shopee that fits your machine?
I did with my HP and it's fine. Maybe doesn't last quite as long as the original but it's plenty good enough especially for 400 baht delivered

There isn't one for that model, I've looked. Besides, most of the stuff on there is fake and I want a genuine one since the machine is relatively new.
The Singapore firm has already replied and will ship ... so much easier doing business outside of "mai mee land".

Yeah I'm sure mines fake but it performs satisfactorily
Out of interest how much is the Singapore version? 1500 baht?
I might use your contact next time, I doubt mine will last more than a year/18 months

The annoyance is still with Lenovo Thailand just not being arsed to help me source a replacement.

Re: Buying a new laptop
To update this, found one which appears to be genuine from a shop on Laz called Battery Depot. Its 30% more than the Singapore one with the usual 'Thailand premium' but I went ahead and ordered anyway.
They actually answered my message and look like a reputable outlet so may be of use to others needing laptop batteries: https://www.lazada.co.th/shop/battery-depot/

Re: Buying a new laptop
I'm sure you're aware already but if you select 'Lazmall' on the left, everything that then comes up in a search is guaranteed to be genuine. Always makes me laugh as it just confirms everything else is probably fake!
Re: Buying a new laptop
Would it be recommended to buy a laptop here in Thailand or in Europe/UK ?
