I would imagine most the ones using this entry are people with family ties to Thailand that can not return any other way.

That makes sense, but of course, the generals will pat themselves on the back and call them "tourists".

Bullies can't take it. It was a female reporter that made him cause himself to lose face and he really won't be happy about that. I hope the foreign press was there.

News stories like this are going to encourage tourists into the Sandbox scheme, not:
A fully vaccinated tourist from UAE who came in on the PhuketSandbox has tested positive for COVID19. He was immediately transferred to a hospital for treatment. People in his group have been moved to an ALQ hotel where they will do 14-day quarantine at their own expense. Their SHA+ are obliged to give them a full refund Thailand

Samui Plus sealed route open for bookings
Inoculated tourists can start booking for the second reopening destination, Samui Plus, under sealed route programme as the registration for certificate of entry (COE) was opened on Monday.

Ratchaporn Poolsawadee, president of the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, said some minor rules still need to be finalised, such as the cost of a 7-day alternative state quarantine (ALQ) package that should cost 35,000 baht, including swab tests and medical fees.

While many provinces, like Phuket, impose more stringent measures for local travellers, he said Koh Samui will not ask vaccinated travellers to show negative Covid-19 results.

Doesn't matter what island it is, everything is closed and there is a lockdown/curfew in Thailand - its not exactly a tourist paradise.

I don't know if this has been addressed already but what's stopping these tourists (if anyone actually bothers) doing the mandatory 7 day ALQ then leaving the island to go to other provinces?

With the deaths and infection rate in Thailand steadily increasing, the few considering travelling to Thailand will no doubt review the wisdom - the UK currently has Thailand on its “Amber List” but that could easily move to Red at the next review due on Thursday

Very true, if you look at Turkey for example their rate of infections are less than Thailand but still on Red List and they have significant tourist connections with UK. Which points to evidence that UK could do likewise with Thailand.

Incidentally the growth rate in UK, Portugal, Spain in the last 2 weeks are all significantly higher than Thailand.

The difference being those countries have a majority vaccinated whereas Thailand is still woefully behind.

Tourists are not going to come here until that changes.

The whole thing has been one big botched publicity stunt for the generals and their lackeys. The majority of those that went to Phuket were business people, or those with interests there such as property or family, wanting to enter Thailand avoiding the strict and costly Bangkok quarantine procedures.

Those that turned tail and got back on the plane probably were the handful of tourists that turned up thinking they'd have a nice relaxing holiday. They actually found out that they still had to quarantine despite being fully vaccinated, the state was going to hound them, and everything aside from the hotel they were in was closed!

The entire Phuket thing has turned on its head as far as I can see. Instead of officials here being afraid of foreigners bringing in Covid, the tourists should be deadly afraid of catching this delta strain from the locals while they're here. They're isolating and quarantining the wrong group of people!

Xenophobia 101 - Thailand will always blame evil foreigners for all of its self-manifested ills.

Tyranny 101, Hitler blamed the Jews, Trump blamed the Mexicans, Idi Amin blamed Indians. Nothing new.
